Music makes everything better

October 21, 2009

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about listening to music while on training runs but more specifically while you participate in races. Many large scale races prohibit the use of iPods and will disqualify any runners caught using them as well as confiscate their iPods; though they are nice enough to mail them back to you. The debate has valid points from both sides; yes we want to insure the safety of the runners and want them to experience the full marathon atmosphere. This debate has also popularized the Rock ‘N Roll marathons where there is live music at every other mile, so no real need for your personal iPod. Sure that helps and provides more of an entertainment aspect to the race but it’s not the as being able to control what you are listening to. Especially when you need that PowerSong to play or replay. I am the type of runner who relies on the PowerSong to get me through a tough run, or the boredom of a long run, or to just to tune out other people. Over the years, I have participated in races with and without my iPod and I will say that my more successful races have been with the help of my little old Nano. Music can be a great motivational tool, stress reliever and of course boredom eliminator. I don’t think I will ever stop running without my iPod, I guess I will just have to pick my races more carefully to avoid any confiscations or disqualifications.
I polled a few of the member’s of Team Runner’s High about their PowerSongs, here you go:
