Wake Up Call
22 September 2011 / 02:27 PM
If training and competing in races have taught me one thing, its that I'm capable of achieving pretty much anything, as long as I'm willing to put in the time and energy. I also learned that to succeed, I have to be willing to take a few spills along the way. With my triathlon around the corner and my training getting intense, it was good to be reminded of this with a nice little wake up call.
This lesson translated quite smoothly into my newest athletic endeavor--learning to wakeboard on Lake Tahoe. I've been in San Francisco for over a year now, but this was my first trip to Tahoe, and I loved everything about it--the clear-blue lake, the fresh air, and the hot, sunny weather that I rarely see in San Francisco.
I spend most of the long weekend lying on a towel in my hand, but after a few days, I was craving some physical activity. I knew I wasn't going to make much progress in my triathlon training (running at altitude in 90 degree heat while my friends lounged at the lake was NOT happening,) so when a friend suggested I go wakeboarding with her, I jumped at the chance.
For my first few attempts, I flipped, flopped, and face-planted in the ocean, but I would not let myself give up. With a little time, a little coaching, and a lot of patience, I finally was able to stand up on the wakeboard. First for only a few seconds, then a few minutes, then finally for some never ending rides across the lake with the snow-capped mountains in the background.
Wakeboarding couldn't be more different than running, but I found out that to succeed, I needed to go into both activities with the same attitude. Sometimes when I'm running, I push my limits and run one more mile than I had planned just to prove to myself that I can. Similarly, I refused to get out of the water until I was able to stand comfortable on the wakeboard, and with a little determination, I achieved exactly that.
What's the last thing you pushed yourself to accomplish?
