Pre-race buzz in New York included the possibility that an American might win the men's race. The significance? The last time an individual in red, white and blue had broken the tape in Central Park was 1982.
Meb Keflezighi, 34, made sure to end this 27 year drought with a decisive victory in 2 hours 9 minutes 15 seconds—41 seconds ahead of second place.
A native of Eritrea, Keflezighi came to the U.S. from his war-torn country when he was just 12 and didn't begin running into late in high school. After a successful college career, Keflezighi began running professionally. In 1998, he became a U.S. citizen, and in 2004 at the Games in Athens, he took silver in the marathon, the first American man to medal since 1976.
Keflezighi's win wasn't the only U.S. triumph. Six Americans finished in the top 10 for the first time since 1979.
Congrats to Meb and the other Americans! Way to do the stars and stripes proud.
