We’re almost there- can you feel it??!

October 21, 2009

With the Nike+ Human Race just a few days away, I can’t help but look back and see how far I have come during my training. When I began my journey to October 24th, I hadn’t yet run a 10K. I knew I had quite a bit of work ahead of me, but I was ready and more than willing to take on the challenge. While visiting Nike’s world headquarters, I was asked what my goal was for this race. My response? “I just want to finish!”

Since then, I have achieved more than I could have ever imagined. Not only have I run a 10K, I have registered to run like a girl signing up for my first half marathon at the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco, California on October 18th. Before committing to running the event, I decided to go on a “test run” to ensure I was actually able to do this. Could I, the girl who just last year couldn’t think of running more than 3 miles, actually finish a half marathon?! I enlisted the help of my boyfriend who agreed to bike alongside me for the duration of the run.

The run started out exactly as I had imagined: it was exhilarating. The thought of running over 13 miles intrigued me, and I knew that I would not let myself stop moving until my Nike+ Sportband read 13.1 miles. When I reached 5 miles, I started to wonder what 8 would feel like. How would I keep pushing myself when I reached 10 miles (my previous farthest distance)? Could I really add another 3 to the farthest I had ever run before? Luckily, my boyfriend noticed the confusion on my face and told me I was doing a great job. That was all I needed to push myself to continue- I was really going to do this! I reached mile 6. Then 7. And then 8. The miles kept coming and going, and I just kept on running. Nothing was going to stop me.

The moment I noticed that I was approaching mile 12, I couldn’t wipe the smile off of my face. I was still running, and was about to finish! Every half mile I would mention how much closer I was to finishing- it really motivated me to hear it aloud even if it did get a bit repetitive!
Finally, the finish was in sight and I ran as hard as I could until I was well past the 13.1 mile marker. I had done it!

The Nike+ Human Race is all about doing your best, and what you deem as being up to speed. It’s about pushing yourself to achieve something just for yourself whatever that may be. For me, it’s all about achieving something that I had never thought I would be able to do and then some. Whether you’re walking, jogging, or running, I hope you will join me and show the world what you’re made of on October 24th. What is your goal for the race? Tell me your story!
