With so many of us making New Year's running resolutions I thought I should share of my favorite coaching phrases. My college coach often used the term "the next logical step" with myself and my teammates; obviously the concept makes sense when you're considering how much mileage to run in a build-up, but it could also apply to non-running challenges, such as the decisions facing a college graduate. We heard the term so often it because part of our worldview, and I firmly believe that simple phrase is of the reasons my alma mater's distance program is successful.
I encourage you to infuse the concept of "the next logical step" into your New Year's running resolutions. Was 2009 your best year as a runner or were you plagued by injuries? Did you have very little life stress in 2009, allowing you to run several PRs, or did you fail to run a single PR during the year? Be honest with yourself about where you were this past Thursday as a runner. Go back to your logs and see where your training went well and where you had difficulties, then set your goals as the logical progression from 2009.
New Year's resolutions are made for running goals. Make 2010 a great year and take the next logical step in your journey as a runner.
