Timmy Preparing for Season

Posted by Gronamo Jul 31, 2009

Last season, Tim Howard set the Everton FC record for shutouts. This season, he'll start the season by shattering a different streak, handing the All-Stars of America their first loss in 6 games of international competition.

Pitting Timmy head to head against the all stars of his old league, the game seemed destined to be one for the ages. And it was. Howard earned Man of the Match honors and single-handedly brought home the W for Everton FC, saving 3 of 5 penalty kicks when the game came to a tie after a full 90.

For Everton, the All-Star game is rounding up the final preparation for the coming English season. As the face of the club, Howard knows he's got the weight on his shoulders, and is looking to replicate last season's success.

Timmy's boss would affirm post-game what everyone who watches soccer in America already knows - that Howard is the best keeper in America. But Moyes took it further, saying "if he keeps going the way he his, it might not just be America".

We know that too, Moyes. Good luck to Tim in his upcoming season!

Clean Sweep

Posted by Gronamo Jul 23, 2009

It might not have been one of the blowout victories we've become used to as WNT fans, but there wasn't much to complain about as the ladies brought home a 1-0 victory in Charleston, S.C. Wednesday night.

Well, maybe the heat. Even though the kickoff was at 8PM, the players couldn't escape the muggy 80 degree weather under the lights. And after a frustrating first half of no goals on a handful of solid tries, the weather seemed to reflect the mounting stress.

So Coach Sundhage turned to the youth of the team to light a fresh spark on the attack. And it paid off. The game winner finally came in the 89^th^ minute and the WNT would hold on to clinch the second straight 1-0 victory against our neighbors to the north.

But let's not forget our secret, if relatively silent, weapon. We can always count on Hope Solo to be her usual self, as she made two point blank stops late in the game to save the clean sheet and ensure the sweep of the series.

Now it's back to professional (or collegiate) play for the WNT, as they prepare for the start of their WPS seasons, where they'll hone their skills for the next round of international bouts. And good luck to the Men's team as they face Honduras today at 6PM ET in Chicago (FSC).

Coming to America

Posted by Gronamo Jul 21, 2009

This summer the inaugural World Football Challenge has arrived stateside, giving Americans a chance to watch some of the top international club talents up close. Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, CA saw the first action on Saturday, as reigning Italian champions Inter Milan took on the perennial Mexican powerhouse Club America.

p-15388 and p-15768 were both looking fresh in their newly unveiled Nike kits, but it was Club America that had the initial swagger and support of a home team. They might have been a long away from their home stadium in Mexico, but the constant yellow streamers and screaming Mexican fans were telling signs of the region’s support for the club.

Club America opened the scoring in the 46th minute when Mexican international and veteran Pavel Pardo put a bending corner right onto his teammate’s boot, for a low volley past Inter’s keeper.

But Inter boss Mourinho made it clear he wasn’t giving up easily – friendly or no friendly. Subbing in prized striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the roars of the 31,000 + in attendance, Mourinho threw injury concerns to the wind and pressed the search for an equalizer.

He got what he was looking for in the 60th minute, as Inter finished on a near post header off a precision corner. Club America would eventually win 5-4 in penalties, but the physical play and start studded line-ups showed the fans that no soccer match is to be taken lightly.

Club America sits in first atop the WFC standings with 3 points. Look for more matches to come throughout the week at the All-American venues Rose Bowl and Georgia Dome.

Blastin’ Past Panama

Posted by Gronamo Jul 20, 2009

The MNT might be rockin’ a somewhat less experienced roster, but that hasn’t stopped them from continuing the US roll and advancing to the semis. With most of the veterans and young stars back off to their clubs, the baton has been passed to the up-and-comers to carry on the success of the red, white and blue.

For a while on Saturday, nothing was going right for the MNT. A header goes off the crossbar. We lose our captain to a concussion. After applying the pressure on Panama from the get-go, we go down 1-0 in first half extra time on an unlucky corner.

Our boys would eventually rack up 16 shots to Panama’s three, but it took 90+ minutes for one to find the back of the net. And what a beauty of a blast it was. Momentum on their side, the boys would finish the job in extra time with a PK.

Yep, it’s been another great weekend for US soccer, with both the WNT and MNT showing again how to roll with the punches and come up with a victory. The MNT draws Honduras in the semis of the Cup on Thursday (FSC, July 23rd, 6 PM ET) at Soldier Field in Chicago. Any way you hack it, it’s going to be a heated finish.

Good luck to the MNT with the rest of the Gold Cup.

Hometown Hero Nets 100

Posted by Gronamo Jul 20, 2009

In front of a hometown crowd on Sunday, Abby completed her miraculous comeback from injury with her 100th career goal for the US WNT. A huge congrats goes out to Abby, who joins Mia Hamm and three others in this exclusive club.

Almost exactly a year ago today, Abby suffered a broken leg that kept her out of Beijing and the entire Achieve Your Gold tour. On Sunday, against a dangerous Canadian side, Abby showed us that the injury hasn’t changed her a bit.

Receiving a dangerous through ball in the box on a cutting run, Abby took one touch and put a surgical strike off the far right post and in. The hometown crowd of 9,000 in Rochester went wild for the game winner and Abby’s 100th, not to mention her first goal since coming back. A goal can’t get more special than that.

The US had a number of other chances, pounding the Canadians with 21 shots including a laser that Angela Hucles put off the crossbar from 20 yards in the 8th minute. But in a fitting end, Abby’s was the only one that found the back of the net.

The WNT faces Canada again on Wednesday (July 22nd, FSC, 8 PM ET). Well done Abby on 100! Now bring on 101!

Holdin' Off Haiti

Posted by Gronamo Jul 16, 2009

Staring their first potential loss in recent Gold Cup history in the face, the MNT just couldn’t find a way to put the ball in the back of the net. That was until some late game Heroics, just when Coach Bradley needed them most. Charlie Davies provided the spark the US needed as a super-sub in the second half, which helped secure a 2-2 draw against the Haitians. The tie clinched first place in Group B for our boys, with Haiti qualifying for the quarterfinals, as well.

Congrats to the MNT for first place in group play. And, an even bigger congrats to Sam Cronin and Luis Robles, who both earned their first career caps. Here’s to many more boys!

Now it’s to the knockout stage, where the squad will be looking to finish the job. The US will face off against Panama on Saturday in Philly to determine who makes it to the semis (Fox Soccer Channel, 7:30 p.m. ET).

Shutout Soccer

Posted by Gronamo Jul 10, 2009

Another game, another W. The US MNT posted a second straight shutout Wednesday night, controlling a potent Honduran attack to win 2-0 in our nation’s capitol.

Charlie Davies (on his way to a new French club in Ligue 1) and Benny Feilhaber ignited the offense with some fresh creativity and precision passing to instigate a two-goal second half assault.

The first tally gave a new definition to the term low and hard when Davies received a pass with his back to the goal and touched it on for a charging teammate, who wasted no time with a sizzling blast that easily found its way by the Honduran keeper. The dagger came five minutes later when we finished a strong header into the top shelf.

The MNT has now taken over first place in Group B with a five-goal lead over second place Haiti, and will look to further their lead when they finish group play against the Haitians. One more game till the knockout round of Gold Cup (Saturday, 7 p.m. ET, FSC and Telefutura). Let’s keep the shutout ball rolling.

A Golden Start

Posted by Gronamo Jul 6, 2009

The MNT knows how to start a Gold Cup. For the tenth consecutive time since the Gold Cup began, the MNT opened up group play with a win, handling Grenada 4-0.

Most of the vets coming back from South Africa are having a rest this tourney, but the younger talent that Coach Bradley has chosen to showcase is far from lacking. It only took seven minutes for the US to get on board, as Freddy Adu reminded everyone what he's all about when he received a well-placed low cross from Robbie Rogers and one-timed it into the back of the net with his right foot.

Man of the Match, Robbie would assist the next goal and have one of his own in the 60th as he received a through ball on a slicing run behind the Grenadian back line, slotting it past the keeper to the far post.

The gem of the match, though, came when a long looping ball played up the far wing was one touched out of the air toward Charlie Davies, who controlled it at a dead sprint and finished with his right foot.

The US faces a more talented, more eager Honduran side (still fresh off a loss to the USMNT in qualifying). The game is under the lights at RFK stadium in DC, and you can be sure the tension will be high. See you there (Wednesday, 9 p.m. ET, FSC and Univision).

From Silver to Gold

Posted by Gronamo Jul 2, 2009

The US MNT’s silver medal performance at the Confederations Cup will be a tough act to follow. But then again, there’s no greater excitement than representing the red, white, and blue on our nation’s birthday. On Saturday, the MNT will don the colors once again on Independence Day and look to start the CONCACAF Gold Cup off with some fireworks against Grenada.

It may not be with the same roster that defeated Spain and gave Brazil a run for their money, but it does return a few key veterans that were missing from the Confeds Cup. What’s more, CONCACAF has granted the US 7 extra roster spots, because of their participation in the Confederations Cup.

Every game in the Gold Cup will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel and Univision. The action starts on Saturday as the US takes on Grenada (6 p.m. PT), followed by Honduras on July 8th and Haiti on the 11th.

Hit up NikeStore.com to get kitted out with the latest Don’t Tread on Me boots, and then tune in on the 4th to show your true colors.
