In Chicago I met up with Abby Wambach from the US women's soccer team. She was at the summit for the summer games and the team was fresh off their win at the qualifying tournament for Beijing.
The Qualifying tournament for the games was held in Mexico. The US defeated Canada and Costa Rica to earn the prized position. Abby said that they faced their fair share of obstacles at the tournament, but attributes their great team chemistry to their success.
I was excited to talk to Abby because I had just seen her and the rest of the team at their training camp in California. I watched their practice and Abby was such a leader on the team. She works very hard on the field and is the epitome of leading by example.
Abby was a member of the gold medal team in Athens, so I asked her what advice she gives the newer players about the games. She simply said, "They'll have to see for themselves." And they will get the chance when the games are held in August!
It was so fun chatting with Abby. She has been so involved with the ATHLETE campaign it is such a great role model for young girls. I hope she kicks butt in Beijing!
