Lightness Makes Greatness

Lightness makes greatness, and with the new Nike national team kits re-writing the rules for elite apparel, players will be even better prepared to write history in South Africa.

The new jerseys cool the body 7 percent more than the previous incarnations; it's 13 percent lighter and stretches 10 percent more to create one of the most permeable DriFit fabric that's cut to fit better than ever before.

"It's not about light weight," Design Director for Football Thom Walker says. "It's about the right weight."

What weight remains comes from the 8 plastic bottles used to create each of the 100 percent recycled polyester jerseys. Laser-perforated mesh on the sides and a full-mesh back drop some weight and ensure cooling where the body needs it most. Bonded, instead of stitched, seams ensure maximum athlete comfort.

From the unique, perforated numbers and lettering to the Inner Pride graphic on the inside of each federation crest, not a single design element was overlooked, creating a custom and considered design for each nation. The new kits ensure athletes and fans alike will be able to get every ounce out of their own performance.

Explore all the new national team kits on nikefootball.com from March 3rd.
Inside the innovation: Day 2 – National Team Kits

After the excitement of the first day of the Write History launch, day two needed to pull out all the stops.

From the exclusive national team kit catwalk to the recycled technology behind the uniform design, the second day strongly continued to deliver innovation.

Comfort and lightness were at the heart of the new national team kit blueprint, with Dri-fit reducing the accumulation of sweat, and the shirts’ meshed side panels dispersing body heat.

Appearances from a host of international footballers, including Alexandre Pato, Clint Dempsey, Nani, and Ryan Nelsen, gave attendees a close up, personal view of some of the shirts that will be worn in South Africa.

Will one of those shirts be worn by the winning captain?

Practice makes perfect

When the Socceroos first took to the field in Germany in 2006, one of the surprise inclusions was Luke Wilkshire. He may have been a promising young footballer playing in England, but was hardly a household name.

Four years on and with South Africa looming, he plays a key role for the Socceroos in central midfield. His toughness in defence mixed with pinpoint accuracy going forward makes for a deadly combination.

Hear Luke’s thoughts on what is takes to Master Accuracy and how it can make the difference.
Introducing 10 years of Deadly Accuracy

In 2000, The T-90 was launched. Its aim was to make the players who wore it, the deadliest on the planet.

Over the next 10 years, relentless product innovations changed the game. Off-set lacing for a truer strike, increased cushioning for players running further than ever, a shot-shield to give the strike more bite.

Every update of the boot helped players produce ever-greater strikes And some truly great players have graced the T-90. So we’re going to celebrate some of the players and their finest strikes.

Check back next week for the first instalment.
How do you make Cesc, Iniesta and Mascherano even better?

Give them a boot specifically developed for their game.

So this week, we gave the players who pull the strings in midfield, the ultimate control boot. One built to spark counter attacks, play defence-splitting passes, to dominate the game – the CTR360.

Look out.
Black, brooding and with a V for victory slashed across its chest, Man U’s new strip has been engineered to inspire the away win – before a ball’s even been kicked.

Like the home strip, this kit is rooted in a century of history, with elements taken from the very first Old Trafford season of 1909/1910. It’s been designed to intimidate, with a blue chevron; black shirt, shorts and socks; and ‘The Theatre of Dreams Since 1910’ woven onto the inside label. It’s dark, menacing, and readies the team for another electrifying season.
T-90 Ascente Testing - Juventus

Date: 09.02.09
Location: Vinovo, Italy
Weather conditions: Sunny, light wind. Perfect training conditions.
Pitch conditions: Wet. A few heavy patches of water and some sandy sections.
Players and staff: Christian Molinaro, Claudio Marchisio, Amauri Carvalho de Oliveira. Some of the team were away on international duty.

Tester’s notes:
Sunny day, soft breeze. Ideal. Long and short-range passing led by Coach Schincaglia. Team session: keep ball lasted for over an hour. More than 100 touches on the ball. Schincaglia pleased with every one of them: “It’s great for tight control and one-two passes.” Shooting session: finishing drills for the strikers. Ball flight is clean. Barbetti Luigi: “I like this. It’s great.” Goals look good with this ball. And so do the players. “Fans will love it. They’ll see great goals.” Molinaro’s right.

More than a club: The new Barcelona jersey

The shirt label says it all: “More than a club”. FC Barcelona’s new 2009/10 home and away kits have been designed to inspire the kind of football the club’s famous for – spirited, passionate and oozing Catalan pride.

The home kit flies the club’s famous colours – the Atlantic blue with deep red vertical stripes now bordered with a thin yellow stripe. The Catalan flag, the Senyera, is stamped onto the back of the shirt collar, while the socks have ‘Barça’ emblazoned on the calf.

The away kit is designed to reflect the gleaming Mediterranean. The shirt is bright mango, the shorts that familiar blue. Made to order for a team that fields some of the world’s most dazzling players.
Battle lines drawn

Arsenal has always had London at its heart. Now the club’s new 2009/10 3rd kit, with its sharp pinstripe design, enables the players to take a piece of the capital with them, wherever they do battle.

The shirt’s white with the pinstripe redcurrant – the same hue as the club’s strip in its first and last seasons at the former Highbury ground. The polo collar is inspired by the kit of the all-conquering 1930s side. And the label on the seam has the Arsenal cannons standing guard over the club’s motto: ‘Victoria Concordia Crescit,’ - ‘Victory Comes from Harmony’.

Sharp, stylish, crafted by experts: football just the way it should be.
Tradition Reborn

The 1980s. Juventus won 11 trophies in a single decade. Back then the shirt was black and white, but with narrower stripes than in recent years. This season the look returns, giving the club a striking appearance and a reignited passion for success.

On the inside of the home shirt, the label proudly shows off the Italian flag with a single lone ‘J’ woven into the centre. The away kit is just as simple: silver shirt, black and white sash, black shorts and Juventus stamped onto the calf of the white socks.

It’s all here in black-and-white. The Old Lady stands rejuvenated, ready for the launch of another glorious season.
Speed scores goals. Two steps ahead of your opponent can mean the difference between scoring a goal and losing the ball. The Mercurial Vapor has been delivering on that promise for years. That's why the Vapor is the boot of choice for CR7.

And now Ronaldo has a new secret weapon, the Mercurial Blade. The new pinnacle in shin guard technology, the Blade features an ultra-thin carbon fibre composite shell designed to withstand the demands of the game at an elite level. Nike's lightest ever elite guard. Two steps ahead will now be four steps ahead. Defenders beware.
Get faster to the ball. Move faster with the ball.

The Superfly features a dual density stud system that shaves every last ounce of unnecessary material from your boot, so you can shave seconds off your running time. If you’re cutting sideways, or ploughing straight towards goal, the Superfly traction pattern gives you the support to stay standing while your opponents fall around you.
Flywire: the Superfly’s secret weapon

You wouldn’t buy a sports car and pack the boot with lead. The same goes for a football boot. Modelled on the most economical of support structures, the Mercurial Superfly’s new Flywire design system is as efficient at load-bearing as the suspension bridge that inspired it.

With the lightest, strongest ever material between your feet and the ball, the featherweight Superfly combines killer touch with match-winning speed. Great news for forwards, terrible news for defenders.
The Superfly: a hat-trick of innovations

Look out defenders, Mercurial Superfly is coming. And it’s fast. The fastest boot in football is built on three key innovations.

Flywire technology provides the greatest stability from the lightest materials. Ultra-efficient dual density studs, give total traction at defence-beating speeds. And a revolutionary 7-layer carbon-fibre outsole mixes speed, strength and flexibility to help you get behind any back four.

The developers behind the Superfly overhauled every inch of its design to give Nike players the weapon they need to strike the killer blow come match day. And because our products always start with the player, it was input from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, Alexandre Pato and Theo Walcott that made the Superfly the boot it is today.
