James and Ryan Start Season on Top of Podium
11 January 2010
The 2010 Supercross season has officially started and you could not have scripted a better beginning to the campaign for the Nike 6.0 Moto team. James Stewart took home top honors at Anaheim 1 as he looks to defend his overall title and rookie Ryan Dungey proved he's the real deal with a sensational second-place finish. Both riders took to the dirt wearing the Nike AIRMX, which Ryan helped design and develop, and the boot wasted little time announcing its arrival on the moto scene, as it graced the feet of not one, but two podium riders.James trailed Ryan, who won the $1,500 SPIKE Holeshot Award, by over four seconds until lap 17 when he made a pass for the lead and eventual win. Ryan tried to answer back on the final lap of the race, but Stewart held him off for his seventh win at Angel Stadium and the 37th of his career.
“I stayed consistent throughout the race,” said James. “I started to push myself during the last 10 laps and that is what racing is all about. I wanted to be there at the end and I was.”
Dungey, who is the defending Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class champion, is competing in his first full AMA Supercross class season.
“It was amazing,” said Dungey. “I had a few bobbles, and I am here learning. There is always another race. No excuses, James rode a great race, and this was a fun debut for me.”
The Supercross season is shaping up to be a good one, and we can't wait to see these guys go head-to-head once again next weekend when the Monster Energy Supercross heads to Phoenix’s Chase Field for the second stop on the championship circuit.
