I’m not a doctor, nor am I personal trainer or physical therapist. I am however an athlete, who has spent plenty of time in ice baths post practice and on heating-pads before.
What I have come to learn during my many hours of agony; there is one key issue that can help any athlete, especially females, prevent injury. And that is core strength.
So what is your core anyways? Your core is comprised of abs, back, pelvic floor and hip muscles.
Why is a strong core important? Besides sporting a sexy six-pack, a strong core will improve your balance and posture, protect your internal organs and add an extra oomph to arm and leg movements. Beach season will find you jumping higher and hitting harder, in a buff, bikini bod.
How do you strengthen your core? Crunches alone won’t cut it. Anything that involves the movement of limbs while stabilizing (keeping the core still) is a must. Pilates and a Bosu ball are great tools for toning. Next time you do bicep curls, try balancing on a Bosu and notice your core engage.
An injury free season is just a couple minutes a day, away. What are you waiting for? Address your core issues today.
