Memo: Gone Running

Winter. The days are short, the sidewalks are snowed in and all you want to do (if you're like me) is stay inside with Thai takeout and catch up on your favorite movies. It's easy for the bitter cold to leave the motivation for your daily workout at the curb. Solution? Instead of waking up early or staying up late - try fitting your sweat-routine within your day.

In 2007, NIKE women had an ad campaign surrounding a plastic clock saying, "Gone Running...will return at" and the user could physically adjust the hands on the clock. I believe it was meant for women to use at work to advise to their co-workers that they were out and would return at the specified time. Genius.

We all have jobs, school, activities, deadlines and chores. I'm sure if you're reading this blog, you're a woman with countless demands - but still thrives on keeping her body and mind physically and emotionally stable. I consistently see women (myself included) who get caught taking care of everything and everyone but herself. Yet, I'm sure there's a woman busier than you and me…who is running, climbing, walking or moving right now.

Thus, grab those shoes and take 30-minutes to "get away" from the demands. If you're in school, bring your gym bag to class and hit the rec. center in-between classes. If you're working, bundle-up and take a brisk thirty-minute walk outside. Other ideas I've tested this month:

*Walking up and down the stairs in my office for 10 minutes
*Abs and push-ups during the commercial breaks of my favorite hour TV show
*Bringing my gym clothes to work and hitting the gym before I go home
*On-Demand exercise classes on TV

Summer is almost here ladies! Our outside runs, beach volleyball, bike rides and swims are eagerly waiting for our arrival, but until then, it's OKAY to take time for yourself, adjust your schedule and get your heart racing for even 10-30 minutes mid-day.

NIKE clock, "That's right. I'm out of here...The world will not fall apart in my absence...I'm coming back with a state of mind three coffees, two flirtatious e-mails, and a week of vacation can't buy."

Great post! I love the "Gone running" clock I got as an insert in a running magazine when the clocks came out a few years ago. Now I'm training for a half-marathon through Team In Training to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Can I get any more of these fabulous paper/plastic clocks to use for fundraisers? thanks!
