Jam On It

Back in the day, hip-hop was less complicated and more fun. Battles were playful and rhymes were raw, falling perfectly in sync with rudimentary drum loops. Most of the tracks were made with the idea that people would be dancing to them, either on flattened cardboard or in funky clubs. The whole game was about moving bodies, so it seemed logical to put together an old school mix for running — a rap sampler to put more bounce in your pounce.

Paid In Full
This is a classic hip-hop/dance track that was on heavy rotation in the clubs back in 1987. If you didn’t do the running man to this song at some point that year, you weren’t living (or you weren’t born in the ‘70s).

Jam On It
“Go crazy, go crazy, don’t let your body be lazy!” A 1984 breakdancing staple that could be heard on the boomboxes of lockin’ and poppin’ b-boys from LA to NYC. The classic chipmunk vocals were a signature of this group.

Roxanne's Revenge (Re-recorded)
’84 was the year Roxanne Wars began, with a talented 14-year-old female emcee creating this old school masterpiece based on one freestyle take. Our only female rapper on this run keeps things gritty while never losing her sense of humor.

Rock Box
An early crossover cut, Rock Box had a hair-metal guitar lick that fueled the rhymes, making it an instant hit in 1984. Some of the lyrics will have you scratching your head…

The Message
Arguably one of the most recognizable old school rap songs, it’s impossible not to get into the groove of the synths and the power of the lyrical volleying.

Just a Friend
The last cut on our old school tour is the newest of the batch: It came out exactly 20 years ago! The lyrics are pure comedy and the rhyming style is pure maple syrup.
