Preparing The Elite: Milan

Posted by DonJulio May 28, 2010

For his last stop, the Nike insider hit both sides of Milan to deliver the Elite Series.

The players couldn't wait to get their hands on the new boot and see how their recommendations had been used in the design.

Dejan loved the colourway, Rino thought the boot was a beauty and Sulley simply asked: "Where do you guys get your ideas from?" before adding "it's really cool, great job".

After a day in Barcelona dropping the boots off with Rafa, Yaya and Dani, the insider made the trip to Madrid to make sure Cristiano had his pair to dominate in South Africa.

The insider was keen to discuss with the players how their role in the elite series design had worked towards the boot they were holding.

Rafa was looking forward to trying the boot out, Dani Alves was a fan of the new colourway and Yaya had just two words: "c'est magnifique".

The initial stop on the Nike Insider’s Elite Series world tour, Rooney, Evra, Essien, Walcott and Drogba were among the first athletes to get their hands on the Elite Series.

Player reactions:

Rooney likes the idea of taking weight out of the boot.

Evra likes the Carbon Fiber and the weight difference.

Drogba thinks the total orange will match his national team kit perfectly.

Essien on the boot’s look: "For me, it's perfect."

Your Team

Posted by DonJulio May 14, 2010

You're 8. You make the assist. You know exactly where your teammate is. The fans run down from the stands. You celebrate the goal like it was the most important of your life.

You're 12. You control the ball in the midfield. You set up an epic attack of more than 15 touches. It's a textbook counterattack. You know how to do it. You know the movements of the players at your side. Together, you close in on victory. You leave the field feeling that this was a job well done.

You're 16. You fight for your team like it was your first day. You're not playing just to win, you're playing for the feeling. The whole team defends with all their might and attacks almost instinctively. The style of play that has been forged through the years now flows in everyone's blood.

You're 20. You make the same assist you made when you were 8. You celebrate the goal like it was the most important of your life. But this time you're playing in Camp Nou. You still have the same enthusiasm you had when you were 8. You play with the same team spirit you had when you were 12. You fight for your team the same way you did when you were 16.

Now, after years learning how victories are forged, the moment to make history has arrived. When the team you play for is truly your team, you never ease off, you know that everything is still there for the taking.

Write the future.

History Was Not Lost

Posted by DonJulio May 13, 2010

One game. One player. And now the door is open. Just stepping on the field meant something.

Last night Clint Dempsey became the first American to play in a European cup final.

"I know if I am the first American," Dempsey told the UK's Daily Mail. "I won’t be the last."

Athletico Madrid took the inaugural European trophy from a late winner in the 116th minute, but Dempsey finished another strong year in Europe and now brings that confidence back home and into national team camp on May 17th when the team begins building toward South Africa where more chances to write the future beckon.

Brazil Names Roster

Posted by DonJulio May 11, 2010

It was almost four years of preparation and dozens of player tryouts. Winning two titles and having the best campaign in the elimination phase guaranteed Brazil's position as the only country on the planet to play in every world championship.

This entire journey converged today in Rio de Janeiro, where Brazil announced the names of the 23 athletes who will comprise the group going to South Africa. Later today the list of seven reserve players will be announced. These will be called to play if one of the players in the first group is injured.

Being on the list of selected players is the greatest accolade for any player born in the country of football. It is a unique moment even for those with more experience. Luís Fabiano, Robinho, Nilmar and Maicon still want to break new ground. See what these four players had to say about the emotion of once again representing Brazil:

Congratulations to all selected! And good luck to the team and technical staff in the campaign for the sixth championship title! We are with you!

Didier's Day

Posted by DonJulio May 10, 2010

On a day when title glory beckoned, Didier Drogba demonstrated why he's the Premier League's deadliest striker with a display of speed, strength and precision.

His destructive second half hat-trick marked his 27th, 28th and 29th goals of the season while Ashley and Joe Cole combined at the death to put the gloss on a title-winning display.

Will Didier be as prolific in South Africa? Is Ashley back to his best in time for the summer?

Under the guidance of Corinthians’ back room staff, ‘O Brasileirao’ marks the transition from futsal street spirit to the blood, sweat and tears of the professional athlete.

A positive attitude and mental fortitude are required to conquer the intensity of the coaches’ speed and fitness drills.

The dream is to pull on the shirt of one of Brazil’s greatest clubs.

Johannesburg Laces Up

Posted by DonJulio May 4, 2010

Johannesburg's Life Center cuts a powerful silhouette on the city's skyline. And now it sends a powerful message: Lace Up Save Lives.

HIV/AIDS is one of South Africa's most serious health problems. When the globe's collective gaze falls upon the nation this June, there will be a great opportunity to use football as a platform to educate on HIV/AIDS. Beginning last year, Nike partnered with (RED) to help ensure that happens.

In Johannesburg alone, over 2 million people a day see the sky-scraper draped with Didier Drobga's image calling them into action: Lace Up Save Lives. Since the launch of the (NIKE)RED initiative last December, hundreds of South Africans have been tested for HIV through partner organizations, and many more have experienced awareness training.

Come the tournament, billions more will be watching. It's a chance at victory we can't pass up. Learn more about Lace Up Save Lives and join the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Even with a 3-2 defeat on the second game of the final, the Boys from the Vila solidified a spectacular campaign in the Sao Paulo state championship by taking the title for their first time, the 18th for the club.

The young stars led an attack that scored more than 100 goals this season. Together, the boys scored 72 goals in 23 games, an average over 3 goals per game.

In 2009 the boys missed the net. But this year, with Robinho's arrival, no one could hold them back.
