6.0 Shreds the U.S. Open of Snowboarding

Snowboarding’s major competition season wrapped up this weekend with the one, the only U.S. Open Championships and, lest you be left wondering, Nike 6.0 was definitely out in full force.

Friday’s Superpipe Finals saw Nike’s own Louie Vito stomp a cab ten double, double crippler and a giant, last-hit 1260 for the silver-medal podium spot (actually, boos erupted from the crowd when they showed Vito’s score, as many swore he shoulda won it instead of taking second, but that’s the way the contest cookie crumbles sometimes). Ross Baker, Ben Watts and Matt Ladley shredded Finals alongside Vito, as did TTR crown-holder Peetu Piiroinen. Peetu even won the day’s Best Trick with a ginormous cab 1080 double cork, earning three grand for his troubles, and that’s on top of the 50Gs he took home for winning this year’s Burton Global Open series title. Man, what a great year Peetu’s been having.

But speaking of Superpipe Best Trick, 6.0’s Ellery Hollingsworth won the women’s division with a lofty Michalchuk off her first hit. She also nabbed third place in the final Superpipe standings, while her teammate Elena Hight touched down behind her in sixth. Congrats, ladies!

When it came to Saturday’s Slopestyle event, Mikkel Bang stole the show. Cab ten, switch back 1260, and frontside 1080 went his jump line—all executed with his signature super-chill, über-lofty style. He scored a whopping 98 out of 100, which is undoubtedly one of the highest scores any one’s ever clocked in U.S. Open history.
