By hearing the name Coconut Records most might think it’s a band consisting of several members…I know I did. Well, Coconut Records is Jason Schwartzman. Yes, the same Jason you’re thinking of who acted in movies such as I Heart Huckabees and Rushmore.
Before making it to Tinsel Town though, Schwartzman was the drummer and songwriter for alternative rock band Phantom Planet. In the middle of their third album however, Schwartzman decided to take a different road in life and took a chance as an actor.
Now, along with pursuing his acting career, Schwartzman has formed the one-man-band, Coconut Records. Influenced by the 60s, Beach Boys, the Beatles, and modern West Coast indie popsters like Weezer, Schwartzman plays nearly every instrument on both of his self-written and recorded albums.
His 2007 debut album, Nighttiming had musical contributions from members of Incubus, as well as guest appearances by actresses Zooey Deschanel and Kirsten Dunst.
Schwartzman didn’t give up there though, in January 2009 Coconut Records’ sophomore release, Davy, was released. This album like the last also featured American actress, musician and singer-songwriter Zooey Deschanel. Boy, don’t they have something in common. They both act and sing, now that’s talent!
From “The Summer” to “I Am Young,” the music of Coconut Records will not get old. If anything, this is a perfect example of pursuing all your goals and satisfying all you’re favorite hobbies. Schwartzman didn’t just stop at acting and he didn’t decide to just form his own band, but instead decided to succeed and find joy in both!
