The Big Apple does EVERYTHING big, and the 2009 New York City Nike+ Human Race 10K was no exception. Over 3,400 individuals descended upon Brooklyn's Prospect Park for The Day The World Runs by completing the 10K.
Although the race was preceded by a night of rain and early morning sprinkles, spirits were far from dampened as PowerSongs rocked runners at energy points from Start to Finish. Recent college grad Tom Papain placed first for the men in 34:37, while New York running star Jessica Schultz took the women's title in 39:11.
As the skies began to clear, racers were welcomed to the ultimate Nike+ Hub with a live concert by indie pop duo (and fellow Brooklyn-ites as well as Nike+ users!) Matt & Kim. Other Hub activities included:
-Nike+ Services: NIKE experts gave runners one-on-one sessions on how to get the most from their runs by training with Nike+ using Apple technology that's already in their pocket. Runners were also able to have their gait analyzed and trial the Nike+ SportBand as well as the latest footwear innovation, the LunarGlide+.
-Human Race Community Center: Here, runners met the world's largest Nike+ interactive Community Table. With a span of over 8 feet and featuring touch screen computer technology, the Community Table was the hit of the post-race experience.
-Runners were able to engage in live chat with NYC DJ Jay Wex while he spun on-stage and even vote for their favorite PowerSong for him to play.
-Runners could also view Race Day photos, email them to friends and family on the spot, as well as post their favorite photos to Facebook and Twitter.
-Participants could learn more about Nike+ technology via video, seeing instant results from the Prospect Park race on giant plasma screens
-Individuals could view photo and video slideshows of Nike+ Human Race footage from cities around the globe-connecting the world to New York City
-Runners were also able to scan their Nike+ Human Race 10k Passport one final time for their chance to win $10K for running 10K
Above all, the Human Race Community Center united runners together for The Day The World Ran on 10.24.2009.
Other post-race highlights included a massage tent where runners were treated to neck and shoulder massages and a Runners' Lounge with a Nike+ TV art installation featuring photo and video from races around the world as well as the Prospect Park race. Our charity partner—Team In Training—was also present to support the NYC running community.
All in all, no one will forget The Day The World Ran in New York City!
