First Among Legends

Posted by DonJulio Dec 30, 2009

Fernando Torres is the fastest player to hit 50 league goals in the Reds’ history.

The Spanish hitman fired in a late dramatic winner in the 93rd minute to claim the win and all three points against Villa.

Fernando has reached his half-century in just 72 league games - that’s 6 faster than anyone else to play for the red half of Merseyside.

And now that he’s wearing the T-90 Laser III, he can only get better. El Nino is eyeing the golden boot.

Watch Fernando talk about the T90 Laser III.

History Is Theirs

Posted by DonJulio Dec 21, 2009

There are simply no more trophies left to win.

After 120 minutes of football in Abu Dhabi, Barcelona became the first side ever, to hold every single club trophy at once.

Pep Guardiola has led his team into history. No side has ever achieved this. And no team can ever beat it.

This victory is forever.

The Basics

Posted by socshep18 Dec 21, 2009

To beat the best you have to excel on both sides of the ball.

The goals you score are only as good as the ones you keep out out of your own net.

Few expected Clint Dempsey and Fulham to take those basic rules to
the extreme against Manchester United over the weekend.

But that's exactly what they did.

Ruthless attack up top grounded by an organized back line allowed Fulham to knock the
fire out of Manchester's red giants with a near-perfect team effort.

Can Clint and the Fulham side begin a climb towards the top in the new year?

DaMarcus Beasley is now on to his 2nd goal in as many games, with
3 assists as well for his Rangers side.

That's a hot streak, transforming wonder into demand.

Demand for DaMarcus on the field.

Demand for the ball at his feet.

And potential demand for South Africa.

A World Legend at 22

Posted by DonJulio Dec 17, 2009

If you’re a forward, you have to score goals.

If you want to be one of the top forwards in Europe, you have to score goals in key games.

And if you truly want to win titles, be decisive every time you play. It’s the only way to earn the right to win.

Your football ambition must not know any barriers. There’s no choice – score and score often.

Pedro Rodriguez set himself the challenge and achieved it. He has just entered the world of football history as the first player to score in six different competitions in the same season.

Is there anything more than this? Yes. Start from scratch.

Pedro makes history. Pedro makes the difference.

No team has ever held every single club trophy at once. None has even come close. Until now.

Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona stand on the edge of history. If the Catalan Kings win the tournament in Adu Dhabi this month, they’ll be crowned world champions.

They will then have won every single club trophy in one season. A feat unmatched by any other team. Ever.

History awaits.

The Final Say

Despite playing out of his favored position, he turned the backline inside-out and defined his moment with an unstoppable strike, winning the game and silencing the opposition yet again.

He's made p-17027. Destiny now awaits.

Players Lounge Opening

Posted by DonJulio Dec 11, 2009

Ever walk into a shoe store looking for a new pair of boots only to fire questions over the heads of employees:

How's the feel of the upper on the ball?
Will this texture affect my ball striking?
Why is the cleat pattern laid out like this?

You want the perfect boot for your game, but it turns out that the hired help doesn’t know the answers to your questions.

Everyone has been there.

Working to right that wrong is the new Nike Soccer Shop and Players Lounge at Soccer Fanatic Laguna Hills just off I-5 South of Los Angeles. Walk into the southern California soccer shop confident the people working are players and aware of modern athletes' needs.

To celebrate its grand opening this weekend, on Saturday December 12, the new SoCal Nike Soccer Shop location will offer free trials of the new CTR360 Maestri boot and the Nike Soccer Elite Training Program, a digital, online experience through which players can access videos featuring drills and advice from pro players and coaches. Just released, this is one of the first opportunities for players to get their hands on the technology and feet in the boots.

While you're taking the test drive, USMNT veteran Gregg Berhalter will be on hand to take your questions and give tips on his favorite training methods.

By the time you leave, you’ll have the tools you need to go from moments of success to 90 minutes of domination.

29 Times More "Popular"

Posted by DonJulio Dec 10, 2009

The "Cacique" did it again.

Yesterday, the Chilean team won the local tournament's final game and added another star to its rich history.

With their captain, Arturo Sanhueza, wearing red laces in support of Lace Up Save Lives, the "albos" showed they certainly know how to play a final.

The struggle and suffering throughout the tournament ended up with the trophy in the hands of "Rey Arturo."

But this triumph is not only for Chile, it's also for Venezuela and Argentina: Jose Manuel Rey and Ezequiel Miralles now form part of the "most popular's" history.

One more league title. 29 and counting...

Inter Milan wins another battle in the long continental war.

They entered the field thinking about nothing but moving forward: Sneijder behind three strikers with Balotelli absolutely determined to make the difference.

Determination, tactical cleverness, and a wonderful backheel assist in the first half and a powerful free kick in the second. 2-0.

Hello Balotelli. Godbye Rubin.

There is no choice: if you want to be considered the best, you have to make the difference. Take a look how Balotelli trains to stay on the crest of the wave.

32 Nations. 1 Mission

Posted by DonJulio Dec 9, 2009

The groups are drawn, the matches set and history awaits.

The chosen 32 have earned their tickets to South Africa. But belief and an appetite for glory will now be put to the test on the world's biggest stage. Who's hungry?

Expect danger and perfection in equal doses when Drogba, Fabiano and Ronaldo clash in the early stages. All three lethal finishers will aim to change the game at all times. Backlines brace yourselves...

England will go into their first match against the USMNT with plenty of confidence, having blazed to the top of their qualification group. Combine Rooney's ruthless eye for goal, Ferdinand's strength and Theo's lightning-quick pace, and you have a team ready for business.

But no longer considered inexperienced upstarts, Landon Donovan's side has proved they can hold their own, beating the world #1 and finishing second in South Africa this past summer. So expect the unexpected.

And it's not just about the big guns. The smaller nations will also be eager to shake things up this summer.

Michael Essien, Muntari, Song and Obi Mikel will be holding it down for the African nations and baring their teeth with the best of them. South Korea and Australia provide the giant killing potential and look to cause 2010 upsets. As South Africa draws near, one thing is for certain - everyone believes they can win it, but only one team will prove it.

Who will go all the way? Have your say at facebook.com/nikesoccer.

Torino Laces Up

Posted by DonJulio Dec 8, 2009

Juventus vs Inter Milan is never just a soccer game, but this year the Italian derby had a special meaning. Players all over the field wore (NIKE)RED laces to fight against AIDS in Africa, while the stadium was transformed completely red.

Olimpico of Turin, home of the Italian for more than 100 years, sprang to life with a new color for the first time--RED. Fans still donned their white and black or blue and black, but the stadium wore red. The nets, the benches, the tunnels--everything read "Lace Up Save Lives."

In solidarity for the fight, the city of Turin turned Mole Antoneliana, the most famous city symbol, red as well. Under a glowing sunset, RED was inescapable.

Juventus won the game, but all of Turin was laced up.

Pro Combat Player Of The Week

Posted by DonJulio Dec 7, 2009

The best come ready for battle. But who battled best this week?

It's not about scoring goals. It's about total match performance. It's about running all over the field, winning every 50/50 ball. It's all the intangibles that don't show up on the score sheet but in the end turn the game for your team.

That's a Pro Combat Player, and now it's your turn to tell us who is the Pro Combat Player of the Week.

We'll select three players who personified what it means to be a Pro Combat Player from the weekend, and then you tell us who you thought
came best prepared for battle.

To vote, go to facebook.com/nikesoccer and click on Pro Combat Player Of The Week. We'll announce your winner on Wednesday.

The winter break is quickly approaching. Games are becoming more important. Who stepped up this week? Here's the three we've selected who exemplified what it means to be a Pro Combat Player. Now you tell us which battled the best.

http://inside.nike.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-23004-59701/arshavinPCPOTW.jpg

Andrei Arshavin
The Russian midfielder took a step towards becoming a bruising presence in England moving up the formation to play striker for injury-riddled Arsenal. He took the work and constant movement his midfield game is known for and added muscle to survive in the trenches of the penalty box. He drew one penalty and forced his way through defenders to pick up one goal. And he could have had five, a fact that edged him to the top of the player ratings.

http://inside.nike.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-23004-59700/milnerPCPOTW.jpg

James Milner
Another player out of position. Another man making the difference. The coach called his one goal, one assist, man of the match performance phenomenal, but that doesn't explain the entire package that Milner showed on the field for Aston Villa. Sticking into tackles on both sides of the field, the young English playmaker may have found a new home in the center of the field, and possibly one on England's side in South Africa.

http://inside.nike.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-23004-59699/howardPCPOTW.jpg

Tim Howard
The American goal keeper is single-handedly keeping the Toffees running as the team struggles to find their form this year. Coming off a nine-save performance on the continent, Howard again was throwing his body at the ball even before the penalty kick came his way in stoppage time. His mind-games with the shooter and the following kick-save earned him save of the match, yet it might not have been the best of his six-save day.

Intimidation Is Priceless

Posted by DonJulio Dec 7, 2009

When a team is struggling, one man too often carries the burden when it comes to making the difference: the goal keeper. Following up a nine-save performance in European competition, Tim Howard posted six saves against London's Lily Whites. But it was his save of the match--a stoppage time penalty kick that he caught off his shins by holding his ground in the center of the goal--that gave the team an important point in a game in which they came back from two-down.

On the weekend following the draw in South Africa, Howard stared down a would-be English star who the American might see in a similar spot, but on the other side of the world, next summer. So while a point in England is precious, intimidation for South Africa is priceless.

All The Difference

Posted by DonJulio Dec 3, 2009

With an injury-riddled back line trying to hold the tide in front of him, Tim Howard has seen his fair share of shots this season in England. A robot could do no better with the firestorm that the USMNT's starting goal keeper sees on a routine basis.

That is especially true when Howard becomes the shot-stopping machine he was last night.

Posting no less than nine saves to preserve a 1-0 shutout, Howard single-handedly put his team into the next round of the continental competition. What more can you ask for? What more could he give?

For the Toffees, Howard made all the difference on Wednesday night.

Now he will watch with the rest of us as the draw for South Africa is announced on Friday. Who will Howard have to face first? After the draw check out the streaming Facebook event, Live With Landon, for a live post-draw discussion with Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Robbie Rogers, and Jonathan Bornstein.

Kobe Laces Up

Posted by DonJulio Dec 2, 2009

He might be all about basketball, but that's not the only thing on Kobe's mind.

Last night Los Angeles's most famous athlete tied on RED shoe laces, helping his other favorite sport, soccer, raise awareness and funds to fight the global AIDS pandemic through Nike Soccer's Lace Up Save Lives. The shoes and laces will be auctioned off with all the proceeds benefiting RED.

A longtime fan of the world's game from having spent part of his childhood in Italy, where his father played professional basketball, one has to wonder what kind of player he would be on the soccer field.

While soccer fans dream of that idea, on the court last night Kobe posted 18 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals, and only played 33 minutes. Once their 7th consecutive victory was in the bag, the LA superstar received some much needed rest. It's early in the season, and Kobe has big plans.

Clubs are jockeying for position as they head toward the winter break. Who stepped up this week? Here's the three we've selected who exemplified what it means to be a Pro Combat Player. Now you tell us which battled the best.

http://inside.nike.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-22698-58874/puyol2.jpg

Carlos Puyol
Madrid got the ball into Barcelona's defensive third, but thanks to Puyol, they went no further. Several last minute tackles proved decisive in killing shots at goal. The captian's ability to not only direct a defense but also be first to step in and make game saving tackles made it obvious he would warrant the highest player rating on the field.

http://inside.nike.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-22698-58875/zlatan5372.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
If you are going to keep one of your best as a substitute, would you want him to do anything more than what Zlatan did this week, be a clear cut difference maker. That's exactly what the Swedish forward did by slotting home a slick game-winner five minutes after he stepped onto the field in the most high pressure of situations.
