Because I Want To

16 August 2011 / 05:48 PM

I wasn’t sure what I was going to write about this week, probably because recently, running has become more of a chore than a privilege. Between work deadlines, my other sports teams, and my intense triathlon training schedule, I’ve had very little free time to go outside for a run, let alone enjoy it while I’m out there. Over the past few weeks, running has been something I’ve been forcing myself to “fit in” to my busy schedule, and I’ve been concentrating more on finishing quickly than enjoying the scenery and the workout.

But tonight was different. I skipped heading to the bar with my team after our kickball game to get in another run before dark. As my team headed in one direction and I headed in another, I once again thought to myself, “I’ll just squeeze in a quick few miles and then go back and join my friends.” But as I started running, I realized that when I rush through the miles, I miss out on the part of running that brings me the most peace. I love running in the streets of San Francisco, and when I’m just trying to finish, I forget to look around at how beautiful the city is.

I snapped the picture above while I was running, and that was just one of the few times I stopped to admire the gorgeous views along the water. It’s summer time, the days are long, the weather is warm, and I’m happy to get back to enjoying my runs, not rushing through them so that I can get to the next activity. Between work, my social life and training, it feels great to get back to running not because I have to, but because I want to.

Do you ever go through slumps in your training? What do you do to bounce back?

I feel like I'm in slump now actually, I am training
for a marathon too!....So today, I tied on my Nike
Trail Shoes and hit the open trails at my favorite
park.....I came across some dogs, horses, frogs,
chipmunks (by the way- Chip and Dale both say
HI!), and well NATURE!....It was peaceful and a
great way to get my long run in!!.....

I'm coming out of a slump now hopefully usually I need a change of scenery. I go to a new park or an area I haven't ran in a while.

Today was my birthday run....it got me to a run
that love- a trail run with my dogs!....Came across
a fox and all.....it's the love of nature that brings
me back into the sport....I can really lose myself in
the trails, while strengthening my legs and feet,
and really getting into my run! My dogs also like
to hit the water at during this trail run.....it was my
dogs, nature, and myself- oh yeah, and my
Nikeplus GPS Sportswatch!

Jeff you are going to love the race. My wife only started running in April and ran her first 5k in July. It too was for charity, and the atmosphere at an event like that is uplifting and electric. Have fun!

I only started running again in mid July, and it still feels like a chore for me (hopefully not for long.) Luckily my wife's running schedule occasionally overlaps with mine and we run together, it really helps to break through slumps (especially 90 degree mornings in LA.)

It feels like I go through these slumps on a regular basis. I am a beginning runner but stull yet, finding time to run and not be in a hurry is hard to do. Nike once said "JUST DO IT"

I am a new runner in SF and feel like my slump is due to this town not being great for logging long mileage. Between hitting crowds and major hills, my running zen is always getting interfered with. I feel like I am darting more than running. Where are good areas in you've found to just break out and go?
"I realized that when I rush through the miles, I miss out on the part of running that brings me the most peace." ~ great line.

RunRabbit- Welcome to SF! I try to stay along the water because I know I wont run into stoplights or busy streets. Golden Gate Park out to Ocean Beach or The Embarcadero to Crissy Field to the Golden Gate Bridge (if I'm feeling ambitious) are some of my favorites!
