Alex Morgan - The Perfect Strike

The biggest stage. The final game. Where one strike can make you a star. For Alex Morgan, life will never be the same after her perfect strike.

A sixty-yard through ball from Megan Rapinoe bounces once, twice, three times as Morgan chases it down. With one touch, she settles it, pushing further away from the stretched defender huffing and puffing just to stay close to Morgan's blazing diagonal run.

"I took my first touch with the inside of my right foot away from the defender," Morgan says. "That first touch is very important. If it's good, you're set up for a strike with your second touch, which is all the time I had."

The balls goes from wild bounces to soft roll and trickles over the 18-yard line. One touch and Morgan is immediately on top of the ball, her right foot turned and planted, ready to strike. Her T90 studs hold on to the grass in Germany as fans around the world hold their collective breath.

The defender is closing. The window shutting. A quick glance up. And then Alex unleashes a barreling left foot strike. Knee over the ball. Toe down. Head down. Textbook technique. On pitch perfection. Morgan knows where the ball will end up. Laces make impact. The ball flies off her boot. It dips around the outstretched hand of the goalkeeper. Low and driven. There was no chance. Never a doubt. Far post. Side Netting. Alex Morgan. The Perfect Strike.

"I studied the goalkeeper," she says. "I knew she was tall. So when I saw her leaning toward the near post, the perfect place to put my strike was going to be low and hard at the far post. It was all in a moment. I knew it had to be perfect."
