Lightness Makes Greatness

Posted by DonJulio Feb 26, 2010

Lightness makes greatness, and with the new Nike national team kits re-writing the rules for elite apparel, players will be even better prepared to write history in South Africa.

The new jerseys cool the body 7 percent more than the previous incarnations; it's 13 percent lighter and stretches 10 percent more to create one of the most permeable DriFit fabric that's cut to fit better than ever before.

"It's not about light weight," Design Director for Football Thom Walker says. "It's about the right weight."

What weight remains comes from the 8 plastic bottles used to create each of the 100 percent recycled polyester jerseys. Laser-perforated mesh on the sides and a full-mesh back drop some weight and ensure cooling where the body needs it most. Bonded, instead of stitched, seams ensure maximum athlete comfort.

From the unique, perforated numbers and lettering to the Inner Pride graphic on the inside of each federation crest, not a single design element was overlooked, creating a custom and considered design for each nation. The new kits ensure athletes and fans alike will be able to get every ounce out of their own performance.

After the excitement of the first day of the Write The Future launch, day two needed to pull out all the stops.

From the exclusive national team kit catwalk to the recycled technology behind the uniform design, the second day strongly continued to deliver innovation.

Comfort and lightness were at the heart of the new national team kit blueprint, with Dri-fit reducing the accumulation of sweat, and the shirts’ meshed side panels dispersing body heat.

Appearances from a host of international footballers, including Alexandre Pato, Clint Dempsey, Nani, and Ryan Nelsen, gave attendees a close up, personal view of some of the shirts that will be worn in South Africa.

Will one of those shirts be worn by the winning captain?

USMNT Laces Up

Posted by DonJulio Feb 25, 2010

In Tampa Bay last night the USMNT pulled off an injury time goal to secure a 2-1 victory over El Salvador in what is one of the last chances for coach Bradley to take a look at his player pool in preparation for South Africa.

With the spotlight firmly on the African nation thanks to soccer, it's more important than ever to harness the power sport can provide.

With that in mind, the USMNT showed their support for the Lace Up Save Lives campaign designed to use the power of soccer to raise awareness on the fight against AIDS In Africa.

The stadium side boards were dressed in RED, and the players tied on (NIKE)RED laces and (NIKE)RED track jackets.

Gotta Have Hope

Posted by DonJulio Feb 24, 2010

It was a game of twos, but one woman proved to be the difference maker.

In their first game of the first big tournament of the year, the USWNT scored 2 goals in 2 minutes.

But it was Hope Solo's 2 penalty kick saves that made this game world-class for the world's #1 team.

Solo, along with Captain Shannon Boxx, Abby Wambach, Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd, Lori Lindsey and the rest of the team will try to maintain that highest of standards as they continue toward the championship match.

With Hope you always have a chance.

Mercurial Magic

Posted by DonJulio Feb 22, 2010

In a prolific weekend for the strikers, the Mercurials were worth more than their light weight in goals.

Back in Brazil for less than a month, Robinho has fired three goals in three games while another Brazilian, Alexandre Pato, got himself on the scoresheet along with strike partner, Marco Borriello, for the Rossoneri in Serie A.

Nicklas Bendtner scored the winner for Arsenal in the Premier League, and over in La Liga Nilmar bagged one at the Bernabeu as Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show with a master class performance and a sensational free kick opener.

We got a shot of Robinho's Mercurials with (RED) laces, but if you want to see the next generation of Mercurial, make sure you’re on the Nike Soccer Facebook page for the exclusive launch at 1pm EST, Wednesday, February 24th. Don't miss out.

Three Times Aguirre

Posted by DonJulio Feb 20, 2010

Playing at home against the current champions isn't easy.

But if in just 8 seconds you're down 0-1, the task complicates further, for everyone except Wilmer Aguirre.

The Peruvian striker not only supported the Lace Up Save Lives campaign, wearing NIKE(RED) laces in his Mercurials, he also made the difference in a historic victory for the 'intimos'.

Fast and lethal, Aguirre did what he wanted with the defenders. His three superb goals owned the night, and thousands in Lima, Peru, are still celebrating.

It Only Gets Harder

Posted by DonJulio Feb 18, 2010

Landon Donovan is having a dream start to his abbreviated time in England. Now halfway through the loan spell, things will only get harder.

America's best goal scorer held his own at Arsenal, participated in his first English Derby, got a taste of European competition, and just won player of the month honors for the Toffees. But on Saturday, Manchester United comes calling.

Tim Howard will have his hands full with Wayne Rooney; can Donovan provide similar threat on the other end?

It won't be easy, but the Premiership never is. It only gets harder from here.

Carnaval Turns Blue

Posted by DonJulio Feb 18, 2010

Nothing is more representative of the joy that characterizes the Brazilian people than Carnaval.

So what better way to introduce the Brazilian National Team's new away jersey, honoring a team that gives so much joy to their enamored fans.

Robinho debuted the new uniform at Marquês de Sapucaí, the famed corridor for Carnaval.

The new jersey has the latest in modern technology, innovation, shape and comfort for athletes.

The blue color amplifies the visual novelty of this new version: the entire front has prints in yellow pigment, which give the sensation that the symbolic and victorious color of the official uniform is emanating from the fabric and brings the two jerseys closer together. The details on the collar and shoulders complete the design.

Want the inside look at more kits including the U.S., Brazil, and other nations?

From a secret location in London on 2.24 and 2.25, Nike will write a new chapter in football history where a revolution in national team kit design will be revealed.

Responsibility

Posted by adamspangler Feb 17, 2010

When you are a big team, you are the team to defeat. Generating envy in your rivals and agitating your faithful followers, who support you in every battle, giving you the necessary energy to rise victorious from every challenge.

Derbys carry a different vibe, just like the one that took place in Mexico's capital city last weekend. It was a pride duel, built on the titles won over the years and wounds that both teams have made on each other in the past.

America accomplished something that most people doubted it could, keeping its dominance over one of its most bitter rivals, and doing it with plenty of authority. The rage that had been built inside the fans came out as a roar that cleared up who's the boss in this rivalry; A 16 game dominance is not a matter of luck.

Las Aguilas keep the dream alive: Flying high making the difference.

Rooney Silences San Siro

Posted by DonJulio Feb 17, 2010

A great match between two great teams. The one difference was Wayne Rooney.

But it didn't start that way. Ronaldinho had Milan on top after just 3 minutes and controlled much of the first half. But Manchester United woke up right before the break and tied the game, setting up a second half primed for The Rooney Show.

Deadly accuracy did not disappoint. Two goals in ten minutes. Two surprise headers caught San Siro silent, and even a late goal couldn't bring them back.

To England now - will it be any different in the second leg?

When Cristiano Ronaldo comes back he forces himself to go one step further.

He's the first to learn a lesson and the first to put the solution into practice.

He's missed games but not training, where he's improving every aspect of his game.

The result: 17 matches and 17 goals.

He comes back and nails it.

School In Session

Posted by DonJulio Feb 15, 2010

You stand over the ball just outside the penalty box. A wall builds between you and the goal keeper.

Everyone knows it's coming.

But where is it going? Over the bar and into the stands or crashing into the top corner?

This weekend in Mexico, Jose Francisco Torres gave us a lesson with a left-footed bending blast, which turned out to be the match winner.

Trajectory, Spin, Speed. Over the wall. Out of reach.

School is in session. Are you taking notes?

More Than A Goal

On a new team in Thessaloniki, Greece, Freddy Adu is finding a new beginning.

The still young American midfielder received the #11 shirt upon his arrival--the first sign of a newfound respect. And now a first goal--the game winner over the weekend that lifted his team out of a weeks-long slump.

It's just one goal, but it could mean more?

A Bradley Trademark

Posted by DonJulio Feb 13, 2010

Nearly all the attention of American fans is currently on England, but Michael Bradley is continuing his quiet resilience and deadly accuracy in Germany.

Quickly becoming his trademark, the American midfielder sliced the defense with another laser pass, this time a 30-yard through-ball from the mid line which led to the first goal in a 2-1 victory.

His stellar pass and all-around solid play won't show up on the scorecard, but as we learned a few weeks ago, Bradley isn't looking for attention. He's just wants the ball.

Manchester United had a fight on their hands. They'd lost their last two games and were 2-1 down to Aston Villa. Hopes of retaining the league were fading.

Cristiano Ronaldo brought the sides level with 10 minutes to go. The comeback was on. But deep into stoppage time, Man Utd could not find the winner.

The ball fell to 17-year old Federico Macheda. With deft skill, he turned his marker and curled a shot into the corner.

Man Utd had all three points, a renewed grip on their title and a bright new star. Sir Alex himself described the wonder strike as "the defining moment of our season."

Now you've got all five goals. Which do you think is best?

Mooki

Posted by DonJulio Feb 12, 2010

Nhlanghla Dube (Mooki) is a 19-year-old defensive midfield player for Zimbabwean Premier League team Highlanders.

In between games and training sessions for Highlanders, Mooki spends time coaching boys and girls for Grassroot Soccer in his home town of Bulawayo.

"I take the issue personal, recently my uncle died of HIV/AIDS," Mooki says.

The Grassroot Soccer training sessions integrate soccer skills and fitness with life skills training, particularly focused on HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and removing stigmas about the virus and the disease.

His favorite part of the curriculum is TeamTalk. By sharing personal stories, children learn they are not alone. Knowing that it has happened to more people makes the kids stronger.

"Training kids about HIV/AIDS using soccer is the only way to fight this issue," Mooki says. "They love soccer; I love soccer. When I am with the kids, I forget, and I am free--they are free."

Next season Mooki will be working on getting Highlanders back to the top of the Premier League. "The teams in Harare have had it good too long."

Join the fight and help fight the must-win battle against AIDS in Africa.

Best Yet

Posted by DonJulio Feb 11, 2010

Before Landon Donovan arrived in Liverpool the Toffees earned 22 points in 19 games. In the 6 games since his arrival, they've raddled off 13 points.

That bubbling success continued to grow Wednesday with the addition of Landon's energy.

London's current top club had no answer for Donovan who owned the right flank while adding an assist to his premiership totals. He also drew a penalty kick after being brought down in the first half.

Clearly his best game yet. Can he continue the momentum into South Africa this summer?

The Nerazzurro Spirit

Posted by DonJulio Feb 11, 2010

Thanks to excellent technical skills, accuracy, and strength, Inter Milan has become the best team in Italy. But it's not just skill; the “nerazzurro” spirit makes the difference.

With love for soccer and his team, Marco Materazzi harnessed that spirit and fought through pain until the end of the match. That effort fuels the spirit and gives the team the strength to overcome.

The Italian defender suffered the injury in the middle of the second half with no chance for substitution. He had to stay on field. So Inter moved him to striker. He was not decisive in the match result (as an injured player usually is), but he was decisive for team strength, for "nerazzurro."

This is Marco Materazzi’s nature. This defines "nerazzurro." This makes the difference.

One Perfect Second

Posted by DonJulio Feb 9, 2010

The ball leaves your teammate’s boot and in less than a second it’s flying over you.

The defender follows you closely. But not close enough. Two yards of grass are enough to see you flying away. By the third step you’re in the air.

That's all Sergio Ramos needed to make the difference with the technical skill only the rare few could grasp.

A perfect twist of the head, and the goal is finished off inside the far post.

Ramos showed once again that he’s not just one of the best defenders in the world, but also one of the best masters of the header.

The precision of his boots doesn’t limit him to making passes to his forwards – he also knows what to do when he’s on the receiving end.

Defense is in his blood. Precision in his feet. Goals in his head.

Vucinic’s Strike

Posted by DonJulio Feb 8, 2010

Never stop believing. Up to the very end, you have to try taking 3 points at home.

After almost 90 minutes of perfect defense, it’s time to make the difference.

Mirko Vucinic, fighting for every ball until that final whistle blows, finally finds space after a corner kick in the 82nd minute to collect and blast the ball under the crossbar.

1-0 for Rome. With only Inter Milan above them on the table, it’s just the beginning for Vucinic.

As in this game, the Montenegrin forward will fight to the very end to be league champions.

This will be Landon's first Derby since going abroad in January and his most intense challenge yet.

Landon will be called upon to continue the form that even has former Reds calling him, "the best signing of the January transfer window."

And with Tim Howard between the posts, the Blues of Merseyside always have a chance as he looks for his third shutout in a row.

The Reds want back into the top four and the Blues want back into Europe.

So close, so far. The semi-finals of Europe’s elite club competition are almost here.

Barcelona, down 1-0 in southwest London, entered the third minute of stoppage time needing a goal.

The ball broke on the left side of the field, and Iniesta calmly took a couple of steps back.

As a pass found his feet, the Spaniard edged forward and planted the ball into the top corner.

The stadium erupted. Iniesta ran to the by-line to celebrate. Guardiola sprinted half the length of the pitch in joy. And Barcelona went on to become the first club in Spanish football to complete a historic treble.

Was Iniesta's strike the best T90 goal ever?

The Italian international will be looking to fire The Viola to victory in Sunday’s crucial league match but as Gilardino will tell you; accuracy has to be earned.

Pedro Doesn't Daydream

Posted by DonJulio Feb 2, 2010

Imagine you are a young forward. Imagine you are part of a team that can win everything. Imagine your team has scored more goals than any other in Europe.

Now, stop imagining and rise to the challenge. Make the most of every opportunity.

If the team wins competitions you must play a decisive role. If your team scores goals, you must score them too. Yesterday, Pedro did it again: he doesn’t daydream, he acts.

He picked up a carefully-measured pass from Iniesta on the run. He put pace behind the ball until he was facing the goal. The goal keeper covered the far post, the place where any striker would aim in order to do most damage. Big mistake. Pedro isn’t any forward. Nearside post and a goal.

Pedro doesn’t daydream. Pedro just makes the difference.

Nine Is Fine

Posted by DonJulio Feb 1, 2010

Flying under the radar of personal highlights, "Nine Americans started in England, France, Germany and Mexico on Saturday, and none lost."

Among the group, Landon Donovan and Tim Howard helped secured another shutout victory. The same goes for Carlos Bocanegra in France. Michael Bradley controlled the midfield against one of the top teams in Germany, and Jose Francisco Torres regained the handle on a starting role in a blowout win in Mexico.

Every player knows winning breads confidence, and with South Africa quickly approaching--just 130 days--the time is now to build the daring mentality that can be the single difference between a win and loss on the world stage.

The 100 Club

In the biggest game of the Premier League season so far, Wayne Rooney helped Manchester United throw down the baton in the race for this season’s title.

It was a fitting stage for the marksman to score his 100th Premier League goal and join an exclusive list of the league’s greatest strikers.

Many clubs were rumored to have been chasing the signature of Fernando Torres. But in the summer of 2007, the Madrid-born striker signed for the red half of Merseyside for a club record fee.

When he took to the field for his home debut against Essien’s Blues, all eyes on the Kop were on him.

After 15 minutes, Fernando raced onto a through ball, muscled his way past the defender, and with pinpoint accuracy stroked the ball past one of the league’s best keepers
