Manchester United had a fight on their hands. They’d lost their last two games and were 2-1 down to Aston Villa. Hopes of retaining the league were fading.

Cristiano Ronaldo brought the sides level with 10 minutes to go. The comeback was on. But deep into stoppage time, Man Utd could not find the winner.

The ball fell to 17-year old Federico Macheda. With deft skill, he turned his marker and curled a shot into the corner.

Man Utd had all three points, a renewed grip on their title and a bright new star. Sir Alex himself described the wonder strike as “the defining moment of our season.”
