Believability is what international photographer, Warwick Saint, believes to be the most important part of his work.
“It’s got to be believable and it’s got to be beautiful,” he says.
And maybe that’s why Saint was the photographer of choice for Nike’s “Rock Victorious” global campaign.
Over the course of two months, Saint traveled to four different countries to capture the essence of what it means to be victorious. Each image representing the athlete’s attitude and personality that express their competitive, gracious, honest and graceful natures. The four women athletes selected: Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Susanna Kallur and Lianne Sanderson. At the last of the four shoots, I met up with Serena Williams and Saint on set, to experience feeling victorious for myself.
Although a lot of the photographer’s work is based on pure talent, Saint did a good amount of research in order to prepare for this shoot.
“I tried to see what each athlete did naturally, that way I have proof when one of one of them says, ‘I can’t do that.’ They can see for themselves, ‘Oh I do that’.”
Ultimately by celebrating and capturing the emotional power of an athlete’s accomplishments, Nike Women hopes to inspire young female athletes feel, experience, become part of their own victorious moments.
As an athletic man himself, Saint said it was easier for him to understand how an athlete moves. Unlike models, working with athletes can be a unique experience being that posing for pictures is not their initial job. With music blasting and a funny sense of humor, Saint tries to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. Although it can often be more difficult working with athletes, it can also be much more rewarding.
Believability can be a hard thing to master, considering the real victorious moments are filled with adrenaline and thousands of screaming fans. Yet, somehow, the talented Saint is able to recapture those moments even if he has to represent the thousands of screaming fans with his own voice.
Although Saint jokes that the key to being a good photographer is to rock a shaved head, I’ve come to realize, that in order to be one, you need to live it. For him, life is always in a frame. His top-notch photographs have planted his work on numerous magazine covers and advertisements, and today you can feel victorious too when you experience the “Rock Victorious” Campaign.
