THE TEAM CANADA JERSEY: A CULTURAL TAPESTRY. A NATIONAL PASSION.
14 August 2009
The biggest moment in Canadian hockey demands an iconic jersey. A design that reflects what hockey means here, as Team Canada goes for its first gold on its own soil.
Team Canada’s 2010 Olympic jersey was re-designed by Vancouver based artist Debbie Sparrow and Nike designer Stuart Iwasaki. The Maple Leaf crest, being the central element of the jersey, was re-imagined as a tribute to Canada’s rich history.
The intricate design is “woven from the fabric of the nation” and incorporates imagery from across Canada including iconic First Nations symbols. It depicts the diverse make-up of Canada today and our shared hockey history into one complete cultural tapestry.
The classic maple leaf is entwined with a tally of Canadian gold medals in Olympic hockey competition, represented in maple leafs – seven for the Men, two for the Women, and one for the Sledge team.
The central motif pays homage to the most powerful of all spirits: The Thunderbird. You will also find the national symbols of the moose, and the beaver, along with killer whale iconography representing strength and bravery — something the Canadian hockey team has no shortage of.
And of course, the heralded hockey player and stick, a symbol of Canada’s legendary hockey past and bright future.
The Team Canada jersey is more than an article of clothing, it’s a reminder that, in Canada, hockey is sacred, it’s a privilege, it’s our passion. You just don’t wear the jersey. You earn it.
It’s a historic opportunity to be a part of the biggest moment in Canadian hockey history – when hockey comes home.
