When the Socceroos first took to the field in Germany in 2006, one of the surprise inclusions was Luke Wilkshire. He may have been a promising young footballer playing in England, but was hardly a household name.

Four years on and with South Africa looming, he plays a key role for the Socceroos in central midfield. His toughness in defence mixed with pinpoint accuracy going forward makes for a deadly combination.

Many clubs were rumoured to have been chasing the signature of Fernando Torres. But in the summer of 2007, the Madrid-born striker signed for the red half of Merseyside for a club record fee.

When he took to the field for his home debut against Essien’s Blues, all eyes on the Kop were on him.

After 15 minutes, Fernando raced onto a through ball, muscled his way past the defender and, with pinpoint accuracy, stroked the ball past one of the league’s best keepers.

Before the Italian league begins, there is a face-off between the winners of the league and the cup – a curtain-raiser, a statement of intent.

In 2006, Luis Figo, a recent signing for Inter Milan, made his point loud and clear.

With the game locked at 3-3 and heading toward penalties, Figo stepped up and whipped a 30-yard free kick into the left corner.

The keeper was beaten. The cup was Inter’s. Figo’s season was off and running.

As Inter strengthened its grip on the Scudetto, it was all or nothing for Juventus and the Rossoneri as the two teams went head-to-head.

Tight and tactical, this was a battle for the right to challenge Inter’s supremacy at the top. A defensive mistake left the Old Lady a goal down, the game and their title aspirations hanging in the balance.

Cue Ronaldinho and a sprinkle of Samba magic, two goals from the Brazilian magician ending the contest. The unmistakable smile says it all.
