Play To Be Remembered

Posted by DonJulio Apr 29, 2010

Sixty years ago the USA caused one of soccer's biggest upsets ever when they beat England side 1-0 at the 1950 finals, despite being 500-to-1 underdogs on a seven game losing streak. The victory was thought to be a misprint in newspapers worldwide.

The new 2010 home kit pays homage to that victory with a modern update that looks toward writing the future.

Appearing in their sixth consecutive finals this summer, the USA will hope to be inspired by the feats of their forefathers and go beyond one victory, beyond the first round, and play deep into the tournament.

"They say the U.S. doesn't have soccer history," Nike's Design Director for Football Thom Walker says. "But there's loads of history. What they don't have is a uniform tradition. So that is why we wanted to focus on something from the past that people have remembered as being a great jersey and a great moment in U.S. Soccer."

Featuring the latest in technological design, lightness makes greatness for athletes and fans alike, who will be able to get every ounce out of their performance with the new home kit.

Now there is only one thing to do: Play to be remembered.

Write The Future.

In the anticipated confrontation between Ronaldo and Adriano, the Emperor was victorious. With his penalty kick goal, the red-and-black from Rio won the first match against Corinthians in the eighth final round of the Libertadores cup, all under intense rain at the Maracana stadium.

The second half of this battle will take place at the Pacaembu stadium, Corinthians' home turf, next Wednesday. The current Brazilian champion has the advantage of playing for a draw to advance in the competition. Even a defeat by one goal ensures qualification, as long as the red-and-black scores in Sao Paulo.

Timao, on the other hand, has to win by two goals. A victory by the black-and-whites by 1-nil will lead to a penalty shootout. Who will qualify?

Lisandro Leads By Example

Lisandro leads by example. A man of few words, you can count on him raising his game when the chips are down.

Tonight he faces two challenges. Take Lyon into uncharted waters and book his own ticket to South Africa.

If his teammates need inspiration tonight, all they’ll have to do is look in his direction.

Fulham's Future

Posted by DonJulio Apr 21, 2010

Even after more than 100 years of soccer there is still a new future to write.

On Thursday Fulham returns to European competition, deeper in a continental tournament than every before.

Clint Dempsey's crafty chip-in put the cottagers into the quarterfinals, and after a hardfought battle they're in to the semis.

Every game is a new one, but this is one Fulham has never seen.

Will we see the whites do it again and make it to the finals?

Edson Buddle Is On A Tear

Posted by DonJulio Apr 19, 2010

Edson Buddle is on a tear.

Four games into the season, LA's striker has 7 goals--a league record that also equals the output of D.C., Toronto, and his crosstown rivals combined.

Keep up the pace all season, and the 28-year-old American will score 52 goals.

Keep it up for another month, and Buddle will have a strong case to be called into the national team.

For the better part of a year, USMNT coaches have been searching for strikers to take to South Africa.

Have they found a new option right under their noses in LA?

360

Posted by DonJulio Apr 19, 2010

This move is about balance and speed of execution.

Dribble the ball at the defender, turn to shield the ball as you reach him and, keeping your back to him, put your foot on top of the ball and bring it all the way round.

Anticipation and speed makes the 360 one of the smoothest moves out there.

A good player knows what they’re going to do before the ball reaches them. Start your journey.

Two Goals To Change A Season

In the most hostile atmospheres, it's crucial to keep a cool head.

1-0 down in the Rome derby, Mirko Vucinic dispatched a penalty to equalize before smashing home a free-kick for the winner.

Ten minutes to change a game. Two goals to change a season.

Can Mirko and the Giallorossi maintain their slender lead at the top or will Inter rally to claim another Scudetto?

Add speed to the art of deception.

Lure your defender in by dribbling towards him. As he moves to make the tackle, use a high-speed side-step to fake him out and quickly cut the ball back inwards.

In. Out. Gone. Start your journey.

One Move To Write The Future

Posted by DonJulio Apr 9, 2010

A footballer can change his team’s fate with just one move.

One-tenth of a second can decide whether a team is the champion or just the best of the losers.

This Saturday, 22 players will compete for victory in Madrid. A war made up of dozens of battles per minute, in which each move could prove lethal. Racing up the line in their halves to get their teammates the ball in scoring positions will be a battle between Alves and Ramos. Taking ownership of the pitch and leaving the opponent’s efforts in dust – that will be the competition between Puyol and Albiol. The ever-present attack in the midfield will be a head-to-head race between Iniesta and Van der Vaart. The element of surprise which will overwhelm the wings stars Pedro and Marcelo.

Above all, the objective of each move, the one thing that makes you win or loose and makes it all worthwhile is the speed of Cristiano, Zlatan and Bojan.

22 players. 1 big match. 1 opportunity.

Write The Future.

A team of teenagers from all over Johannesburg received the rare chance to train for Master Speed with a master coach.

New (NIKE)RED ambassador Guus Hiddink trained the group of 30 young footballers at the home of South African football in Soweto.

Absorbing unique insights from the elite coach in a once in a lifetime training and Q & A session, the kids learned drills designed to increase speed through technical conditioning.

With Hiddink in control, it was all about speed and writing the future through hard work and intense focus. "To be the best," Guus told the kids, "you have to train like the best".

Go to Nike Soccer Twitter and search #insidethepro for all of Hiddink's insights and check out Guus's response to some of your questions below.

Andrew 'Duey' Du: "Hey Mr. Hiddink, what's your personal favourite speed drill?"
Guus: "You have to analyse speed. You can improve speed but it is also given by nature. There is not so much to do to improve it drastically, but there are of course drills to improve. You can try to improve speed on a track or artificial surface, but in football you have to relate it always to technical exercises."

Adam Thomas: "Guus, what overall percentage of a player's ability is a direct result of his physical condition?"
Guus: "Football today is becoming more and more of an athletic game, but we must not go just to the physical part of the game. Technical skills of players always have to be dominant. But it must be a balance of physical skills and technical skills."

Gabriel J Luna: "Guus, when you face fast teams, with players like Rooney, Nanni, Dani Alves, CR9 is the off-side trap not the first option? How do you counter their speed tactically without compromising the team's offensive mindset?"
Guus: "Mostly you must try to get them to play in their weak zone, not in their comfort zone. For Rooney, you must try to get him tired by making him do defence work as well. That's difficult because the reason he is so good is because he is usually controlling the situation. You must try to get them on their weak spots."

Master Tacticians

After a classic European match of goals, suspensions and controversy, Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola face the prospect of guiding their teams through an equally explosive second leg.

Pep had Barcelona and Zlatan Ibrahimovic dominating the first leg until Wenger's introduction of Theo Walcott changed the game and swung it back into the Gunners' favour.

With a semi-final place at stake, and without some of the world's finest attacking players, both managers will pit all of their experience and expertise against each other in the biggest clash of the season.

Will they stay true to their attacking ethos?

How would you respond?
