Bill Bowerman inspired countless individuals to lace up their Nikes and start pounding the pavement. To honor Bowerman, Nike+ users were recently challenged to run their speediest 6.2 miles in the 'Your Best Bowerman 10K.' The competition was fierce with over 720 participants, but only one of the top runners could win. So, who took the title? Keep reading.
Meet Chris Parkhurst, a 31 year-old from Weatherford, Oklahoma. A husband and father of three kids, Parkhurst clocked a speedy 35:08 10K! A former high school sprinter and jumper, Parkhurst has only been running a year and a half, but manages to run at least 3 to 4 days per week...twice a day! "I usually run at 4:30am," he said, "and again after work in the heat of the day."
Chris has also been a Nike+ user for a year and a half. He told us, "Running with music keeps me from getting bored on a long run. And the fact that Nike+ keeps a tally of my runs and shows a comparison to other runners is also very motivating. The challenges are also a great tool for motivation."
Parkhurst is currently training for the Oklahoma City Memorial Half Marathon and when he needs a boost, he relies on his PowerSong, "Frontline."
Chris said he couldn't be the runner he is now without his support system. "My wife and three kids have been very supportive in my new found addiction. THANK YOU, ANDREA, KAYLEE, MASON, & CASIDEE! And thank you Nike+!"
Congrats Chris! And keep running hard.
