Davies' Dream Continues

Posted by adamspangler Aug 31, 2009

As he makes his way to Salt Lake City for the USMNT qualifier against El Salvador on Saturday, Charlie Davies surely slept soundly knowing his spot in Sochaux is safe.

Two games after his two-goal debut, Davies was honored by his French league with a team of the week selection for his performance this past weekend. On top of an overall strong showing, it was the American's fancy footwork that led to him getting cut down in the box. The resulting game-winning PK was all Davies and his teammates needed to defeat Monaco 1-0 this past weekend.

The stout American striker has been on fire this summer. From his coming out party in South Africa to his goal in the cathedral of Mexican sport, Davies has been the difference maker in almost every game he’s played in. France’s top tier hasn’t slowed down the 23-year-old who combines explosive strength, speed, and skill that he constantly improves upon during training and amplifies on the field. As he gets to know his new club team and teammates the future only looks brighter both for Davies and US Soccer.

Ronaldo’s Rebirth

Posted by DonJulio Aug 31, 2009

All hands on deck and all eyes on one man. Every football fan in the world had a thought to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Spanish debut, and it would be understandable for even the consensus world player of the year to be a bit nervous. But if you tuned in for failure, you don’t know this coolest of competitors.

In the 35th minute, with the eyes of the world upon him, Ronaldo stepped to the penalty spot. A deep breadth, a swipe of a sleeve to catch the sweat from his face. Then no hesitation. A bullet barely caught on camera whizzed across the grass and passed the outstretched arms of a goal keeper who even guessed correctly, diving exactly where the ball had been. Past tense, had been. There was no stopping Ronaldo’s perfect penalty strike, and given the moment, perfect can’t pay it due justice.

Derby Demolition

Posted by DonJulio Aug 31, 2009

The best teams learn from experience and build upon the past. Inter Milan did just that in only the second week of the season, and against their crosstown rivals, with whom they share a stadium. How’s 4-0 for a derby thrashing? If week one had Italian football fans questioning the defending champions, week two provided all the answers.

Inter’s new signings made the difference on Saturday, having a hand in nearly every goal. Wesley Sneijder, only signed by the team on Friday, was a surprise starter and tested the goal early. From their it was engineered destruction. Inter never let up. All that preparation showed from tactics to the intangibles. From building the squad, to preparing them properly, Inter were kings for the day, an unstoppable machine every team in Italy will now be fearing.

Better than a Derby

Posted by DonJulio Aug 31, 2009

Back and forth action featuring the precise passing of Arsenal and the muscled management of Manchester United. Fans got what they asked for in the first meeting of the season for two English powerhouses.

A 20-meter strike from Andrei Arshavin, Arsenal’s newest all star, finds the upper 90, powering through the keeper’s hand to start the scoring. A solid penalty from Wayne Rooney, Manchester’s now unquestioned offensive leader, brought the match even. It was edge of your seat madness for 90 minutes.

The red devils took the lead with their second goal in a 5-minute span, which sealed the home victory for Rooney and crew, and left Arsenal forced to look forward. The rematch in London, exactly 5 months from now, will again put the players in the pressure cooker, right where the fans want them, with a much better idea of how the league table is shaking out. January 30th can’t come soon enough.

What has happened so far is past tense. We must forget about past titles, classification rankings or losses. All scoreboards are reset.

The 09/10 season was a milestone, but the League is the League again, a place, where the world’s best players compete to achieve victories.
Cristiano Ronaldo faces the first day with a blank page in front of him. He came to rewrite football history, to erase the past and leave his mark forever.
Albiol, the new promise of Bernabeu will help him on this mission.

But there’s fierce competition waiting, starting with for example Zlatan Ibrahimovic, ready to record his name with golden letters in up to 6 tournaments, a champion who never tires of victory.
Furthermore, this year’s League will count on many selected candidates, who will be ready to make the difference throughout this season:
Kun Agüero, who will recuperate Atletico’s fame; Bojan, who with just 18 years old has a record many players wouldn’t be able to obtain throughout their entire careers; Iniesta, who will demonstrate once again that he’s great among the greatest; Mata, who got rid of the reputation of ‘young gun’ and will lead his club’s attack and Navas and Luis Fabiano, who will checkmate the Spanish and European defenses.
The hopes of millions of people are in the hands of a few, those who achieved to get there.
No more tests. The first whistle sounds.

Always Hungry

Posted by DonJulio Aug 29, 2009

Winning the European and Spanish Super Cup stands for more than just two additional titles for F.C. Barcelona. It’s the sound of a Champion of making history and a gauntlet being thrown to their European rivals.
But a champion never tires of victory. So Barca are already letting go of their incredible ‘triple’ just so they can start from scratch… and do it all over again.

Like they never won anything.

That’s the hunger. That’s the difference.

Victories are history. Glory lies ahead.

Fast is never enough

Posted by DonJulio Aug 28, 2009

Theo’s lightning pace terrifies defenders and turns games.

But it’s never enough. To Make the Difference, fast must be fused with an insatiable hunger to be better. To be more than any opposition can handle. Every single week.

Three and easy

Posted by DonJulio Aug 27, 2009

Three minutes. That’s all Arshavin took to Make the Difference last night. Bursting off the bench, he slotted home his first goal of the season to send Arsenal marching into the group stages of Europe’s elite club competition.

A Hero In Training

Posted by Gronamo Aug 26, 2009

The preseason is all about putting in the work, training hard to get ready for the season, but still people were worried when Milan lost eight consecutive games in the process. But their Brazilian duo, who have promised to be the difference makers in offense this season, came through for their team right when it mattered most.

A tumultuous off season in which leaders left has energized and empowered wunderkind Pato, who in the process of taking the offensive reigns up top for Milan has helped revitalize his countryman, Ronaldinho. Both have been killing it this off season and appear set to carry Milan. It didn't take long for the duo's hard work to pay off. Just about 30 minutes.

Ronaldinho played a knifing ball out front of the charging Pato who quickly caught up and coolly slipped the ball into corner of the net; 1-0.

Twenty minutes later, after Milan conceded a goal, the magical duo were back at it again, with Ronaldinho carving up the midfield again before the ball found Pato again in the middle of the box with a point-blank shot on goal. You can't stop that: 2-1.

It looks so easy, but don't mistake the hard earned skill for some Brazilian birthright. The amount of practice Pato puts in is the difference between heroes and the merely talented. The 20-year-old now has 29 goals in 63 games for Milan, and this season is set the make the biggest difference yet. Grabbing two goals in the first game is a nice start.

Make The Difference

Posted by Gronamo Aug 13, 2009

You could stop at enough.
Just another name on the teamsheet.
Happy just to turn up.

Or you could become their worst nightmare.

The one who turns a game in an instant.
Sees the pass no-one else sees.
Turns desperate defence into decisive attack.

Be the one that they worry about days before kick-off.
Who blurs the line between hate and respect.
Who can never be stopped,
Only feared.

Training IS The Difference

Posted by Gronamo Aug 13, 2009

Want proof? Meet Kilian.

Kilian Jacquet is a 15 year old Belgian footballer. A good one. And, according to him, training Nike Football has a lot to do with it. See what a potent mixture of serious commitment and pro level conditioning can achieve. In his own words.

"I did the Nike Football training drills at home, in the garden. When I didn't have the time to do it at home - because of school, or the 4-5 training sessions a week with my club - I did the drills after the training sessions.

There were a few drills that I really liked - "High Gears", "Star Run" and "Rebound." I downloaded the PDFs of the drills and printed all of them and i just took them to the pitch in my pocket.

I can still remember very well the ‘Star Run' effect... I got a transfer to a better club! They said that they were positively surprised by my movement without the ball, and a big reason for that is the ‘Star-Run-drill!!

My volley got a lot better too. I scored a lot of goals last season, because I'm an attacking midfielder and when the ball gets headed back by an opponent, I can take the ball immediately on the volley, because I practiced it so often in the drill.

Last season I played with FC Dender, U19. I started at the U16, and when I started to train, my game went to such a high level, that they "upgraded" me to the U19, first U17, and then U19...so thanks a lot again! And next year -as I mentioned earlier in - I'll play with Zulte-Waregem."

Good luck in the upcoming season, Kilian. But with focus like that, you won't need much luck. The SPARQ pro-conditioning programme starts on the Nike Football Facebook page on August 17th.

Try it. It might just change your game.

Starting the season strong is essential for professional players. Fast out the blocks means an early season advantage. That's why top coaches put such emphasis on pre-season training. But what about you?

When are you planning to hit peak physical condition? The weekend before your first match? Start tuning your body now and get a physical edge that gets you noticed from kick-off to final whistle.

Starting August 17th we're dropping the Nike Football Training SPARQ ‘Get Fit' program on Facebook. Three sessions a week of pro-level conditioning drills created by top international coaches, Jens Bangsbo and Paul Winsper.

Just hit Facebook, watch stars like Andres Iniesta and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar demo the drills - then get out there and sharpen your edge.

Nike Football training helps you build your strength making you harder to shrug off the ball. Helps improve your speed, making you as fast in the last 20 minutes as the first 20. And toughens your core muscles, helping you avoid injury. All the drills are done with the ball at your feet, so you'll improve your touch as you build your fitness.

This is your season. Own it.
