We’re not saying that you should skip your workout, but taking your training outdoors at least every once in a while can have significant benefits. Here are 5 reasons to get off the hamster wheel and get out there.
1. Burn more calories
You might be surprised how effective training on uneven surfaces and in variable conditions is at upping your calorie burn and strengthening your muscles. The average girl will burn 650 kcal/hr on a treadmill. Choose running stairs instead and you’ve upped that to around 800 kcal/hr. Winner: outside training.
2. Get fit for free
Common outdoor objects can easily be used to create amazing circuit and bodyweight routines, providing an excellent full-body workout, all without spending a penny for the gym. Plus, by taking charge of your own fitness, you will get more confidence and will be able to learn what works for you and change your routines accordingly.
3. Work out smarter – not longer
Train outside and you are constantly keeping your body guessing. Changing conditions, using the environment to create off-the-cuff workouts, variable surfaces – they all add up to give you maximum results in minimal time. And no more excuses that you don’t have enough time. After all, you can just walk out your door and go. So why waste time driving to the gym or waiting in line for the next treadmill when you have the world’s largest gym just outside your door?
4. Take your vitamins
Sunshine boosts your vitamin D levels, and vitamin D helps ward off depression and osteoporosis. Plus, the fresh air and ever-changing landscape help to keep you refreshed and invigorated.
5. Get in touch with nature
Regular exercise is a huge stress-buster and outdoor workouts are ideal for melting away tension. Whether you’re racing squirrels in the park or listening to birds singing in the city, training outside can help you reconnect with the world around you and notice the little things you normally overlook. It’s the perfect way to centre yourself and get ready to meet the day.
