Inside The Pro with Pato

Posted by DonJulio Jun 16, 2010

For a team of youth players in South Africa, it was a day they will never forget.

At the Nike Football Training Centre in Soweto, Brazilian star Pato shared insights in the Players Lounge on training, mental and physical preparation, and what it takes to not only constantly get better, but be the best.

That was supposed to be it. But then he surprised the kids by stepping onto the pitch with the team and showing them exactly what he was talking about.

They did it before. Can they do it again?

The oldest rivalry in our nation's history returns to international soccer after a 60-year break.

For over 200 years it's always been something between USA and England---land, tea, taxes, pop culture.

That past again molds the present on sport's biggest stage.

Last time they called it a miracle. What will they say if it happens again?

In the heart of Soweto, the Insider spent the day at the launch of the Nike Football Training Center.

Giving young footballers access to high-end training facilities, football education and top-level coaching, the center gives aspiring players the chance to train and feel like a pro.

Alexandre Pato arrived for an afternoon’s training with the kids, and they were quick to put him through his paces and some Nike Soccer drills.

But it’s not just about soccer; it’s about education on and off the pitch.

Through the (RED) partnership, essential life skills and HIV awareness are taught to enable every young athlete to reach their full potential.

Leave a legacy.

It doesn't matter if it's sooner or later: having an opportunity in soccer, making the best of it and maintaining a good game requires great effort and determination. Nilmar, now 25, started early and faced obstacles that almost brought his career to an early end. But he never gave up...

At 15 he decided to leave his home town of Bandeirantes (Parana state) to live alone in Porto Alegre, in southern Brazil, where he started his career in the youth leagues of one of the great Brazilian teams.

At 22, the forward had already played in Europe and returned to Brazil to play for Corinthians. In Timao he earned titles and was a high scorer worshiped by the fans. But he also lived through a drama, suffering two serious injuries that threatened to kill his career.

He wasn't discouraged. As a good forward, he went after a new opportunity, and when one presented itself in the team that discovered him, he seized it. Today Nilmar is at the top of his game, playing in Spain, and is ready to seize an opportunity to shine for the whole world.

Nilmar didn't waste any opportunities. Go after yours, starting on June 10th.

He left his high school and everything that was comfortable to follow a dream.

After years of hard work, climbing through the youth ranks and into the starting line-up for one of Mexico's strongest clubs, that dream is real for Jose Francisco Torres, USMNT midfielder.

Opportunity knocks. You have to take The Chance.

It's Never Too Late

Posted by DonJulio Jun 3, 2010

Most players don't have the opportunity to go for academy trials; some don't have the benefit of playing for a team from an early age.

But it didn't stop Didier Drogba aspiring to greatness.

From the make-shift car park pitches of his hometown, Abidjan, to the Parisian streets, soccer was a daily ritual for Didier.

Eventually, at 15, he got the chance to take his love for the game to the next level.

The intensity of training at his local youth team demanded he stepped up; he responded with two prolific seasons and the scouts soon came knocking.

Injury threatened to stall his late-blossoming career but Didier's professionalism, desire and determination saw him overcome.

At 19, an age where most players are trying to make their first team mark, Didier signed his first apprenticeship.

Two years later, he went pro.

This summer, he takes on the world.

Didier's chance didn't come early. Yours arrives on June 10.

American soccer players were a rare breed in Europe twenty years ago. A decade later, it seemed American goal keepers got the only respect. But with player after player pushing the boundaries, the opportunities multiplied, and today Americans can be found in some of the continent's best leagues, contributing to the game's most historic clubs.

How did they rise up? How do they succeed? Can you be next?

Inside The Pro presents the stories of six USMNT athletes rising up to Write The Future with the world's elite.

Tim Howard went from the New Jersey suburbs to goal keeper of the year at Manchester United and now protects the net for the Blues of Liverpool. Not just getting respect, he's captained his side, set shutout records, and is considered one of the best goal keepers in the world.

Watch the video, get Inside The Pro with Tim Howard, and learn what it takes to compete at the top.
