Congratulations from Gatorade!

Gatorade congratulates you on a job well done! As you recover from the Nike Women's Marathon and look to your next race, be sure to continue using Gatorade Recover 03 to help promote muscle recovery after your runs and workouts. Research shows that carbohydrates, along with 10-20g of protein, within 30-60 minutes after exercise can help promote muscle recovery until an athlete's next meal.

Thanks for visiting us at the Expotique. Please accept our sincere apologies that some runners did not receive their mid-race tracking calls, due to technical difficulties caused by the inclement weather on the course on race day.
Ladies First

I have to admit, heading to Cali to hang out with 20,000 women who all love to run sounded pretty good to me from the start. Toss in a couple of Nike's brightest young track stars, a marathon legend, and a killer course, and you had enough to make this RunReporter's head spin.

2010 marked the seventh annual Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco. I was a first-timer, and the incredible energy around this event made my first trip to the City by the Bay one I will never forget.

In the days leading up to the race, Nike set up shop in Union Square in the heart of downtown San Francisco. The Expotique was unlike anything I had ever seen: ladies gearing up for both the full marathon and the half were treated to free smoothies, foot massages, and PowerSongs to get them ready for race day.

Aside from meeting tons of incredible women, I also had the chance to meet and talk with U.S. track elites Nick Symmonds and Shannon Rowbury. Nick and Shannon are both mid-distance pros who represented the U.S. team in Beijing, and both are coming off huge years on the track. They helped prep the runners all weekend with advice and tips, and even joined me for a couple laps around Union Square to show off the new Nike+ GPS app for the iPhone. Luckily, they went easy on me.

I teamed up with the Nike Field Reporter, Gevrina Seferaj, for all the weekend's festivities. Gevrina is interviewing inspiring athletes and blogging about her experiences for Nike Women all year long. We served as honorary emcees for a special college dinner, where Nike and Hurley celebrated all the California college girls that were tackling the course. Gevrina was an athlete at UCLA, so she was super excited to give some love to all the Bruins running.

Race day was absolutely crazy. This might have been the only time in my life I was excited to hear my alarm go off at 4:30 AM. The start line was already buzzing when we arrived, and it's safe to say that nobody living above Union Square was getting much sleep. Droves of women, some running the distance for the first time, descended upon the square to get loose for their big run, and when 7 o'clock hit the party was on. Seeing the excitement on the faces of thousands amazing women, all running for a great cause, made it hard to stop smiling.

I got to catch all the runners again at the 11.5 mile mark, where Nick and Shannon joined me for some mid-race motivational cheers. I suspect that not too many women can say they were cheered on by two Olympic athletes during a race. Despite some blustery winds and rain, the racers were in great spirits, giving us waves, big smiles, and urging on their friends. The race finished right along the Pacific, and the view made for a picturesque end to an incredible run through the hills of San Francisco. Finishers who braved the elements were not given your run-of-the-mill medals, since this is the Nike Women's Marathon after all! So naturally, they eschewed mundane hardware in favor of custom race day Tiffany & Co. necklaces handed to them by Bay Area firefighters in tuxedos.

Despite all the fanfare, the star of the show was still the inspiration for the race, Joan Benoit-Samuelson. The legendary marathoner was everywhere in the days leading up to the race, talking about what drives and inspires her. Joanie just set another marathon record in Chicago last week and jumped in the U.S. 10k championships the following day! But that didn't stop the ageless wonder from joining in on the fun on Sunday; she ran with her daughter Abby, and the mother-daughter duo took the challenging course in stride. Joan is the complete embodiment of Nike's "There is no finish line" mantra, and in the last few weeks she has single-handedly altered my concept of "peak years."

Her spirit is truly at the heart of the event, which has now helped raise over $105 million for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. There were only a handful of men who hopped in the race, but I was pretty jealous of the few who did. Tiffany necklaces and chocolate aid stops aside, there is no race quite like this one anywhere in the world!

Race Day On-Course Support

Running a marathon or a half marathon can take its toll on your body, so we're going to help you the entire way with fully supported aid stations. Read on for info, and be sure to check out the course map here.

To keep you hydrated, we've stocked all aid stations along the course with Safeway Refreshe water and Gatorade Endurance Formula. Need something more substantial? Look for LUNA® Bars and/or CLIF BLOKS products at miles 8.7, 18.5, 19.8 and 24.

Mile 15.2
Mile 17
Mile 18.5*
Mile 19.8*
Mile 22
Mile 24*
Mile 25

All of the above will have Safeway Refreshe water and Gatorade Endurance Formula

*LUNA® Bars and/or CLIF BLOKS products

Yes, there's even more. Grab an orange slice at mile 8.2 at the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Mile, and get that blood sugar up at the runner-favorite Ghirardelli Chocolate Mile, located at mile 12 for half marathoners and mile 22 for full marathoners.
Race Day On-Course Entertainment

We know the mind games runners play on long runs, so we've lined up over 65 course entertainment locations at this year's Nike Women's Marathon to keep you motivated during every mile of your race. Check out the course map here and read on for a peek at some of the highlights.

The Oakland Interfaith Choir will be first up, at mile 1.5. Decked out in robes and rocking fresh Nikes, these singers will wow you with their soulful sounds. Now that's starting your race with inspiration and hope!

You can't miss the Parkour acrobats at mile 2.2 as they defy gravity with their incredible ground rolls and precision jumping. We've got some of the world's best Traceurs and Freerunners running (and jumping, and rolling) right next to you.

We know you like to move, so check out the Rock Force Dance Crew as they rock out at mile 5.5.

Further down the course, the Blue Devils drum line will kick off the Safeway Express Lane at mile 10.5 for half a mile of energy and cheering, ending with DJ Zita, who'll keep you grooving to the beat.

Even with all these on-course entertainers, we haven't forgotten about your family and friends. We've set up Cheer Stations along the course - sixteen to be exact - for your loved ones to shout your name and keep you motivated.

If your supporters want a real treat, send them to the Safeway Marina (mile 4), POMx (mile 4.5), Kaiser Permanente (mile 8) JetBlue (mile 14) or Power Balance (mile 17) cheer stations where they can snack and drink, compliments of these race partners.

There's so much going on, we don't want to spoil all the surprises. Just be ready to run!

Power Balance Pace Leader Tips

Worried you'll go out too fast or too slow? Need someone experienced who you can trust to help you press on when you're ready to slow down? You've already put in the weeks of hard training. We're here to ensure that you hit your goal time! To make sure you'll have a killer race at this year's Nike Women's Marathon, we've created pace groups based on goal finish times. With fourteen different pace groups available, there's no doubt you'll find a pace group that's perfect for you.

Pace groups will be available for finish times of: 3:40, 3:45, 3:50, 4:00, 4:05, 4:10, 4:15, 4:20, 4:30, 4:45, 5:00, 5:15, 5:30 and 6:00.

After you determine the pace group that's right for you, check out some fun facts about our pace crew:

_All Pacers have run at least 3 marathons - one has run 115
_One pacer has qualified for the Olympic Trials
_One pacer won a marathon, including beating the guys!
_Several pacers are Ironman finishers
_One Pacer raised $35,000 this year for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

You're not required to join a pace group, however the camaraderie of a group could help you get through the tough times and keep you on track to hit your goal. To learn more about the Power Balance pace groups, stop by the Power Balance booth at the Expotique to discuss your pace plan. To learn more about our Pace Leaders, check out their tips for running in their group:

3:40 GOAL FINISH TIME (8:24/Mile)
Pacer Jen
Be confident in your training and try to relax during those early miles. Soak in the cheering fans. Introduce yourself to someone else in our group. Have fun!

3:45 GOAL FINISH TIME (8:35/Mile)
Pacer Meg
I do not walk through water stops. Make sure to bring GU or some type of nourishment to aid you throughout the marathon. I take GU at mile 13 and 19, but most people require more. Practice eating GU or whatever you plan to eat on marathon day during your training runs, so you will know how your body will react. Do not over train. If you have run 16-18 miles, you will more than likely be able to do a marathon. Running too many high mileage training runs tends to overwork your body and break it down prior to the marathon.

3:50 GOAL FINISH TIME (8:47/Mile)
Pacer Lauren
I like to talk to each person in my group - find out where you are from, how long you've been running, how your training went, what your goals are. I love it when we have a small little beehive running together and all socializing. But if you are more apt to just tuck in the back and not say a word, that's fine too. I'll try to encourage you with a smile.

3:55 GOAL FINISH TIME (8:58/Mile)
Pacer Carolyn
Don't underestimate 26.2... PREPARE, both physically and mentally.

4:00 GOAL FINISH TIME (9:10/Mile)
Pacer Emily
Say hi and please feel free to carry my sign. It's fun.

4:05 GOAL FINISH TIME (9:22/Mile)
Pacer Theresa
Remember that it's all about going against your natural urges. Hold yourself back at the beginning when you're feeling good, and push yourself to keep the pace as you begin to get tired toward the end.

4:10 GOAL FINISH TIME (9:33/Mile)
Pacer Amy
Relax. Let the pace-groups focus on your goal time. All your energy should be focused on a great and rewarding experience. We'll have fun along the way and encourage you when you need it. Remember, the difference between a runner and a jogger is an entry blank, so stick with us and we'll cross the finish line together!

4:15 GOAL FINISH TIME (9:44/Mile)
Pacer Lisa
I run with the joy God gives me. I think we are given the choice every morning as to which attitude we are going to carry with us through the day. I choose happiness and joy, I love it when I am surrounded by a group of runners who share that same opinion. So join me, bring jokes that make an 8 year-old laugh, smile, and we'll have a great day out there!

4:20 GOAL FINISH TIME (9:55/Mile)
Pacer Deb
I pace for the gratification of helping someone reach their goal.

4:30 GOAL FINISH TIME (10:18/Mile)
Pacer Queen Kathryn
Pace per mile is generally consistent, but I'm an effort-based pacer. Uphills may be slower and downhills faster so that perceived effort is consistent.

4:45 GOAL FINISH TIME (10:52/Mile)
Pacer Jennifer
Come with some funny jokes, some good stories, and song suggestions.

5:00 GOAL FINISH TIME (11:27/Mile)
Pacer Leslie
Goals for the event is a good way to stay focused on the job at hand. My job is to keep you on an even pace and remind you to fuel and hydrate - your job is to trust in your training, run, and have fun.

5:15 GOAL FINISH TIME (12:01/Mile)
Pacer Vickie
You'll have your own personal cheerleader who will do everything she can to get you across the finish line in your goal time, hopefully with a smile on your face and lots of wonderful memories to hold onto.

5:30 GOAL FINISH TIME (12:36/Mile)
Pacer Sharon
If it's your first marathon, be modest in your finish time goals.

6:30 GOAL FINISH TIME (14:00/Mile)
Pacer Jim
We have fun as a group and the energy of the group will help sustain you through the race. Ask me about my "Six Secret Tips Guaranteed To Improve Your Marathon Performance."

Pacer Jim is the Course Closing Pacer and will line up at the rear of the starting zone. When he crosses the finish line at 1:30 PM, the race will officially be over. Even though the course may remain open after Pacer Jim passes the line, if you hope to cross the finish line before 1:30 -- and thus to become an official race finisher -- you must stay ahead of Pacer Jim.
Coat Donation

We all know how it goes... It's chilly at the starting line. Then twenty minutes later, you're sweating up a storm, and now you've got your long sleeve shirt to carry with you for another 24 miles. Fear not, Nike Women's Marathon Coat Donation to the rescue! You can bundle up for the start of the race and then be free to shed those hoodies and fleeces at Mile 2. We've arranged with the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) that ALL clothing you choose to leave at Mile 2 will be donated to this non-profit organization whose mission is to break the cycle of childhood poverty. HPP empowers poor and homeless San Francisco families, particularly mothers motivated by pregnancy and parenthood, to transform their lives. So, while you're doing what you love on the course, your generosity will benefit many families off the course. It warms our hearts to keep everyone toasty, except our runners after Mile 2!

To learn more about the Homeless Prenatal Program, go to homelessprenatal.org.
Course Pacing

All your months of training are finally paying off as you start to think about your finish at this year's Nike Women's Marathon. Beyond the Tiffany & Co. Finisher's Necklace, the Nike Dri-FIT Finisher's t-shirt, and all the stretching, massages, and entertainment, nothing compares to the achievement you will have just completed! And we'll be there to celebrate you.

This year, runners will have 6.5 hours to complete the Nike Women's Marathon.* To help you keep on pace, check out our Pace Points chart. The chart shows you what time you'll need to be where in order to be an official race finisher.

Click here to download a PDF of the Pace Points chart, to keep you on pace at this year's race.

Click here if you want to learn more about the Power Balance pace groups on race day.

*Official finish pace time is 14 minutes per mile and the finish line will close at 1:30pm. If runners do not keep this pace and fall behind the 14 minutes per mile, depending on their location, they will either be picked up and transported to the finish line (mile 8) or they will be asked to move to the sidewalk.
Summer Training for the Nike Women's Marathon

With all the miles you've logged so far, there's no doubt you know EXACTLY why you run! And with just over two months to go until the Nike Women's Marathon, our focus is on what you love - training volume! Our long runs are getting longer and our total running per week continues to climb, so with the added stress on our bodies, it's important to stay alert to remain injury-free. That means giving our bodies some time to rest and recover. After all, we're running more, but we're not getting more hours in the day to recover! So, let's be smart about training and rest when our bodies tell us to.

As we increase the distance of our runs, it's also important to hydrate! Drink water or a sports drink before, during, and after exercise to avoid dehydration (our favorites are Safeway Refreshe Water and G Series Pro Endurance Formula It can also reduce your body's ability to recover from the run and to rebuild your carbohydrate stores. Staying hydrated: we'll all drink to that!

Our NWM mobile unit is still cruising around to running stores in San Francisco, so join us for one of our training runs. You'll find our training partners, Jason and Blake, at the times and locations below.
