Five Freaky Sounds That You Don’t Want in Running Songs

October 31, 2009

The other day I was running and I swore that a bug flew into my ear. It must have squeezed under my headphone somehow and gotten trapped in there. I stopped, plucked the earbud out and plumbed my aural canal with a pinkie. Once I was sure it was gone, I plugged back in and went on my merry way. Sure enough, the buzzing sound started again. This time I turned down my music and the insect noise went away with it. I realized that the song I was listening to had a sound effect that resembled the noise a mosquito makes when it barnstorms your ears. This made me remember all the times I’ve jumped or slammed on the breaks during a run because of a sound effect in a song. In honor of Halloween, I give you my Top 5:

Get the mix

1. Gunshots (Paper Planes, Made You Look)
You don’t have to be in some shady neighborhood to duck and cover when you hear unexpected gunshots. For some reason it’s more ingrained in my head than Stop, Drop and Roll.

2. Dogs Barking (Sure Shot)
“You can’t, you won’t, and you don’t stop!” are the lyrics, but have you ever had a dog come after you during a run?

3. Screams (The Becoming, Love Rollercoaster)
Sometimes I run in a park near my house in the evenings. This time of year it gets dark earlier, giving the area a creepy feeling. When a song comes on with a woman shrieking, I immediately scan my surroundings (old playground, overgrown bushes) and wish I’d brought a can of mace.

4. Sirens (Quiet Dog, Song to the Siren)
“Quiet Dog” is a PowerSong with a siren that catches you completely off guard near the end. The mix has it buried just enough to make you feel like the fuzz is right on your tail.

5. Cars revving/tires screeching/horns (Officer, I Love You, Girls, Girls, Girls)
The bombastic “Officer” actually has sirens and screeching tires, but the song’s so good for running that you just have to get used to it. “Girls, Girls, Girls” has the added bonus of a Harley revving and some horny dude wolf-whistling to make you nervous.

What other sounds in songs have scared you on a run?

In "Shipping up to Boston" by the Dropkick Murphys, there's what sounds like car tires running on asphalt laid under the entire track. It's really disconcerting while running on the street, it feels like there's a car right behind you for the duration of the song.

Paper planes always makes me duck! Also any song with heavy breathing. Like in Girl Talk - Smash Your Head. All the stop and go breathing freaks me out!

Haha. You don't want heavy breathing in a running song... creepy. You should be the only one panting during a workout.

The other thing I forgot to mention in the article were lyrics like "I'd walk 500 miles," or "Slow it down," or "It's time to chill..." Doesn't work.

I ran once to a whole album of Navy Seal
cadences. I was running up a steep trail on this
mountain and their pacing was perfectly timed for
my pace. Towards the end of one track all of a
sudden I hear this fighter jet coming closer. I
ducked and craned my neck hard and fast from
one side to the other looking for this wayward F-
16 come down to strafe this lone runner. I
thought, "Holy crap!" As the sound passed and I
saw no jet I realized it was embedded on the
track. My wife had a good laugh. :)

I'm going to have to try the Navy Seal cadences. Might make a great addition to a running playlist (minus the Stealth Bomber)...

Hahaha the dog barking really got me too. I'm
constantly being chased by dogs in my
neighborhood cause no one uses leashes.

Nothing like a dog bark to make me jump mid
run.

Shake ya Tail Fetha by Nelly and others, I've never run with it but when I am driving the sirens at the beginning freak the crap out of me! I'm sure it would be the same for running.

I hate the songs that have talking in the background, like some Jason Mraz songs. It makes me feel like someone is trying to talk to me and I always look around.

The song that goes "I hate this part right here ... I
hate this part right heeere..." My workout
instructor always has that song at the end, and I'm
like, "okay! Bad timing with the song!!" =)

I hate when people are talking in the beginning of
a song! It just kills the mood of an upbeat
beginning! :(
