Question. If you could only do one workout a week with others, what would that workout be? Intervals on the track? A threshold run? A long fartlek workout?
Any and all of these workouts are easier to do with others, yet for the novice runner the workout that you should go out of your way to run with others is your weekly long run. Why? Not only will the run go by faster when, in the early miles you're chatting with another runner, but you'll likely run the last third of the run faster because you'll have people to run with.
For the advanced runner a track workout or a threshold effort may be the best runs to do with others (assuming you're running the same pace in those workouts as your training partners), but for the novice, the long run is the one workout where you should take the time to seek out a group to run with.
So, for the next long run in your training schedule, get together with some of your best running buddies and enjoy yourself (and potentially run faster).
