Young Gunner Insider Day 1 (Part 2) - 12 July 2011

3.30pm – 4.00pm: The Ride With Wilshere and Walcott.

After it ended, it was time to head back to the hotel and get ready for the training session scheduled in the evening at Bukit Jalil Stadium. This time, I got to interview two of Arsenal’s most promising young prospects – Jack Wilshere & Theo Walcott.

They were SO friendly, especially Theo where he was constantly cracking up some pretty wicked jokes. Wilshere behaved really maturely for his young age (which is a good thing) and handled all the questions asked pretty well.

7.00pm – 9.00pm: Watching The Gunners Train.

Once we reached the hotel, we rushed for a quick dinner before we left for the training session at Bukit Jalil. We arrived at Bukit Jalil Stadium in the evening and it was certainly awesome that I got to follow the players through the tunnel and out on to the pitch and stayed beside the players’ bench. I stayed at the pitch side and took some great photos! It was mind-blowing watching them play live here in the stadium, but I would still want to fulfill my dream to fly to London and watch them play in Emirates Stadium.

True Inside Access

I would say it was really a money-can’t-buy experience as I managed to see all the Arsenal players up-close; not to forget Arsene Wenger, Ivan Gazidis, Arsenal’s backroom staff whom I usually see their names on Football Manager game but now I got to know how they look like in real-life! I am really grateful for the experience I had during the first day with the Arsenal team. I am really anxious to see how the Malaysia XI vs Arsenal match would turn out; hoping that both sides would give a good match for the fans’ satisfaction.

Rafal Boguszewski, Poland: A winger with a fierce dedication to training and some slick signature moves, Rafal's skills and perseverance got him Noticed.

Jason Choi, Australia: Balance, acceleration, clinical finishing; Jason has all the attributes of a lethal striker. His powerful eye for goal and all round ability got him Noticed.

Andrzel Sobieszcyk, Poland: Every team needs a safe pair of hands and Andrzej's athleticism, concentration and commitment to improving his skills impressed us.

Lukas Rysanek, Czech Republic: A versatile player, Lukas’ hammer of a right foot and unwavering belief in his game got him Noticed. “I don’t succumb to pain. I clench my teeth and keep going,” he explained, “I fight until the end.”

Barcelona and Inter completed the first round at the Giuseppe Meazza. The Italians are ahead but the blue and reds haven’t had the last say yet. They’ve demonstrated time and time again that a champion never gives up. Now is the time to push themselves.

90 minutes separate one of them from the grand finals. Can Inter hold on to the lead with the help of Sneijder, Maicon and Stankovic? Or will Barcelona triumph again with Zlatan, Pedro and Alves’s bullet train speed?

Barca’s players are already sharpening their claws. If there is one thing the team has shown on innumerable occasions, it’s that in 90 minutes, a whole chapter of football history can be written.

Many clubs were rumoured to have been chasing the signature of Fernando Torres. But in the summer of 2007, the Madrid-born striker signed for the red half of Merseyside for a club record fee.

When he took to the field for his home debut against Essien’s Blues, all eyes on the Kop were on him.

After 15 minutes, Fernando raced onto a through ball, muscled his way past the defender and, with pinpoint accuracy, stroked the ball past one of the league’s best keepers

Before the Italian league begins, there is a face-off between the winners of the league and the cup – a curtain-raiser, a statement of intent.

In 2006, Luis Figo, a recent signing for Inter Milan, made his point loud and clear.

With the game locked at 3-3 and heading toward penalties, Figo stepped up and whipped a 30-yard free kick into the left corner.

The keeper was beaten. The cup was Inter’s. Figo’s season was off and running.

Perhaps the finest exponent of Arsene Wenger’s nurturing approach to the beautiful game, Cesc returned to inspire Arsenal to a hard-fought victory that put the Gunners on the verge of the Premier League summit.

After scoring the game’s opener, and masterminding the second, the influential Spaniard struck his 10th league goal of an already impressive season.

A convincing win on Wednesday night will see Arsenal top the table; a befitting throne for the Premier League’s new king.

Malaysia storms into semis with a dramatic finish

Malaysia pulled off one of the most dramatic come-from-behind victories in the history of the SEA Games by eliminating the Thais 2-1 in the final Group A match. The mighty Thais, who have never failed to qualify for the semis for the past 36 years only needed a draw to sail through and for 90 minutes, it looked like everything was going right for them.

The Thais were well on their way to the playoff stage when Arthit Sunthorphit put them in front with a stunning free-kick in the 53rd minute. Malaysia equalized in the 80th minute through Nasriq Baharom but the Thais still had their foot in the semis because a draw would be more than enough.

Just as all hope was lost, Ahmad Fakri Saarani did the incredible, scoring deep into stoppage time to shatter the Thais’ hearts. Picking up a pass from Norsharul Idlan Talaha, Fakri blasted the shot from close range to ignite massive celebrations back home in Malaysia.

Thai coach Steve Darby, being a true sportsman, credited the Malaysians for going beyond the ordinary. For fighting for every ball even when it seems out of reach. For making the play that makes the difference between winning and losing. He loudly proclaimed, “Malaysia Boleh”

Weather conditions: Very cold and windy. Conditions ranged between cloudy, snowing and sunny. Temperature range 0-1C without wind chill. Well below freezing with wind chill. 0-20 mph winds throughout.
Pitch conditions: Good, short grass.
Players and staff: Full first team, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher, Wes Brown, Edwin Van der Sar, Ben Foster, Rafael da Silva, Tomasz Kuszczak.

Tester’s notes:

Freezing cold. And more snow. Balls topped off to 12.5psi.

Team session: 15-mins shots on goal from 20 yards. 8 vs. 2 one-touch keep-ball drill. Fast, one-touch session.

Shooting session: Players hammer the ball, Rooney hits hardest – like a sledgehammer: “Feels nice to strike. Especially when you strike it true.” More finishing drills. Shooting from 3 different spots. Players love shooting with it. All-around accuracy improvements.
