The new iPod Nano Pedometer is easy to use and works right out of the box. It can also be used while listening to music, the FM Radio or watching videos.

The Pedometer keeps track of your steps by using its built-in accelerometer, making it more accurate than a traditional pedometer. It can even be used to count step activity working out on an elliptical trainer in the gym.

By entering your weight, the Pedometer estimates your calorie burn for the steps you have taken, and also keeps track of your total activity time each day. The Pedometer resets itself automatically each day, but it stores your daily, weekly and monthly step count and calorie data in the Pedometer History.

Turning on the Pedometer for a single activity session

To use the Pedometer for a single activity session, follow these steps from the main menu:

The Pedometer will begin tracking your step count, and activity time. Press the Center button to stop the single activity session. You may start/stop as many activity sessions as you wish, and each one will be stored in Pedometer History, and automatically uploaded to nikeplusactive.com each time your iPod Nano is connected to your Mac or PC.

Once the Pedometer is turned on for a single activity session, you may navigate the iPod screens and features (including music and video) without disrupting the Pedometer session.

Turning the Pedometer on to measure your all-day activity

To use the Pedometer to measure your all-day activity, follow these steps from the main menu:

Once the Always On feature is selected, Pedometer will be displayed in the main menu below Settings and above Shuffle Songs.

In the Always On mode, the Pedometer will continue to track your steps as long as the iPod is powered on. To conserve the battery, the iPod nano screen will go to sleep, but the Pedometer will still be tracking your steps. To wake up the iPod nano screen, simply push the center button or dial the Scroll Wheel.

Once the Pedometer is in the Always On mode, you may navigate the iPod screens and features (including music and video) using the Scroll Wheel without disrupting the Pedometer count.

In the Always On mode, you may reset the Pedometer counter to zero (without losing the all-day step activity count) by pressing the center button. You can return to the all-day step activity count by pressing the center button again, and selecting Pedometer in the menu.

This feature allows you to keep track of a specific step count session within the Always On mode. For example, you may want to keep track of your all-day step count, but also measure the step count of a specific time period or workout within that day, such as a run or hike. This reset feature “marks” that specific session in the Pedometer History (similar to a lap counter on a stop watch), but does not impact your total step count for the day in the Always On mode.

You're also able to compare your daily progress against the entire Nike+ Active's community. Since your daily progress bars are designed to be proportionate to the daily community average, it's easy to see how much better (or worse!) you are doing than the rest of the Nike+ Active community each day.
