8-31-08. The Day the World Stopped to Run
I did not participate in the first Nike+ Human Race. I didn’t know about the global event that celebrates runners and their sport. I didn’t know that while I was watching the Phillies take on Chicago, runners in both cities were running as one in the world’s biggest race. I didn’t know that as I walked to work, anyone running past me was running with millions of others. I didn’t own a pair of running shoes. I didn’t belong to the Nike+ community. I had never belonged to a running group. I had never run more than 3 miles, more than a few times a month, or ever anxiously awaited the time of day in which I could get away from it all to just run. The idea of running a half or a full marathon had never even crossed my mind. What a difference a year makes.

10-24-09. The Day the World Stopped to Run. Again.
Not only did I participate in this year’s Nike+ Human Race, I was an ambassador for it! I held an event at a local City Sports location, and local runners of all abilities attended. It was a great time- we ran our 10K through the city, along the Schulykill River, to our Run Club-famed “Human Race Tree,” and back. It was brisk and rainy- my favorite running weather! Becoming an ambassador allowed me to meet this great group of people who I will continue to be friends and run with for many Human Races to come! I cannot thank Nike enough for this. Of course, I didn’t just run with this great group of Philadelphians on Race Day. I ran with my amazing fellow ambassadors: Drew, Erin, Heidi, Justin, Ken, Petey, Sarah, Shannon, and Toto. I also ran with the incredible and passionate members of Team Up To Speed: I ran with my Mom who was walking a 10K in the rain at my aunt’s home in Moosic, PA. I ran with the individuals involved in Students Run Philly Style who used their 10K to train for other events. I ran with teammates who were involved in the Nike-sponsored events in various states. I ran with the students and coaches at St. Andrew’s Anglican College in Australia. I ran with teammates running their own 10Ks in all 50 states and in various countries around the world.

??-??-10. The Day the World Will, Once Again, Stop to Run.
I cannot imagine what the next year holds for me. In less than one year, I have become a runner. I have successfully completed my first half marathon: the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco, California. I plan on running a few more, and hope to complete my first full marathon within the next two years. I have made countless new friends in my fellow ambassadors, runners in Philadelphia, and runners across the globe that I have met through the Nike+ community. I plan on using my fanpage to stay in touch with the members of Up To Speed long after the 2009 Nike+ Human Race is a distant memory. Check it out to view a video from Philadelphia’s Nike+ Human Race event, read runner profiles of team members who submitted their Human Race 10Ks, and to connect to runners around the globe who got Up To Speed on 10-24-2009.
