Now It Matters

Posted by DonJulio Oct 30, 2009

Two Teams. Two national team stars. One City.

The only Super Clasico in the U.S. never quite deserved the honor of that title.

That changes Sunday when USMNT stars Landon Donovan and Jonathan Bornstein go head to head in the most meaningful derby in the nation's history.

It's offense versus defense, the player of the year versus the Honduran Hero battling for the same ball.

Two games. Two chances to make the difference.

Who owns this city, and who moves on in the playoffs?

Super Mario Smashes It

Posted by DonJulio Oct 29, 2009

Sometimes you witness the precise moment a promising talent moves up several gears into the major league.

For the man they call Super Mario, it happened in just 48 minutes. Last night, Balotelli scored two, created one and won the penalty for another. He even had to be dragged away from taking the spot kick by the regular penalty taker. Balotelli is not lacking confidence.

Watch the video to see how Balotelli hones his touch and dribbling.

Will his skills and growing confidence be enough to book him a ticket to South Africa?

A CARD FOR CD9

Posted by DonJulio Oct 29, 2009

When a teammate, a brother, a countryman goes down, you rally behind him. And that is exactly what the American soccer family has done for Charlie Davies after a car accident left him hospitalized earlier this month. More than 10,000 supportive emails poured into the inbox set up by US Soccer.

Now that the young striker is on the road to recovery, we at Nike Soccer want to send him something to show we're behind him on this journey back to the field. We decided a custom "get well soon" card would be best.

But before we send it off to DC, we want all of our family to sign the card, which means you. Here's what to do:

Log onto Twitter and send a reply to @nikesoccer using the hashtag filter #CD9 as part of your message for Charlie.

Something like: @nikesoccer Get Well Charlie! You're gonna be back on the field in no time. #CD9

To see all of the responses, simply search Twitter for #CD9.

Messages sent in before Monday, November 9, at 12pm EST will be incorporated into the design of the custom card, and we'll let everyone know what the final card looks like after we deliver it.

Thanks, we really appreciate your participation.

Not Today

Posted by DonJulio Oct 29, 2009

After a long layoff, no matter how many hours you train, you never know what its going to be like back on the field.

Add in the defending world champions, their glossy new sold out stadium in Augsburg, and put the world #1 ranking on the line.

It could be a recipe for disaster.

But the USWNT went in as the world #1 and were willing to scrap and scramble to keep it.

A strong defense backed by the busy hands of Hope Solo kept the attacking Germans off the scoresheet, while in typical fashion Abby Wambach took her chance when it came.

A first half hardscrabble header from the stalwart striker proved to be the difference maker, giving her 101 goals in just 130 CAPS and the squad a 1-0 shutout.

They say the world is catching up to the US women. But not today.

Back To Business

Posted by DonJulio Oct 27, 2009

Three months since the last game.

A solid month of training camp.

You can't wait to get out there and be the first to every ball.

Game Time. Finally. A stage that makes all the training worth while.

After a lengthy hiatus due to the inaugural season of the American domestic league, Abby Wambach, Carli Lloyd, Shannon Boxx, and Hope Solo lead the #1 world ranked USWNT into Germany Thursday to take on the two-time defending world champions in Augsburg. Dependable veterans and youthful potential make up a reworked U.S. side looking to top off a so far undefeated 2009 (6-0-1).

Can they prove to the world that #1 is not just a number?

Three Minutes

Posted by DonJulio Oct 27, 2009

Derbies need to be won.

That's the entirety of thought in the week leading up the Mexican classic of classics.

It's a phrase that America took seriously last week and took to heart immediately after the opening whistle.

Three minutes in, a superb header from Colombian Aquivaldo Mosquera sent America ahead and millions into hysterics.

That was all they needed. The Mexican derby was all blue and yellow, the difference made in just 180 seconds.

The Aguilas keep flying high.

Something About The Blues

Posted by DonJulio Oct 26, 2009

Last season it was a brace on the road to lead Fulham over City.

A year later and again Clint Dempsey makes the difference. There must be something the Texan likes about playing the Blues from Manchester.

Heading home Fulham's second goal in a five-minute span, Dempsey provided the equalizer to secure an important road point against a team perfect at home.

Even more impressive, this crucial point came in the club's third match in six days. The Whites now have as much time to prepare for their next battle when they welcome a rejuvenated Liverpool to London.

Can Dempsey continue to be a threat in the box and ruin Liverpool's recent high?

Can you stand it?

Posted by DonJulio Oct 26, 2009

Pressure changes everything.

On Sunday, Fernando was only 80 percent fit, burdened with expectation and desperate to end a four-game losing streak for his club.

But when your back is against the wall, there is only one way to go.

El Nino burst into the box, shrugged off his man and fired into the roof of the net.

Pressure tastes good.

Seattle In His Sights

Posted by DonJulio Oct 26, 2009

One game to complete what looked impossible a year ago.

One game to go from last place to conference champion.

One game to make the difference.

Closing out the regular season on Saturday night, Landon Donovan led Los Angeles to the top of the western conference table by providing both goals--a composed slotted finish past the keeper and a deflected own goal--in a 2-0 shutout of San Jose.

After the game Landon was named LA's 2009 MVP. The year is closing up nicely for the American standout, but there is one trophy still to be claimed.

Bring on the playoffs.

Who Can Stop Him?

Posted by DonJulio Oct 26, 2009

We wonder if the mask worn by Giampaolo Pazzini in the last game was meant for a superhero. On field despite a fractured nose and with a protective mask, the striker took less than 8 minutes to pick up a precise invitation from the right and with a soft touch left no escape for the goalkeeper.

Those who hoped to face a weakened player due to physical injury, became petrified from the strength of an uncontrollable Pazzini, who also provided an assist in the 2-0 victory.

Bravery is innate, but the desire to play despite injury - that's what turns a great player into an unstoppable leader.

Sampdoria with this Pazzini can pressure Italy's top teams. Don't be surprised to find them climbing the table higher and higher.

The difference is clear on the field; the fear is clear in defenders' eyes.

The new weapon makes Amauri even more lethal.

Boca Is A Machine

Posted by DonJulio Oct 22, 2009

Their last match was their third consecutive victory in the local tournament thanks to a midfield based on the control of Battaglia and Rosada.

A few weeks ago, atop the table appeared impossible. Now Boca finds itself only 5 points down. Lurking.

Again, their rivals feel the fear when they play against Boca.

Next Sunday they battle their historical enemy in the original Superclasico.

The perfect match to make the difference and continue the rise up the table.

Peerless Pato

Games don't come much bigger. That's why they call it Europe's derby. If you can make the difference on this stage, you know you've got greatness flowing through your veins.

Over to you Pato.

As the Rossoneri went toe-to-toe with their old rivals in Spain last night, the red-hot Brazilian scored twice. A tap-in to take the lead. And a searing volley two minutes from time to seal the historic win.

Just 20 years old. And getting better every day.

Make It Six

1 year. 15 games for his country.

5 goals, 10 assists.

Of the USMNT's 19 qualifying goals, he scored or assisted on 12.

Now, who do you think took home player of the year?

Those stats alone could warrant the award, but Landon Donovan's leadership and total control on the field certainly sealed it.

On Tuesday, the 27-year-old won his third straight and record-breaking sixth U.S. player of the year award. He was also named the player of the decade.

Finishing what may be the best year of his career, you have to wonder what he'll come up with in 2010.

A Chance For European Power

Posted by DonJulio Oct 21, 2009

While the battle of European super powers steals most of the headlines and TV time this week, there is another European cup up for grabs. This battle for European supremacy might be set in the shadows, but for the teams competing it offers huge opportunities to step into the global spotlight.

And anyway, a European trophy is a European trophy.

Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard throw themselves back into the continental calendar on Thursday as the final round of their group play begins.

A relative newcomer to the international club game, can Dempsey put his mark on the newest European championship when he takes on the giants of Rome? Can Howard build upon his more extensive experience when he travels to Lisbon?

The Dinho Show

Posted by DonJulio Oct 20, 2009

When a turning point is necessary, when you need to win to regain self confidence, when the opponent is tough and your fans are ready to boo you, that is the moment to make the difference.

It's passion, it's strength, it's the will to win. Over 90 minutes against Rome, Ronaldinho gave more than a great performance:

He demonstrates team spirit, devotion, sacrifice. With his team down 1-0, he took the penalty with the consciousness of being at a crossroads. But nothing can trouble him. The shot was perfect, beginning the move toward victory.

Then magic in the midfield, a very precise pass to Pato, and the game was turned.

San Siro rumbled, giving thanks to it's great protagonist, Ronaldinho.

Inter Like A Landslide

Posted by DonJulio Oct 19, 2009

Without a few starters, a drop in skillful team play could have been expected. But Inter's domination does not discriminate. Whoever dons the jersey must deliver.

And so Inter rolled through Genoa 5-0.

Balotelli coldly created distance, making it 2-0 after scoring from perfect break-back action.

Dejan Stankovic anticipated a lopsided goal kick in the final minutes of the first half and scored from the middle of the field, making it 3-0. The day was done before the half finished.

But the greatest concentration no matter who is on the field is a characteristic that can turn a winning team unbeatable. That's what Inter did in the second half. After the fourth goal, Maicon's intuition leveraged another defensive mistake, sealing it up 5-0.

Perfect Match. Impossible to stop them.

Respect Is Not Enough

Posted by adamspangler Oct 14, 2009

Three years of preparation. 17 months of qualifying.

Four weeks. 32 teams. One champion. Next summer the world descends upon South Africa.

With a 72nd-minute goal from Michael Bradley and a last-minute header from Jonathan Bornstein, the USMNT came from 2 goals down to tie Costa Rica at Washington's RFK Stadium Wednesday night and win the hexagonal. This team does not quit.

The Difference: substitute Robbie Rogers, who came on in the 69th minute, scoured the field for loose balls, broke up plays on defense, and pushed forward in attack.

At the end it resulted in one moment. A Rogers corner kick in extra time. Bornstein jumping higher than the rest. In a split second the game was tied, the hexagonal won.

Elation with pause, for the health of Charlie Davies and for all the work still to be done.

Respect is not enough. South Africa here we come.

When you are already qualified for South Africa and losing 2-0 in the second half, keeping concentration on a win can be difficult.

But not for Alberto Gilardino.

Three goals in 14 minutes.

14 minutes to transform an inglorious defeat into a stunning win.

14 minutes to make the difference.

Can Australia take the next step and cause some damage in South Africa? Will Holland finally fulfill their potential?

It was goalless when the teams met in a friendly. But maybe they're saving their big guns for the big stage.

Portugal Seeks Its Moment

Posted by adamspangler Oct 13, 2009

Football history can be divided into seasons, championships or games, but history is in fact written in short instants. Centimeters that determine whether a pass is good or bad, tenths of a second that give you the advantage or disadvantage. Key moments that separate victory from defeat.

Portugal have 90 minutes before them to seek these instants against Hungary and to get on the road to qualify for South Africa.

How many instants fit in a match?

Ticket Punched

Posted by adamspangler Oct 11, 2009

To qualify for South Africa Saturday night the USMNT needed the full 3 points.

Down 1-0 to Honduras in the 55th minute, it was going to take an effort for the ages, and that's exactly what they gave.

Landon Donovan donned his CTR360s and supplied the game-winner, extending his national team scoring record with an upper 90 curling free kick.

But it would be all for naught without Tim Howard, who provided what seemed like a season's worth of saves to keep Honduras at bay.

Qualified. Mark it down for the sixth consecutive time.

Summer safari booked. See you in South Africa.

Some say that on the pitch midfielders are the ones who win battles. The same is true to gaining a ticket to South Africa, and Mexico proved that on Saturday.

Mexico defeated El Salvador 4-1, and while their strikers were on fire, we shouldn't forget about the midfield.

A brave midfield with two titans: Gerardo Torrado and Israel Castro.

Wearing his CTR360s, Castro was everywhere in the midfield--defending, attacking, and above all leading the charge up field--always in total control of the situation. Control that should seal his place in Mexico's starting eleven and surely guarantees him a ticket to South Africa.

Castro is ready.

Three Years In The Making

After taking on Honduras this Saturday, the team returns to home soil in Washington, DC, to face Costa Rica on October 14. A win in either game means qualification for the finals, but before the party begins, preparation is paramount.

MNT fitness coach Barrieu runs the players through a myriad of drills in order to get their bodies in shape and minds focused for hostile games in sweltering conditions. In the video above, Charlie Davies and Michael Bradley help him demonstrate the Back Peddle Bounce.

Back To Training

Posted by adamspangler Oct 6, 2009

Next year will be a busy year for the #1 ranked international squad. But right now it's all about training for the 23 women called into camp heading into their first game in months, October 29 in Germany when they take on the world champions. Returning stars Abby Wambach, Hope Solo, Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe, and Shannon Boxx will be back together once again, polishing skills that have them at the top of the rankings.

Staying on top is often harder than getting there. Having the success the USWNT has had in the last decade doesn't come without hard work, but staying on top, getting the best game out of every opponent, means training needs to be that much more intense.

The time the women put in now becomes the dividends collected on match day. It's all about finding that personal motivation to continue the killer instinct when the next game is still weeks away. That's where the USWNT finds themselves. Training makes the difference.

In his first game wearing the new CTR360 boots, Landon Donovan scored the night's only goal in a crucial late-season clash with Chicago.

The Los Angeles captain coupled great speed and total control to get on the end of a long through ball sent in from the defensive half. Donovan collected the ball all alone in the offensive third as a falling defender was unable to keep up with him and with one touch from the top of the penalty box perfectly lifted the ball over the keeper.

But total control means more than goals, just like in Donovan's overall game. There is no more complete player in America. His touch was razor sharp all night. Nearly every ball springing from the new boots threatened the defense. The goal was Donovan's 11th, but it was his game-long and season-long leadership that sends LA through to the playoffs.

Donovan now takes his total control and CTR360s to Honduras where the USMNT will try to clinch their place in South Africa.

Not if you're Wesley Sneijder.

Landon's New Weapon

Posted by adamspangler Oct 2, 2009

Control is Everything. In the next two weeks Landon Donovan has two chances to tighten his grip on the game, the playoffs, the world, and he'll attack them all with a new weapon: the CTR360.

Before the USMNT gets its first chance to seal a return to South Africa in 2010 with a victory over Honduras next week, Landon steps onto the field tonight in a crucial late-season league game (ESPN2, 8pm PST), for the first time in the new CTR360 boot, designed specifically for his game--the midfield maestro.

As with Landon's game, the CTR360 does a lot of things well. The outsole is built to maximize a player's ability to trap and control the ball; the upper is refined at key contact points for receiving and distributing the ball. The new synthetic fabric, Kanga-Lite, feels like soft leather but maintains shape in any weather without soaking up water. Wherever Landon starts, stops, turns, and then breaks away, the CTR 360 helps him to bring the ball along with him.

Confident in the boot's control, freeing his eyes to look forward, Landon now has extra time to find passing lanes, darting teammates, or a chance at the goal. America's best just got better.
