They say the waiting is the hardest part. It means one thing when you’re waiting for your dinner at a drive-through window, and something altogether different when you’re waiting for the most important phone call of your life. That was the waiting game Brian Dawkins played back in 1996 when he had to watch sixty players come off the board before he was selected by Philadelphia. As an “undersized” safety perhaps the league didn’t know what a force Brian would become in the pro game. But Brian knew. And while it may have taken a bit longer than he wanted for that phone call to arrive, Brian also knew that it was his opportunity to prove his greatness to the world. In the moment, sure, his emotions got the best of him. But that’s exactly the kind of passion that has made Brian Dawkins one of the best safeties to ever play the sport.
