Tyreke Evans: Rookie of the Year
29 April 2010
There's the "Tyreke is a grown man" side of things. A direct Kobe quote, to be exact.
There's the numbers side of things. Some added up to Evans leading his team; others led all rookies across the league.
The highlights: 20.1 points, 5.8 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game.
There's the historical precedent side of things.
That 20-5-5 split? Well, the former No. 4 overall pick finished his inaugural NBA season as just the fourth rookie in NBA history to post it. Call that the symmetry side of things.
There's the "he-did-WHAT?!" side of things.
Spoiling the Christmas season early for Chicago, outscoring them all by himself in the 4th quarter of a ridiculous 35-point come-from-behind victory. Posting his first career triple-double in March - on a promo night for his Rookie of the Year campaign, nonetheless.
A pair of Western Conference Rookie of the Month awards. Game-winning buckets.
And perhaps most impressively: never hitting the "rookie wall."
There's the sportsmanship side of things.
After 26 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals earned him MVP of the Rookie vs. Sophomore game during NBA All-Star Weekend, he publicly rewarded the Spurs' DeJuan Blair - whose 23 rebounds helped the rooks vanquish the sophs - by sharing the award.
There's another trophy that Tyreke Evans will share with no one:
2010 NBA Rookie of the Year.
