Dion Phaneuf. One of the toughest defencemen currently playing in the league,
tests out one of the toughest pair of training shoes ever developed: The Nike Trainer 1. The newest incarnation of the legendary trainer is the Nike Trainer 1 MMX Olympic Hockey Edition. Dion agreed to put these trainers through their paces and then report back with his opinion of them. So what’s the verdict?

Well, Dion has a reputation for his keen style sense, so before Dion even slipped them on, he judged their aesthetic appeal first. “I really liked the look and style of the shoe, not only for in the gym, but wearing casually. I think it’s a great-looking shoe.”

The Nike Trainer 1 MMX boasts design graphics that pay homage to the Canadian Hockey Olympic Gold Medal win in Salt Lake City. One of its cooler details is the loonie graphic under the translucent sole, symbolizing the “Lucky Loonie” placed under the ice in Salt Lake City. Phaneuf remembers watching those games as Team Canada won Gold. “The Salt Lake Olympics were definitely a big deal for Canadian hockey. To have that lucky loonie in the sole of the shoe, I think that’s a great thing.”

Okay, so Dion raves about how stylish they are, but how did they perform under Dion’s advanced training regimen? “To be honest with you, I wear different shoes for different things. I’ll wear a lifting shoe for lifting and a different shoe for running with different support, but with the Trainer 1, you get the best of both worlds. It’s got great versatility, you can do just about anything in it.”

And by anything, he means anything. Dion wasn’t easy on the Trainer 1 MMX.
He trained off the ice like the Dion we all know and respect on the ice. Aggressive. Driven. Competitive. “I lifted in them, ran in them, rode the bike in my post-game routine, and did different workouts with them. They have a lot of ankle support and they’re very comfortable and light. You don’t want to be wearing a heavy shoe while you’re training.”

So the verdict is in: The Trainer 1 MMX is as tough and versatile as Dion.
Dion sums it up: “You can do a lot in that shoe, it’s been great so far – I can’t say enough good things about it.”
