Coco Claims 'CT Win
29 October 2009
In the surfing world, when your name is Coco Ho you're essentially royalty, and today Coco took her rightful place on the throne. In powerful 2 - 3 foot surf at the Rip Curl Women's Pro Search in Portugal, Coco cemented her place as one of the top surfers in the world. The 18-year-old phenom was razor sharp all contest long, defeating former WCT champions Sofia Mulanovich (quarters) and Chelsea Hedges (finals) en route to her first World Tour victory, propelling the rookie up to third place overall on the Dream Tour.
“It feels so good to be on top,” Ho told the ASP. “I’m trying not to think about it too much. I love my trophy. When I started the year, I set a goal to make quarterfinals or better at every event in order to finish Top 5 by the end of the year, and I’m doing my best to accomplish that."
With a deep bag of tricks and competition smarts beyond her years, Coco looks set to establish herself as a podium fixture. In the meantime, the young Hawaiian just needs to work on her champagne game. It seems the hardest part of the contest was popping the cork after her win. But with the form she's in, she'll certainly get plenty of practice. In fact, her next chance will come next week at the Movistar Peru Classic, which is event number 5 of 7 on the World Tour.
A huge shaka goes out to Coco for the win and best of luck on the rest of the season.
