Lindsay Tarpley: 2 Golds by 25

Posted by gabejazzy Jan 28, 2009

Recently, Kelley Ferro of the Nike Women Field Reporter team had the chance to interview Lindsay Tarpley of the Women's National Team. Tarp was at the Chicago Niketown to headline a forum on soccer training with Abby Wambach. Before the forum kicked-off, the Kalamazoo native opened up to Ferro and talked about her life and what’s next on the horizon.

Kelley Ferro: What was the best moment in your soccer career?
Lindsey Tarpley: Standing at the podium and accepting that gold medal. We had lost three key players before the Games, and we still overcame.

KF: So, this past August marked your second gold medal in a row. How did this gold medal feel different than the
first time?
LT: In Athens I was a lot younger. I learned a lot form Mia and Julie, but I was still learning. This year I was more mature and much stronger.

KF: When did your training really pay off and you said to yourself, "That was awesome"?
LT: In 2004 at the Athens Games, I had the first goal. I had really been working on my long-range shots. I was practicing them a lot. And all of a sudden the chance was there and I kicked a 21-yard goal. The training had really paid off!

KF: When you are having a rough day and don't feel like practicing, what gets you up and out there?
LT: My teammates. Knowing that my teammates are out there and practicing—that's what inspires me.

KF: Who was the role model that really inspired you to go all the way in soccer?
LT: Tracy, my U19 coach. She was an influential coach at an important time in my life.

KF: What do you do in your free time? Whenever that is….
LT: Well since I don't get a lot of free time, I like to be with my husband. We go to coffee shops, play basketball and hang out.

KF: If you could be better at one sport – other than soccer – what would it be?
LT: Golf

KF: What's your favorite indulgence?
LT: Junk food. As much of it as I can get! If I had to pick one, it'd be ice cream.

KF: What's your personal motto?
LT: Just to get after it. Dream big.

KF: So what's next?
LT: I just hope to keep doing well. And next up, World Cup.

Future so Bright

Posted by Gronamo Jan 27, 2009

The first game of 2009 was a symbolic one for the MNT. Fielding a young, inexperienced team against a relatively unknown Swedish side, the results were anything but certain.

And not all predictions were pretty – players were predicting a somewhat more raw game than we’re used to seeing in international competition. Gritty and hard-fought for sure, but probably not as fine-tuned as what we get from the regulars.

They couldn’t have been more off. Though they only had 100 caps between them, the US starting XI came out on Saturday playing like they each possessed those 100 individually. Set pieces were on point, shots on target and defensive play solid.

You don’t want to miss these goals, either. Check the MNT blog for the highlights and see what we are talking about.

If the 3-2 victory against Sweden on Saturday was any glimpse into the future of US soccer, there’s no reason for anything but excitement.

Same Goal in New Year

Posted by Gronamo Jan 23, 2009

Some might think there’s not much at stake during the MNT’s first game of the New Year. With most fans looking ahead to the Feb. 11 qualifier against our longtime rivals and neighbors to the south, the Saturday match-up against Sweden is getting slightly overlooked.

Don’t tell that to any of the guys who reported in for the 20-day training camp on Jan. 4 in Carson, California. The roster might not be quite as star-studded as the one coming up against Mexico, but you’ll see just as much fire on the field as ever. After all, these are spots on the 2010 South Africa squad at stake. The boys on Saturday may just as well be playing in a WC qualifier.

And that’s not to say that there will be no stars on the field on Saturday. Remember Charlie Davies? After a breakout season with his European club, Charlie is looking to break into the senior side with just as much force. And playing his club ball in Sweden, he’s no doubt got the inside info on the Swedes. Look for a banner performance from Davies.

It’s up to the boys on Saturday to set the tone for the final round of qualifying and pave the road to South Africa.

Tune in to watch all the action (5:30 p.m, PT, FSC and Galavision).

Love Him Or Hate Him

Posted by gabejazzy Jan 22, 2009

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has listed him among the game's best players. European football clubs chose him as the recipient of the Ballon d'Or. And now, at only 23 years old, with a 42-goal season under his belt that helped make United champions of England and Europe, Cristiano Ronaldo has been crowned the World Player of the Year.

Nominated alongside five other contenders, Cristiano is the first player from the Premier League to be bestowed with this honor.

Whether you love him or you hate him, Cristiano, the best player in the world, is here to stay.

Congratulations.

Determined in Germany

Posted by Gronamo Jan 20, 2009

It’s not just big news in America, it’s big news everywhere. Landon Donovan is back in Europe, and he’s poised to make his mark.

This isn’t the first time the 26-year-old US national team star has ventured overseas to play soccer – Landon has had two previous stints, the first coming at the ripe old age of 16.

But the Landon that has recently arrived in the German Bundesliga is a new one altogether. “I've grown up, especially mentally," said Donovan. "I'm more experienced and mentally stronger, and I know what to expect here.”

Landon is on a quest to ball in Europe. And this time he’s got early evidence of success. Landon scored in an exhibition match when he trapped the ball at the top of the area with a deft touch, then turned and fired into the corner of the net. Believe us, this one deserves a look (The goal is at 1:46). Proving he’s no one trick pony, Donovan backed up his performance with another goal in a Bundesliga friendly.

The loan period from his home club in LA is only ten weeks, but if Landon has anything to say about it (and we’re sure he will), it could be the beginning of a lasting relationship.

New Year's Resolution

Posted by Gronamo Jan 9, 2009

What’s your New Year’s resolution? Train everyday? Finish every goal? Never lose possession? Aim high, work hard and the on-field results will come. At least that’s what we’re learning from three of the most promising young Americans abroad. For Clint Dempsey, Charlie Davies and Freddy Adu, all the effort put into 2008 looks as though it will be paying big dividends in 2009.

Deuce finished the year with a firework display against Chelsea by scoring two goals that earned Fulham a massive away draw. The most mercurial of the Mercurial wearers, Deuce no longer has to worry about playing time or relegation; he’s regularly going the full 90 for a team that is playing with confidence and competing in the thick of the Premiership table. After the two-goal display, Deuce had this to say about his tendency to come up big against the toughest competition:

“You try every game to win and score goals. But any time you play against the best in the world, that doesn’t happen too many times, and you always want to make the most of your career. You want to make the most of your opportunities. I try to make sure that when I have these opportunities and these chances to get things done, I try to take advantage because nothing’s guaranteed. You never know if you’re going to get another chance.”

Who’s keeping pace? Fellow-Vapor aficionado Charlie Davies just finished his season with Hammarby as the Swedish league’s fourth highest scorer, posting 14 goals. Currently Charlie is out of the Scandinavian cold and into the US MNT training camp in Southern California. Look for him to suit up against his Swedish friends onJanuary 24th.

And Freddy? In his first game of 2009 for Monaco he drew the decisive penalty against one of Italy’s finest clubs.

Come game day, any true fan won't be caught dead in anything other than the colors of their favorite club. And, very few game days are bigger than this Sunday's match between bitter rivals Manchester United and Chelsea. So whether you're a Red Devil or a Blues supporter put on your team's top and watch what's sure to be one of the most exciting club matches played this season.

To up the ante even further, we'll be giving a free jersey away to the fan who correctly guesses who will score first and in what minute. You can guess any player from either side (only one guess per person) and only have to be within three minutes of the actual goal-scoring time; however, we will only be able to give out a ManU jersey. So make your way to the m-5721 for a chance to win your free jersey.

Just so we're clear, if you say Rooney in the 83rd minute and he scores anywhere from the 80th to the 86th, you're a winner of a Man Utd jersey. Or if you say Anelka in the 20th minute and he scores anywhere from the 17th to the 23rd, you're a winner of a Man Utd jersey.

All guesses must be in by kick-off.

Good luck.
