Basketball Training Style with Tamika Catchings

The WNBA Finals are under way, and after Wednesday night's nail-biter, we are amped up for tonight's critical game 3. Watching all the WNBA action is getting us fired up to get in the game ourselves, so we asked 2011 MVP Tamika Catchings to show us some of her favorite items to sport when she trains. A stylish and sophisticated blend of fashion and function, Tamika’s polished gym outfit brings all the confidence and class she exemplifies on the court to her cross-training.

Tamika needs lightweight shorts when she’s running laps in preparation to rock the hardwoods, so it’s no wonder she selected the Nike New Hero Mesh Shorts. The breathable, mesh material is made to keep up with her fast-paced training.

On and off the court, Tamika’s style is cool and classic, which is why the minimalist, low-profile Nike Pro Compression Sports Bra is the perfect pick for Tamika, and one of Nike's most popular pieces.

The simplistic and sleek Nike G87 Knit Training Tank Top has an open racerback and a contoured shape that provide a full range of motion, making it an excellent choice for Tamika’s variety of cross-training activities.

No training outfit would be complete without a stylish pair of sneakers. Tamika loves the In-Season TR Training Shoe, as the cushioned insoles are super soft and offer superior support for your feet, which Tamika needs for jumping and pivoting.

We are in love with Tamika’s trendy training outfit. It’s clear to us that along with being an authority on fitness, this MVP also has a keen eye for fashion. We can’t wait to rock her look at the gym, then make a modest attempt at some of her signature moves out on the court!

What do you think of Tamika’s look? Let us know in the comments below.

Fight for a Cause: The Kay Yow Fund

When you ask a coach or an athlete what the definitive moment of their career has been, they’ll often respond with “winning a championship,” or cite a tough game that they won, or maybe even their highest score. Drive and competitive spirit can lead to greatness and many proud moments in our lives. We see sports teams in schools across the nation go head to head against one another in games every day, but what if they were all fighting together on the same team, for the same cause?

Realizing there’s no stronger force than a nation of united coaches and athletes, former North Carolina State University head basketball coach Kay Yow founded the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in 2007, a charitable organization of coaches committed to finding a cure for women’s cancers. Kay’s vision was to have the coaches focus on something greater than competition between themselves, and work collectively towards a common cause, fighting together to accomplish something bigger than anything they could do individually.

What started as a vision has been fully realized with the support of coaches and athletes from over 1500 schools. In less than four years, the fund has raised four million dollars for women’s cancer research and treatments. Each February, schools across the nation host the “Play for Kay Games,” where teams sport pink uniforms, t-shirts, shoes, socks, laces and game balls outfitted by Nike, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Kay Yow Fund.

Marsha Sharp, fellow coach and friend of Kay’s, has served as the executive director of the fund since Kay’s passing from breast cancer in 2009. Marsha was the Texas Tech University head women’s basketball coach from 1982 to 2006, where she led her team to a national championship in 1993. Along with multiple conference championships, Marsha also won National Coach of the Year two years in a row and was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003. She recently stopped by Nike Headquarters to visit one of the fund’s founding partners, and to reveal the upcoming apparel designs that will debut this fall.

I got a sneak peek at the new designs, and I can tell you firsthand, they are truly amazing! I was also fortunate enough to get to sit down with the basketball legend and ask her about the fund, her days as a championship coach, and why everything is bigger—and better—in Texas.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund has brought together coaches from across the nation to work collectively in the fight against women’s cancers. Besides Yow’s personal past as a coach, what do you think makes this fund uniquely important to coaches? Is there a correlation between the experience of coaching and a cause like this one?

I think so, and I think Kay viewed it that way. She always said she was fighting against one of her strongest adversaries when she fought against cancer—that it was similar to trying to win in athletics. The coaches had an amazing respect for Kay; she may have been the most beloved member of our profession. She was always concerned about everyone else, and had such a positive outlook. She wanted a nation of coaches united for this cause. Because of who she was, a passion grew to keep her legacy alive, and this fund is a way for coaches to gather their energy and get together to do something (of value).

As someone who has worked with female college athletes as well as directing the Cancer Fund, what steps would you recommend women take towards preventative care and maintaining a healthy lifestyle?

It’s the same things we hear all the time that some of us do better than others: diet and exercise. Certainly (genetics play a part), but I think you can overcome genetics by your lifestyle. I think this is where a nation of athletes and coaches can lead the charge because they have already worked to maintain their health through strengthening and conditioning in order to compete. If we take that same concept and realize we are competing against (disease) our whole lives, then it’s a great way to gather people to the cause. You have to look at it as trying to win the greatest competition you’ll ever compete in.

When did you realize you wanted to be a coach?

I didn’t until I was in college. I thought I was going to be a lawyer! I went to a school called Wayland Baptist and it was one of the only places in the country where women could go at that time and play basketball. They had a great team, they were called the Flying Queens and they were one of the best in the country. One time they had a 100-something winning game streak! I wasn’t good enough to make the Queens, but they let me coach the freshman team when I was a junior. I learned so much about basketball and just fell in love.

What’s the greatest piece of advice you ever received?

My dad, who I lost in 1999 to Alzheimer’s—another battle that needs to be fought—always said the neatest thing you could ever do is to always leave things better than how you found them. Relationships, people you meet walking through your daily world, projects you’re working on, your occupation—if you try to follow that concept every day you will do some good things in your life. I really cherish that advice.

What’s your proudest achievement?

Anyone who has ever coached a sport and loves the game can tell you that there’s nothing like winning the National Championship. That was the most amazing experience professionally I’ve ever had. But my personal belief is that (you should take advantage of) whatever you are able to do because of the platform you have. So because of the success in my career, (for me) to have the opportunity to be involved with the Kay Yow Fund is a proud achievement. That’s what I’ll look back on and say how fortunate I was to be able to have been a part of.

What are some of the things the Kay Yow Cancer Fund does to raise money?

The biggest fundraisers we have are the basketball games in February. Recently we’ve been reaching out and having more grassroots participation in high schools, some Jr. high and in other sports. College men’s teams have also started to participate. We had over 1500 schools participate last year—the goal is the get to 5000. Also, partnering with Nike has given us such credibility and clout, for us to be associated them has been a big thing. People can’t wait to see the next t-shirt and shoes-- the athletes are so fired up for the new designs. They are so proud to wear the Kay Yow apparel. So we also raise money through the t-shirt and shoes and uniform sales.

What your favorite thing about the Lone Star state?

I love (Texas). I love the hardworking, farm type people in west Texas. The big, open terrain. And you can’t argue with the steaks and the barbeque!

How can the Nike Women community blog help out with the cause?

Visit KayYow.com for more information, including volunteer opportunities. They can (also) see stories of events people have created, and create their own event. There’s info provided on the site on how to do that. They can also support the pink games at their local school.

Keep an eye on the blog as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages for information on how to get Kay Yow-related product coming soon.
A Great Coach Makes the Difference

There are certain coaches who change our lives. I know my crew coach made a huge impact in my life and I thank her for helping me achieve so many goals during my athletic career. She even challenged me to excel in academics, which showed me that she truly cared about me as a student-athlete.

When I was told that I would be interviewing Coach Geno Auriemma, I was floored. Coming from a university with a history of basketball legends, I was excited to meet the coach behind this record-breaking team.

Coach Geno is exactly what I expected, if not more. He’s a charismatic man with a talent for making those around him grow. He had a sense of respectability about him. His presence is not demanding, but commanding.

I felt so inspired by Coach Geno that I think I need to call my coach and thank her for all the positive things she did. If you, too, have a coach who you believe pushed you past your comfort zone and helped you obtain the goals you set for yourself, then perhaps it’s time you give him or her a call.
The Quiet Leader

When you were younger and imagined being in a band, did you imagine yourself being the singer? What about soccer; if you played on a soccer team, were you or did you want to play the forward position?

Generally, we associate leadership with being upfront. Most think of the singers as the bandleaders. In basketball, the strongest sounding title is “Power Forward”. And often these assumptions are true. The type of personality that doesn’t shy away from attention often makes for a strong leader.

But I believe there are other ways to lead as well. When I was young, I wanted to be a drummer. In a typical stage set up, the drummer is tucked away in the back, which is hardly where you would think of a leader being. But the drummer IS a leader, for they control the beat, the tempo of the song. The rest of the musicians play off of that beat. I always wanted to work in film, but not as an actor; instead as a screenwriter or director. They might not be in front of the camera, but they lead behind the scenes. The writer creates the foundation that the rest of the crew builds off of.

Take the example of the Point Guard in basketball. If they weren’t setting up the perfect assist to ensure the ball gets into the right hands, then those tall, flashy superstars in the Center and Forward positions would not be getting those high-profile buckets.

So when you think of leaders, remember the answer isn’t always what seems obvious. You don’t have to be loud to lead, just lead with your actions; set the example. If you, like me, have been labeled an introvert, know that you can still lead quietly.

WBF: That's A Wrap!

How curious are you to know how I wrapped up my experience of the World Basketball Festival? Let me just tell you this weekend was jam packed with great street ball, witty MCs, entertaining activities, surprising appearances from some of our favorite athletes, and comedic interviews.

Aside from watching great street ball, I was also able to mosey around and check out the other activities that were going on at Rucker. You could definitely NOT get bored! For the young men who were feeling fabulous, there was a barber shop where they could get the latest haircuts...I was even offered a 'mohawk haircut' but I wasn't feeling as daring you can say.

After snagging a few interviews at this hot spot, I made my way to a green screen where I was able to replicate my man Kevin Durant's signature move. While I'm not as coordinated as I use to be, technology and Nike made me look like a pro on my poster that was made after they filmed me.

If that's not enough, I spoke to some of the MCs, that were full of wit, energy and passion! They brought so much life to the game that I was impressed by their talent and the impact that they have made on the players and the community.

And to put the icing on the cake, the one and only Mr. Kobe Bryant made an appearance in the morning for a children's clinic that he was part of. It was great to see him after his back-to-back championship wins and of course interact with so many children that admire him.

My weekend in New York City was incredible! I did so much in such little time.
From creating my own signature move, to learning what makes Rucker a hot spot, I was able to not only enjoy the festival but see all the positive effects that the World Basketball Festival had on the community.Basketball, like any other sport, brings people together and that is a sight to be seen. It is evident the magic that one can experience at Rucker.
WBF DAY 2: THE BATTLE OF THE BOROUGHS!

When it comes down to the "Battle of the Boroughs" who do you rep? Well, if you ask me I was repping all five boroughs.

For those of you who don't know what the Battle of the Boroughs is, it's pretty simple. It's cross-town high school basketball rivalry at its finest. While the second day of the World Basketball Festival began to unravel the crowds became more animated with each game that led to the championship.

Fans, MC's, and even coaches were cheering on their local teams. You can definitely say there was a lot of New York pride, as everyone at the event was very supportive of the raw talent and all out basketball performances. This is where legends are made.

I got to hang out with one of the coaches and asked him how a player gets street credibility on the courts and what he, as a coach, does to make his players tough. After an engaging conversation I made my way around the Festival where I ate some mouth watering Harlem soul food: mac n' cheese, fried chicken and candied yams. Once I was done enjoying my delicious food I continued to watch some edge of my seat bball.

Oops, and of course how could I forget to mention the highlight of my day!?! Our beloved Kobe made it out to Rucker to teach a basketball clinic. It was great to see him after his championship win this year. I was amazed! That was definitely the frosting on the cake!

So, make sure you keep it locked here, for more on the first ever World Basketball Festival!

The Story Behind A Staple: The Air Force 1

Have you heard the history behind the Air Force 1? Are you an Air Force 1 aficionado? Well I didn't know the story of this legendary shoe until I pulled up to the Apollo theater for the screening of the documentary, "The Anatomy of an Urban Legend."

After so much fun earlier that day it was great to stand alongside the red carpet and interview stars such as Rudy Gay,Danny Granger,Douglas Ellin, Grand Master Caz, and Datwon Thomas just to name a few.

Once everyone made their way inside, I too got the opportunity to go in and watch the movie. I was instantly distracted by this beautiful display of white Air Force 1's hanging from the wall.

The film was incredible. To think that one shoe, one brand, has changed the way we all see culture is fascinating. There's a lot of great content and information that will leave you in awe. Without giving away too much information, make sure you watch this documentary as soon as it comes out!

Cheers,
WBF Day 1: Repping Harlem!

Rucker, the park where legends are made, was everything I thought it would be if not more. People of all ages filled the stands as they got ready to cheer on the different teams that made their showcase at this event.

I made my way through the park and participated in the various activities that Nike had set up. My favorite of course was the "signature move" spot, where I got to assimilate Kevin Durant's sig move and I got a poster with the progression of my move that I did on the big screen!

After checking out the games and park I was able to kick it with my new homie Terrence J, the host of BET’s 106 and Park. We chatted about Harlem and how the World Basketball Festival has been so inspiring to the youth and the community. Not to mention, that he taught me a Harlem "handshake."

There's a lot of rocking stuff at the WBF event so make sure you stay tuned on Facebook and on my Twitter @Nike_NFR for more updates on my weekend in the Big Apple.
Steve Nash Sets the Bar

Mental toughness is something I’ve always prided myself on. Back when I played baseball, I distinctly remember the throbbing pain in my right hand that tried to distract me during my game. I played through it. I broke my finger in the first inning of the game when I attempted to field a ground ball to first. CRACK. There goes my finger. My whole hand swelled up and by the second inning my coach suggested I go home. “I’m good coach.” I said it didn’t really hurt. I was obviously lying, but I knew I could play through the pain.

I set the bar for my team. Suck it up and play was my mantra. Toughness is something that I find so admirable as an athlete, and as a person for that matter. Nike athlete, Steve Nash epitomizes what it means to tough it out. Playing through an injury is one of the toughest things to do. Recently, after an elbow to the eye and six stitches later, Nash continued to play. Not in the next game or in the following series. With one eye open and the other swollen shut, Steve Nash lead his team to win a major playoff game.

As a two-time MVP, Steve Nash has thrived in the league for over 10 years and it amazes me how Nash has continued to push the edge. I had to play through a broken finger and I can't explain how painful that was for me. Then again, I had much more to prove than seven time all-star Steve Nash. Nash could have easily made the decision not to play given the circumstances, but he sucked it up, and that’s what makes him so inspirational!

There’s something about Nash that makes you excited to watch him play. Maybe it’s because you can catch him skateboarding through the streets of New York City in the off-season, or because we all know how awesome he is at soccer. Steve Nash continues to set the bar for all of us. No matter how great you are, you can always be better and push harder.
The Future of Future Sole

There’s a national search going on at Nike, and it starts April 15th, 2010! It’s the launch of the 2010 Future Sole Contest! This competition may be your big chance to prove to Top Nike Designers that you’ve got what it takes to be the next big shoe designer! It’s unreal I know, but this contest can bring aspiring young shoe designers one step closer to pursuing their dream. It starts with an application and can finish with a career in shoe design.

Austin Jermacans, the 2009 Jordan design winner, is now living a dream. When Austin submitted his application for the 2009 Future Sole contest, he thought his chances of winning were unlikely. However, his unique design and twist to Carmelo Anthony’s Melo M6 had Nike judges impressed enough to declare the high school senior the winner of the Future Sole Jordan Design contest. Austin’s life is now forever changed.

As the Jordan Design Contest finalist and winner, Austin won a roundtrip ticket to visit the NIKE World Headquarters. As a finalist, Austin had exclusive access to one of Jordan’s elite designers, Justin Taylor. Justin acted as a mentor to Austin during the contest, and will continue doing so throughout his next four years of college. Austin also won a $500 dollar autographed Nike gift card signed by Carmelo Anthony and $5,000 in computer equipment to help launch his career as a shoe designer.

To top it off (like this wasn’t enough) Austin was recently flown from his hometown in Pennsylvania to Denver to watch Carmelo Anthony play! The big surprise, Austin had no idea he would actually get to meet the All-Star basketball player before game time. Hours before, at Carmelo’s barbershop in downtown Denver, Austin was surprised as he walked into the barbershop to see Carmelo Anthony himself holding Austin’s shoe… his version of the Melo M6! He not only had time to talk to Melo about his design, but was also told that his version of the Melo M6 would hit the shelves in May!
I Train To Train Better

Despite the madness of my job, I always feel prepared. I don’t always think I am, but as I spoke to rookie basketball player, Renee Montgomery, I began to realize I approach interviews similarly to the way an athlete approaches a game.

Years, months, and even weeks before games, Renee mentally and physically prepares. She watches tapes and physically trains her body with a mix of weights and cardio. She tweaks her game by getting her mistakes out during practice. I asked her how she played basketball with all the pressure to win, being she played on the undefeated Connecticut girl’s basketball team. When it comes to game time, Renee’s approach is simple, “I just play at that point.” So it would make sense that playing was the easiest part of her college basketball career.

Like Renee, I work hard before my games… I mean interviews. My interviews, what you may think to be the most difficult part of my job, are actually the easiest! Practice for me is researching my athletes and watching old “tapes” and interviews. I always tweak my delivery and questions the night before the big day.

Physically, I prepare by going for a long run. I clear my head for what’s to come. It’s totally a process for me. I also like to make sure I am ready for any training I may take part in. For my interview with Renee, I was physically training a bit more than usual. I prepared to take part in a training session with not only Renee, but veteran trainer Jackie Ansley.

Being I’m not a professional athlete or trainer, I always feel like I need to train before I train. Funny, when I asked Renee what she does in the off-season, she explained that she works out five days a week to prepare for pre-season training.

After finishing her rookie season, Renee tells me she’s so use to her hectic college schedule; she doesn’t know what to do with all her free time now that she plays professionally. Even as a part-time ESPN analyst, she feels the need to figure out where to spend her free time...so she hits the gym. No lie, it was a little intimidating working out with a professional athlete, but Renee did everything she could to cheer me on, as if I was one of her teammates.

One thing that trainer Jackie made apparent to me, the outcome isn’t the major part of the story, it’s the sweat and hard work that got you there.

“A New Way to Communicate”

In sports, communication is key. In the heat of competition, plays are being shouted out and every teammate needs to know what's happening. When you're wide open, and your teammate has the ball, you shout at her to pass it your way. But what happens when that communication is blocked? What happens when you yell, but your teammate can't hear you? When your teammate is hard of hearing or deaf, you find new ways to communicate.

Shannon Bean and Tara Holaday are college basketball players at the D3 level. Shannon is hard of hearing and Tara is deaf, though the majority of their teammates are hearing.

At every practice and game, interpreters are present to stand next to their coach on the sidelines. A quick glance at the interpreter gets them up to speed on what's being said when reading lips isn't enough.

The team has put all of their plays into sign and although learning to sign fluently can be a long and difficult process, Shannon and Tara's teammates have put in the effort to learn so they can communicate efficiently on the court.

Says Shannon, "I definitely depend on my teammates. They're a big part of my success on the team."

In the heat of competition, Tara says she has plenty of opportunity to see the signs for the next play.

"If I don't catch it from the point, the other girls are flashing it too. Coach is standing there and she's flashing it, so all of us together are communicating with each other."

Coach Amy Reed says that she sometimes forgets that having deaf or hard of hearing players isn't always commonplace.

"Sometimes the referees will come up to me and say 'How many deaf athletes do you have on your team?' and I wonder why they're asking that question because they're just like every other player out there and they pick up the game very easily."

That is not to say the communication barrier hasn't come without its challenges for Tara & Shannon, as well as their teammates.

Tara explains that during games, "there's people talking all around me behind me, my head has got to be on a swivel all the time. You know, I'm using my eyes and so there's limits to that."

"It's really hard to be hard of hearing, you miss a lot and sometimes people get frustrated with me for missing so much, but you just really have to rise above it and you just have to take one thing at a time." Shannon says. "I try not to think of myself as hard of hearing, but as a normal person. I'm not perfect, I'm not normal, but I'm a human being."

UCONN DO IT!

Only 11 more games to go! Only eleven more games until the Connecticut women’s college basketball team makes history with the most consecutive wins. Eleven is a relatively low number, when you compare it to a number like 78. However, to think each game is 40 minutes long and anything can happen in a game, you start to cringe to think that although these women are so close to winning, they are also so close to a loss. This thought however, is not something the Connecticut women even consider, which is why they are still the reigning champions of women’s college basketball.

In a packed arena, there were sudden loud bursts from the crowd. A reoccurring chant from the cheerleaders to the crowd sang, “You, see, Oh, En En, UCONN!” Grandparents, parents, siblings and fans like me came to see a piece of history and cheer on the top two women’s college basketball teams in the most important game of the year.

Stanford, who played an almost perfect season, lost only one game and it was against undefeated Connecticut. The Connecticut women have made headlines and broke records. How these women play so well in such a pressure situation is beyond me. As I watched the championship game, I couldn’t help but think this game is not looking good for Connecticut. The clock read 8:30 in the first half with a score: Connecticut 5- Stanford 12.

Nothing was going in the basket the first 12 minutes of the game. The clock read 7:46 and Connecticut was still down by seven. That didn’t stop the crowd. Everyone stood up. The UCONN fans were over powering. A three-pointer was made and the crowd stood up. Military members as well as the United States Vice President came to watch the game.

By the end of the half, Stanford was holding a significant lead. I’m not sure what the Connecticut coach told his players, but it seemed to work. The crowd seemed to step it up as well. It seemed like every time the ball came to the UConn side of the court, the crowd would get up. Not long into the second half of the game, UConn took the lead!

After being down the entire first half of the game, UConn came back and not only took the lead but held on to it winning the women’s college championship game defeating Stanford 53-47.

In a close battle to the finish, Connecticut took home the trophy with another win in their seamless record. Now if they can only keep it going for their first ten games of next season! UCONN DO IT ladies!

2010 Champions: University of Connecticut

They were not free from fault.

In fact, the final box score almost reads like a loss.

On Tuesday night, Connecticut missed more than twice as many shots as they made. The free ones, too. They were out-rebounded. They committed more turnovers than assists. Halftime even brought an 8-point deficit.

All this from a team that had trailed for all of 8 seconds on their way to the championship game.

But there's another part of the definition of perfection. It involves words like "exemplify," "supreme" and "excellence."

Hardwood translation: the only stat that matters is having one point more than your opponent.

So they scrapped. They smothered. And they roared back.

History won't remember this as the first game during the Connecticut’s 78-game winning streak that it failed to win by at least 10 points. Rather, it will mark the Huskies as only the second team in all of college basketball lore - Men's or Women's - to post back-to-back undefeated seasons.

And feats like that don't need dictionaries.
