One game. One player. And now the door is open. Just stepping on the field meant something.

Last night Clint Dempsey became the first American to play in a European cup final.

"I know if I am the first American," Dempsey told the UK's Daily Mail. "I won't be the last."

Athletico Madrid took the inaugural European trophy from a late winner in the 116th minute, but Dempsey finished another strong year in Europe and now brings that confidence back home and into national team camp on May 17th when the team begins building toward South Africa where more chances to write the future beckon.

Even after more than 100 years of soccer there is still a new future to write.

On Thursday Fulham returns to European competition, deeper in a continental tournament than every before.

Clint Dempsey's last strike in Europe was a chip to the far post that put the cottagers into the quarterfinals over Juventus. Now recovered from an injury, his creative touch is back for the start of the semi finals in Hamburg.

Every game is a new one, but this is a game Fulham has never seen.

Every player loves a new pair of boots. America’s top athletes have proved that with goal-scoring performances while debuting their newest weapons this season.

Dempsey's Day

It was one of Fulham's greatest nights in European Football. Clint Dempsey was the hero, and Fulham fans had West London rocking.

The term "super sub" is thrown around the soccer world, but Clint Dempsey made it matter coming off the bench for Fulham against Juventus today.

With the clock winding down, with the teams tied on aggregate, in his first game with the brand new Mercurial Vapor Superfly II, the USMNT star turned and chipped a perfect ball from the top right corner of the penalty area into the far post upper90 and put Fulham through to quarterfinals of their European competition.

There is no better example of a Super Sub. Today was Dempsey's day.

That's now eight goals this year for Dempsey. How high can he go - another year as Fulham's leading scorer?

But no longer considered inexperienced upstarts, Landon Donovan's side have proved they can hold their own, finishing second in the Confederations Cup – expect the unexpected.

Brazil stakes its claim

A second half display of poise and relentless attack showed exactly why
you should never write off the world's most notorious cup winning side.

Two first half goals by Dempsey and Donovan showed a US team intent on
damaging the Brazilian's hopes early on. Tim Howard kept the US hearts intact,
until just after half-time when Luis Fabiano turned on the flair and netted
two, putting the game level and his name on the Golden boot.

A passionate display by Donovan, Davies, Dempsey, Oneywu and Howard wasn't
enough to keep the Brazilian onslaught at bay, with the third and final goal
finished when it mattered most.

With twelve months to go, Brazil have staked their claim on South African soil.
