COACHING TIP
Training the Brain: Your Mental Fitness Program
“People are as happy as they make up their minds to be”, once said Abraham Lincoln. And he was right. Emotions don’t just happen to us, we create them. We are in charge of our thoughts and feelings. We direct and control our emotional states and moods in any direction we choose.
When we focus on a negative thought, we only get more of it. When we focus on a positive thought, we get more of that too. Here’s how to practice having positive thoughts to counter negative thoughts that may arise.
1) Practice the emotion of gratitude. Make this your “default setting” or a state of mind that you become very accustomed to. Gratitude is a top strength of happy people.
2) The training program, just like one at the gym, starts with a few repetitions, light weights and then gradually builds up. Begin with feeling the emotion of gratitude starting first thing in the morning. Try this ten times throughout the day. Try this during the toughest parts of your run. Keep each focus brief, about five to ten seconds long. Keep it light. Feel the emotion at a 3 or 4 on a scale of 1 to 10. This is the early training phase or base building of positive thoughts and emotions. Practice this on a daily basis until it becomes instant and on-call.
By race day you will conquer the distance, hills and challenges along the way by using your positively trained thoughts and your properly trained body. Negative thoughts will be set aside and replaced with strong positive ones. Reaching the finish line will be filled with positive emotions and a thrilling sense of accomplishment.

Accessories: Arm Warmers and Hydration Belt
Do you have the right clothing, but still looking for just the right accessories? Check out the Nike Running Armwarmer and the Nike Belted Hydration Pack.

It has the dual adjustable padded belt that’s designed to stay in place and helps prevent rubbing and chafing. The wide mouth, 16oz bottles glide in and out of the pack with ease.
