Bruno Cesar has entered into Corinthians history. And in the best way possible, with a great goal.

Black-and-white top scorer in the Brazilian championship with 11 goals, the mid-fielder scored the Timao's 100th goal of the season, in the year Corinthians celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Midfield Magic

Posted by DonJulio Sep 27, 2010

It was classic Michael Bradley.

From inside his own half he touched the ball to the winger and took off.

Slipping into the penalty area undefended, he slotted the in-coming pass into the far-side of the net, confidently collecting his 2nd goal of the German season.

Will we see this classic box to box midfielder for the USMNT against Poland on Oct 9th?

It couldn’t have been better for the Brazilians. The men's and women’s teams each won the highest podium place in the Homeless World Cup last Sunday, for the first time.

Known in Brazil as the Social Football World Championship, this is the first time the competition takes place here, and with decisive victories in the finals. The men’s team steamrolled Chile with a 6 to 0 victory, while the women's team beat Mexico 7 to 3.

These results stirred the fans watching at the arenas on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), and thrilled the 64 delegations participating in the charitable tournament. There were shouts of encouragement in several languages, much applause, and tears from the losers.

Leonardo Araújo Pacífico drew attention playing for Brazil in the final game against Chile and was an effective linchpin for the attack. With the 11 jersey, he protected the ball and left his teammates face to face with the rival goalie. In addition, he also scored three times.

“I like to play this way. It’s like the center in futsal. Today was my best game, and I'm very happy with the title. My idol is Ronaldo, the phenomenon. He taught us to have a dream and never give up”.

“I met the Africans here, and they are also examples of people who give it their all. I have to thank God and I dedicate this victory to Pupo”, celebrated the resident of Rio de Janeiro's Pavão neighborhood.

Coach Pupo Frenandes believes that now, beyond the happiness of achieving the best result in the history of the charity world championship, the victorious athletes may also gain more opportunities to improve their lives.

“Many doors may open," stated the coach, who has been leading the green and yellow team since 2004. "The boys played very well and yes, they may achieve, for example, a sports scholarship. Football is only a means for them to achieve success in life.”

Showdown in London

Clint Dempsey and the undefeated Whites welcome Tim Howard and his Toffees to London on Saturday.

Dempsey will look to continue his recent goal-scoring form, while Howard could be the lone Blue hope to keep Clint at bay.

Will Clint get his name on the score sheet in consecutive weeks, or can Howard pick up the first clean sheet of his campaign?

10 years of Nike Footballs in the Premier League: 9,995 goals.

We're just five goals away from the 10,000th strike: which player do you think will score the landmark goal?

Will it be Chamakh for the free-scoring Arsenal or will a goal hungry Manchester United take the accolade?

Can Essien cap his recent scoring run in style or will Torres strike to revive his side's fortunes?

Difficult Choices for Scouts

Posted by DonJulio Sep 23, 2010

The level of commitment, passion and hunger shown by players at the
country trials is making the scouts‘ and coaches‘ decisions extremely
difficult. With every stage of the country trials demanding players find
a new level of performance, the expectation becomes even bigger. These
are a few of the players who’ve handled it.

Jose David Castro, Colombia:
A silky central midfielder, Jose’s style of play gives him all the time
and space on the ball he needs. Crucially, he also knows how to use it.

Keron McArthur, South Africa: At the Chance trials, South Africa, the
scouts thought that Keron’s strength and pace helped him stand out. He
has another opportunity to excel in the final country trials.

Petr Pokrovskij, Czech Republic:
Petr has aspirations to play for Arsenal, and if his trials performance
was an indication of his potential, the cultured defender is giving
himself every chance.

Jaleel Johnson, South Africa: A commanding young goalkeeper, Jaleel’s
strong communication, strength under high balls and quick distribution
kept his side safe at the back and on the front foot.

Will these players make it to the final 100? Find out on November 15th.

The 8th Homeless World Cup kicked off this past Sunday in Rio de Janeiro with delegations and fans from the 64 countries involved in the event.

The US team was one of the first to perform and they entered the court wearing the Brazilian jersey over their US uniforms. The men's team from Kenya also drew attention with their war calls and by beating Ghana 12 to 3 over Ghana.

The Mexican fans were the noisiest, with horns, wooden "maritacas" and their famous Luche Libre wrestler costumes.

Everyone who took part appeared happy.

Someone truly happy with the tournament was Colombian Ingrid Macana, whose eyes sparkled when she spoke of her experience. "It's the first time I swim in the ocean. We arrived here on the 17th and we are making the most of it."

The Colombian player said that besides her, most of the players from her country had never been on an airplane, or seen the ocean up close. Ingrid used the word "super" often when recalling the start of the trip.

Besides providing unique experiences to disadvantaged youths, the Homeless World Cup offers hope for a better life to many people. Six months after the last edition of the event, a survey showed that 71% of the participants changed their lives considerably; 29% found work, 32% went back to school and 71% now play football regularly.

Since 2003 the charity tournament has contributed to a better quality of life for over 30 thousand people around the world and has counted with the support of over 70 social organizations.

The celebrations with the fans and the delegations from the 64 countries will continue until the 26th, the end of the tournament in which everyone wins medals and, most importantly, hope for a better life through sports. "Football gives me courage to do things I didn't think were possible," concluded the Ugandan Player Susan Lakica.

The Call of Wembley

Posted by DonJulio Sep 15, 2010

On May 20, 1992, FC Barcelona entered the history books of football. A chapter that set a milestone for a club that, from this day, would never be the same again.

18 years later, 19 men are once again being called upon to repeat, for the fourth time, one of the biggest feats in football: to be Champions of Europe.

FC Barcelona has begun its journey to the final with its first convincing victory of the season against the Greek champions. The hunger for victory is evident in every attacking play and every ball recovered. The rivals may be stronger and the season longer, but Barça’s desire to do more than just win is unparalleled.

The first hurdle has been cleared.

The first step towards the call of Wembley.

Never Look Back.

After last night's goal rush, the European stage is set and it's one for the attacking players to exploit.

Pato , Ronaldinho, Robinho and Ibrahimovic will look to continue the trend at the San Siro; Essien and Malouda can add to their goalscoring starts to the season; and Ronaldo has the chance to open his account.

At the Emirates, Arsenal can take inspiration from their destructive performance at the weekend; the Gunners will look to the attacking threat of Arshavin and Chamakh.

Will we see another night of goals? Which players will have an impact tonight?

FC Barcelona makes its debut in the highest European competition against the Greek champions. In front of their fans, Iniesta, Piqué and the rest of the team will leap into the field with the objective of shouting out to the whole continent who they are and what they play for.

This year, once again, the road to the final will be hard and unpredictable for Barça, but this is exactly where Guardiola’s team can shine, showing their best game and trademark way of playing. All of their rivals will do their utmost to beat them and Barça will do its utmost to win the title.

The assault on Europe is about to start. The swords are drawn.

Seize Your Chance

Posted by DonJulio Sep 13, 2010

You never know who's watching.

With these words, Arsene Wenger issued a nationwide challenge for the UK's best players to prove their game. And yesterday, the Arsenal manager proved his own statement by personally attending The Chance UK trials.

Arsene watched the last 32 players battle it out for a shot at representing the UK in the global finals. Then came the moment of truth. The coaching staff pondered. The players sweated. Then, Arsene congratulated Titi Accam, Peter Wedgeworth, Toby Ajala and Tobi Amokeodo.

Well done lads. See you at the global finals.

They've been through a lot to get this far. They never gave up on their dream of playing football and will now have The Opportunity to show all their skills in England.

From now on they will have to practice even harder to get high marks abroad and compete for the spots to train at the Nike Academy, an exceptional doorway into European football.

In January we will fly them to London, where the international stage of the selection will take place, with over 90 athletes from around the world.

Check out below a quick profile of the winners (in order, from left to right on the photo above):

. Felipe Franco, 17 years old, 1.72m, 63 kg, center field. Skillful, a technical player.
"I am very happy and proud. Like Jucilei (Corinthians' midfielder) said (during the meeting with the contestants), once we get to England we'll have to kill a lion a day"

. Iuri Gorentzvai, 20 years old, 1.86m, 78 kg, forward. European style player, with great physical strength. Good scorer.
"Ever since the Nike Cup I've been practicing a lot. I'm very happy to have been chosen and to see that the hard work paid off"

. Wesley Oliveira, 18 years old, forward. A gutsy player, quick and a high scorer.
"It's a great feeling, especially since I was among the last ones to be called to the selection process"

. Yuri Messias, 18 years old, 1.64m, 67 kg, center field. Good fitness and excellent technique in different positions on the field.
"My dream was always to make it to Europe, coincidentally, to England. I'll give it my best and see if I can manage to stay there"

. Diego Amaral Gonçalves, 18 years old, 1.71m, 65 kg, midfielder. Good fitness and technique, marks well and never gets tired.
"It's a great feeling, being chosen is a dream come true. I am eager to travel and see another country, a different culture"

. Mauro de Oliveira Navarro, 19 years old, 1.76m, 79 kg, midfielder. A strong and quick player, with good technique and marking skills.
"I'm going back there (he's had experience in English football), maybe to stay, this time. I'm very happy"

The summer is over. Playoffs are creeping closer. Can Beckerman lead the march to a repeat for Salt Lake?

There were approximately 2,000 registrations, players were evaluated in various tests and during the Nike Cup. Scouts worked tirelessly to narrow the group down to 44 players. In the end, only 6 were chosen.

All these numbers and stages only hint at how fierce the competition was in the Brazilian stage of The Chance, our international selection process that will choose players to spend a season training at the Nike Academy.

This last Sunday, the process reached its apex in Brazil, with the announcement of the selected athletes. After spending all of Saturday on activities and tests, the players returned to the field on Sunday.

With the players again forming four teams, each team played two 35 minute games, this time on a full-sized field (on Saturday they had played on a reduced field).

Besides the criteria by which they had been assessed earlier (control, precision, speed and in-game intelligence), on the full sized field they could show the scouts another basic selection aspect: physical strength.

Board meeting
At the end of the games, the technical team met and the observers presented their lists of selected players, highlighting the decision criteria for each.

There was some consensus in the meeting, but also plenty of discussion and voting arguments until the list was finalized.

From the conference room they returned to the field, for their final meeting with the players and to announce those selected, in an emotional ceremony mixed with happiness and relief from the winners.

Trust is Fundamental

To earn the respect of your team mates and rejuvenate supporters' faith, you need total conviction in your own ability.

Abou Diaby demonstrated the desire and dynamism demanded of an international player and is proving that if you're committed enough to keep learning, you don't need an armband to inspire.

Does Diaby have the qualities to become captain?

The First Step

With South Africa a distant memory, Europe turns its focus on the long road to 2012.

Miroslav Klose and Mirko Vucinic proved the match-winning difference for their sides, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy made it a goalscoring return to international duty. Fernando Torres continued his return to full form and fitness with two goals but Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s devastating hat-trick was the highlight.

And with strong starts for Serbia and Turkey as well, every team will want to repeat the feat tonight.
