If Anya Marina weren’t such a talented artist, I have a feeling she’d make a great Nike Field Reporter.
Not only is a Anya a writer, articulate and super personable over the phone, she tipped your girl off on gyrotonics, an exercise method developed by a Russian ballet dancer, Juliu Horvath. I gave some of these exercises a whirl, and I’ll testify for them. Gryrotonic training, along with yoga, acupuncture and being a self-proclaimed health nut are all part of Anya’s lifestyle. Oh, and she loves Nike. Snaps for her.
Anya accredits her musical interest to the songs her Russian mother would sing, as well as a strong influence from her father, who is a composer. Songwriting may have been in this women’s blood.
If you have been keeping up with the pop vampire culture as of late, you would have heard Anya’s featured single off of the New Moon soundtrack – “Satellite Heart”. This song is a perfect depiction of Anya’s often-delicate lyrics. There is an almost sultry quality to her voice – not scratchy or throaty but definitely textured. She has a witty way of phrasing her words that make her lyrics both heartfelt and funny although they are non-autobiographical.
“That’s just part of who I am,” Anya said on putting the clever into her lyrics, “I don’t like novelty songs – they annoy me – but if the humor is smart, that’s a good thing.”
Everything about Anya is interesting. She gets her lyrics everywhere from walking brain sessions to soul-assessing proclamations by her acupuncturist. While performing, Anya will don what she has labeled as her “uniform;” a military jacket and other almost ambiguous pieces.
“I love being a lady,” Anya admittedly says but she tends to downplay any flouting of her “girliness” while performing or arranging lyrics. This surprised me. Something about Anya is innately feminine.
Anya’s latest album, Slow and Steady Seduction Phase II, is just that: a clear and hypnotic unleashing of Anya’s pipes. You’d do well to check it out. If you’re a NFR, you’d do well to take some notes – this girl’s got it all.
