All these players have the potential to be the best player in the world. Currently, the race is between ronaldo and messi. To be the best player in the world you have to compare the qualities between these two players that the best must have.
Sheer physical ability/athletisicm: No one can deny that roaldo is one hell of an athlete, vertical, speed, strength he's got everything to compete in the most physcially demanding league in the world. Messi, for his size, is also incredibly combative (remember him against Arjen Robben in champs league semi's a few years ago at the Bridge) Messi won that battle. However, Ferguson uses Ronaldo's physical attributes to his team's advantage (lone striker against arsenal in champs league semi final second leg, he provided the outlet). This is the reason why ronaldo can play many positions, because physically he is capable. Messi can only be utilized in that right wing, and perhaps the left wing also. Defensively Messi isn't effective, but when ronaldo defends (if he puts his mind to it) he is just as capable of defening an corner as he is scoring one.
Intelligence: This is why Messi is able to score the goals he does. He is able to use his environment and almost always his teammates to his advantage and to the team's. Ronaldo could be more effective if he was more of a team player, get others involved (which he has been slowly getting into courtesy Ferguson). His 42 goals last year included lots of tap ins, but that involves anticipation and other things that you cant teach. But his intelligence ends there, with himself. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember him having many assists. Messi is capable of scoring goals just as he is able to provide them via assists. Ronaldo has the potential to surpass Messi at this level, and i think he will do so.
Technical Ability: This is where things get interesting. This depends heavily on the two different clubs and two differnt leagues. La liga isn't the best defensive league in the world and this invites teams, not just players, but entire teams to technically dance their way to victory (Barca is not a bad example). Manchester however, they have to deal with the premiership clubs shutting down shop and physcially competing to get results. It is harder to compete against a team technically when they are physical rather technical themselves. Messi's style fits right into Barca's style of attacking play which has been ingrained in that club for decacdes. What I'm saying is that Messi is lucky to be in a team and in a league that invites and expects technical play from Barcelona. Ronaldo on the other hand has to deal with a flexible Manchester united team that can and sometimes have to adopt to defend, attack etc. This is why Ronaldo stands out so much from other premiership players. He is not afraid to show his technical ability even though his team is defending a slender lead away to a good physical team. However ronaldo could use his techncal ability more to his teams advantage (as mentioned earlier) where as Messi knows how to use his ability to perfection (not to say that he has more ability than ronaldo).
Entertainment: This is all perspective.
Goals: Everyone knows that Messi scores amazing goals and this is why. All Barcelona players are trainined to play one way, and Messi is the best at playing that certain style. He's bin plying that way since day 1, thats a good and bad thing. It's good because for Barcelona, he is perfect. If he were to play anywhere else in the world, it would be tough for him to fit in. He is the epitome of Barcelona football. So many of his goals come via teamplay who are all on the same page since day 1. In Man Utd. Ronaldo, sometimes has to grab his moment and score and other times his team play is incredible (counter attack v.s arsenal champs league semi's second leg). His goals may not be as beautiful as Messi's but he has a more variety of scoring-freekicks, headers etc. In this topic its all about QUALITY v.s QUANTITY. What is most important? As a proffesional footballing and hardcore fan perspective, quantity of goals is immense which Ronaldo exceeds Messi. However from other perspective, Messi exceeds ronaldo in quality of goals scored.
Contribution/Effectiveness: As I said eariler, Messi is Barcelona. Ronaldo can move on, and Manchester can find someone else, and continue to win. However if Barcelona lose Messi, they somehow lose an identity out on that far right side of the field. Ronaldo kind of has that same feel but Ferguson has managed Unitd in such a way that Ronaldo hasn't become the soul of manchester united compared to steven gerrard of liverpool, messi of barcelona and raul of madrid.
In conclusion I'd pick Ronaldo over Messi because of his physical and tactical flexbility, but to be honest I hate the guts of the guy but admit that he is the better footballer. BUT, to throw some light on Messi supporter..Let's see Ronaldo score a hatrick for ten man Barca v.s Madrid
