When Teko Modise takes the field on June 11th for the home team in his homeland of South Africa, the mind of the midfielder will be singularly focused on breaking down Mexico's back line. In doing so, he'll be wearing his (NIKE)RED laces.

With a global platform and the attention of billions, this summer Modise's laces will be a silent symbol that brings the battle against the HIV/AIDS epidemic to the forefront along with soccer.

Johannesburg Laces Up

Johannesburg's Life Center cuts a powerful silhouette on the city's skyline. And now it sends a powerful message: Lace Up Save Lives.

HIV/AIDS is one of South Africa's most serious health problems. When the globe's collective gaze falls upon the nation this June, there will be a great opportunity to use football as a platform to educate on HIV/AIDS. Beginning last year, Nike partnered with (RED) to help ensure that happens.

In Johannesburg alone, over 2 million people a day see the sky-scraper draped with Didier Drobga's image calling them into action: Lace Up Save Lives. Since the launch of the (NIKE)RED initiative last December, hundreds of South Africans have been tested for HIV through partner organizations, and many more have experienced awareness training.

Changing Lives Through Football Competition

Lace Up Save Lives has shown the power of football to fight HIV/AIDS, and the lineup of Gamechangers has shown the power of football to affect social change on a range of issues from homelessness to health to education.

We know there are many more organizations out there changing lives through football, and we want to bring them onto the team.

To help find these gamechanging organizations we've partnered with Ashoka's Changemakers on the "Changing Lives Through Football" Competition.

Between now and June 11th any organization using football to enact social change can submit its idea for the chance at a share of the $90,000 in prizes. Finalists will be selected by a panel of expert judges based on innovation, social impact and sustainability. From these finalists the grand prize winner will be chosen by open voting.

Leagues Go (NIKE)RED

They send their champions into continental competitions against each other, but rarely do the biggest leagues of Europe get together for a common goal.

This weekend, the leagues of England, Spain, and Italy will introduce the special edition (NIKE) RED T90 Ascente ball in all home fixtures in a unified show of support for the Lace Up Saves Lives partnership designed to raise funds and awareness for the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa.

The (NIKE) RED ball is a specially designed T90 Ascente - the same ball currently used by all three leagues. But for one weekend it becomes more than a tool for victory. Spiraling RED around the field, the ball becomes a symbol bigger than any game, team, or league.

The global battle to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS is greater than any trophy and will require all of us to play on the same team.

Grassroots Give Hope

What you do off the pitch can have as much impact as what you do on it.

As part of the Grassroot Soccer initiative, the commitment of coaches like Mooki, Precious, Kwinji and Bethembe are making a difference on the pitch and in life.

HIV/AIDS claimed 1.5 million lives in Africa in 2007, and it’s through the tireless work of the gamechanging organisations involved with enacting social change through football that the Grassroot Soccer campaign can spread its message.

Affected by HIV/AIDS in their own lives, the Grassroot Soccer coaches draw on personal experiences to help educate children about the virus and teach valuable life skills.

It’s just like Mooki says: “If they play and we teach them, the message gets home.

USMNT Laces Up

In Tampa Bay last night the USMNT pulled off an injury time goal to secure a 2-1 victory over El Salvador in what is one of the last chances for coach Bradley to take a look at his player pool in preparation for South Africa.

With the spotlight firmly on the African nation thanks to soccer, it's more important than ever to harness the power sport can provide.

With that in mind, the USMNT showed their support for the Lace Up Save Lives campaign designed to use the power of soccer to raise awareness on the fight against AIDS In Africa.

The stadium side boards were dressed in RED, and the players tied on (NIKE)RED laces and (NIKE)RED track jackets.

But if in just 8 seconds you're down 0-1, the task complicates further, for everyone except Wilmer Aguirre.

The Peruvian striker not only supported the Lace Up Save Lives campaign, wearing NIKE(RED) laces in his Mercurials, he also made the difference in a historic victory for the 'intimos'.

Fast and lethal, Aguirre did what he wanted with the defenders. His three superb goals owned the night, and thousands in Lima, Peru, are still celebrating.

There are thousands of ways to wear the laces and even more things to do with them, but there's only one way to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa, and that is why the laces exist.

Crossing both borders and sports, a group of some of the finest athletes in the world have come together to raise awareness about Africa's AIDS pandemic.

Only education holds a longterm answer for halting the spread of AIDS, and by wearing NIKE(RED) laces on their feet (or hands, heads, arms, waist…) Didier Drogba, Andrei Arshavin, Clint Dempsey, Denilson, Marco Materazzi, Javier Mascherano, Fabio Cannavaro, along with Maria Sharapova and Kobe Bryant want to encourage fans globally to "Lace Up Save Lives."
