What exactly is luck? Some say it came in the form of the “Lucky Loonie” secretly embedded in the ice at the 2002 Winter Games. After all Team Canada did finally end its 50 year wait for hockey gold.

Calgary hockey star Jarome Iginla scored twice in that historic game and agrees ‘luck’ can be a factor. But when Iginla speaks of ‘luck,’ he’s talking about the kind of luck that happens when preparation meets opportunity.

“It was incredible to be part of gold in 2002,” said Iginla. “The ‘Lucky Loonie’ is the first thing everyone remembers. But what they didn’t see is that we made our own luck in Salt Lake by training our butts off.”

And just in time for Team Canada’s Orientation Camp, which kicks off August 24 in Calgary, Nike has released the MMX Collection with limited edition versions of the Nike Trainer 1, Nike Free SPARQ 09 and Nike Zoom Swift TR designed with inspiration from Canada’s hockey heritage and the Lucky Loonie from 2002.

“I think Nike has really captured the importance of the 2010 tournament to Canadians. Hockey is in our DNA and the loon symbol reminds me that our DNA includes our biggest wins on the biggest stages — like Salt Lake.”

The new Free SPARQ 09 MMX uses Free technology in a low-to-ground shoe designed specifically for dynamic training. Iginla has been wearing the Nike Free training shoes for a long time, and says that for him, they’re ideal for hops, grass sprints and ladder drill training. He especially likes the low profile and responsiveness, “ I can definitely feel my foot more.”

While the shoes are designed to inspire, the training that will follow with their use is what Iginla is ultimately counting on. “I definitely believe in this message of Force Fate, the training style and working towards goals,” he said. “We have the ability to follow our dreams. I don’t believe everything is just set out and already determined for us.”

When Iginla hits the ice to earn his place on the 2010 team, you can be sure he’ll be trained and fully prepared to seize the opportunity. After all for Iginla, that’s what real luck is all about.
