The battle begins

Minutes after the draw for South Africa was announced, the world’s football media was quick to conclude that the Socceroos were facing an uphill battle.

Opening match against Germany – three time tournament champion, three time runners up. Serbia – top of their qualifying group. Ghana – a team of stars from various European leagues. No lightweights then.

But in typical Australian fashion, captain Lucas Neill wasn’t ready to retreat in to a corner just yet, stating “Why not make the first upset of the tournament Australia taking, not just one, but three points against Germany?"

Three points against Germany will make the difference.

The draw for South Africa is on the 4th December.

With qualification now secured after a 28 year absence from the world's largest football tournament, our friends across the ditch in New Zealand can now turn their attention to who their opponents might be in 2010.

It will come as no surprise to many as to who they'd most like to make the difference against.

10 men make the difference

Winning was critical for the Socceroos, playing a tough Oman opposition in front of an unforgiving away crowd.

Early blows in the form of a red card and a goal by Oman meant there were two options; give in or step up.

Australia played the only way they know how - tough and determined, and step up they did.

With a man and a goal down the Socceroos pulled together to respond with 75 minutes of herculean effort. No surrender.

In the end it was Luke Wilkshire and Brett Emerton who scored the crucial goals to make the difference.

One point away

Last night the Socceroos had an emphatic 2-0 win over Uzbekistan in Sydney, putting them one point away from qualification for South Africa 2010.

Four years ago it was a different story. Qualification went down to the wire. No one will have forgotten that night in Sydney when qualifying was decided on penalties. Fast forward to last night and after the win the Socceroos need one more point to qualify with three games in hand.

A draw in any of those games will be good enough. But can you see our squad sitting on their hands and playing for a draw? Not likely…

Any footballer will tell you that making the first eleven to play for your country is the highest honour in the game.

After taking to the pitch for his 69th appearance in the green and gold, Brett Emerton still wants to make the most of this honour.

Off the back of scoring two goals in Australia’s last qualifier in Doha, he stepped up again in Brisbane last night to add another two to his total, taking his total goals scored for Australia to sixteen.

Scoring a goal in your team’s national colours is as good as it gets. Scoring four in two games is Next Level.

After defeating Qatar 3-1 the Socceroos are through to the next round of Qualifying for South Africa 2010. But looking down the score sheet you’d be forgiven for doing a doubletake. Emerton with 2 against his name is not what you’d expect to see. Switching from right back to right midfield and scoring twice is Next Level.
